    Lets first off start with pretty much everyone is moving to SSD storage drives. They are pretty much indestructible. But when an 8 Terabyte external hard drive made by one of the best drive companies is selling it for the price of a 1 -2 Terabyte SSD, I think thats a pretty good deal for a drive that won’t be tossed and banged around. It should be pretty safe, for a while. Seems like a screaming deal to me.

    New one installed by Geek Squad. No major issues initially but was not shown how it actually worked compared to my old one replaced. After two weeks starting making load scratchy noise and was very hot. Then it died. Best Buy replaced and installed a different auto back up, without asking how it was set up previously. Fine except again was not told any details. Backs up daily and filling up the drive. No way to erase on my end. Can not access my backed up pictures, but can my digital documents and videos? A mess. Geek Squad coming.

    So far so good. If you ever had a drive fail on you, it cost thousands to get it repaired. And what they don’t tell you is that you need to replace harddrives every 3-5 years. HDD drives mechanical arm can fail and just scratch your disk up. I have the previous WD book and it’s still going good. Bought this one to back up the other.

    I purchased this external HD to backup photos. Easy to setup and is fast enough as a backup drive. I did not use the included backup software. It is third party and is overly complicated for my needs. I purchased an aftermarket solution online which simply backs up my pictures on demand.

    Replaced a failed Seagate 3TB drive, losing all data. Have a much older 500GB WD drive which is still working well, so decided to buy a new WD. Very satisfied so far – zero issues.

    This hard drive was exceptional during a 7 month deployment. I was able to store over 1,866 movies, a vast collection of television series, and multiple documents with plenty of room to spare. It was very easy to use, endured the wear and tear of daily handling, and did not malfunction at any point. It was my saving grace at sea! One of my Sailors ended up purchasing one as well after using mine.

    I LOVED my WD MyCloud, but I don’t know why they stopped supporting the older WD MyBook’s. Those were great too. The only reason why I purchased this was because after something like 8 years, they stopped supporting the older cloud drives.

    I was looking for a external harddrive to use to back up my main PC. I looked at several different drives and zeroed in on the WD- My Book 8TB external HD.

    It comes with a built in software to do the back up. I used the enclosed Windows file backup program and that work well with the external HD.

    I recommend it to anyone who needs to back up your data.

    “AUX Hard Drives – USB 3.0”
    1) While transferring massive amounts of data with many directories and files, unit will simply dropout (or go to sleep) and is difficult to wakeup.
    2) After being “up” and available to system for a time (even days) it will dropout of availability, and cannot (sometimes) be made available even if the power is removed and reattached.
    3) Don’t like no power on light to indicate if operational.

    Working great for Time Machine backup. Had to reformat for Mac, which is easy with Disk Utility. It is a bit loud (you can hear the disk “thumping” like older hard drives) but it’s not overwhelming. For the price, it’s a lot of storage. Also bought a couple weeks later another WD 8TB drive called Easy Storage which is a bit less and not as noisy.

    The internal drive is sata. I pulled it out and put it in my server. The usb board can be used on any sata drive. It’s a proper drive controller. Got it on sale and it works as a drive to store my raw video files and cad files. I got a few of these running in raid and they work nicely in my 1u rackmount server.

    My previous 4TB MyBook lasted for years and died just after I spent funds replacing my 10+ year old home computer. In a pinch, I ran to the local Best Buy and purchased another MyBook (8TB) and then set up my CrashPlan/Code 42 account to restore my data. No problem–yahoo for offsite backup.

    The WD site and built-in software was new, unnecessary, and different.

    Regardless, all was set up, no data was lost, and I was fully functional again.

    That was in March 2023.

    This one died in November 2023. It made a funny noise for a few minutes one day, then poof. Nothing would work.

    I’ve now purchased a solid-state option from another manufacturer.

    It’s pretty easy to use but the software is somewhat confusing. I had been using a toaster-type external drive and I like that this is enclosed.

    I have 2 of these drives. Primary use is as a main back up for smaller portable drives that I take on location with me for big weekend photo shoots. They work but are slow and clumsy when attempting to save large amounts of data to them and slow to retrieve images. I am in the process of replacing them with a better, faster and more reliable drive.

    After only a couple of weeks of using this drive, it started clicking consistently. It sounded like the drive was failing. I bought a second drive, and that one lagged and had connection issues. This seems to only happen with the WD 8TB drives. I have used the WD My Book 4TB drives for years with no problems. I returned to those and will stick with those!
