this item is very glitchy and often does not do what it should do. It often loses connection to the audio system and sometimes dos not turn off needing to unplug the unit to power down and reset. very annoying. It is paired with a Sony 65″ OLED TV you would think the system would be carefree but it is way too complicated and the remote control buttons are too small to use easily

ScottF –
Great sound but lacked some punch for bigger speakers. Also this does not have enough pre outs for real amplifiers to be connected. Good for a small area without large speakers.

Great value. This replaced a brand new Onkyo that crapped out after 60 days. Sound for voices is good not great, but that’s the only complaint this far.

You can’t go wrong with a sony receiver. This is my second one only because my other one was accidentally damaged by a family member. The connections and sound is excellent.

Purchased this unit to replace an older Sony receiver. Have only had it up and operating for a couple of days. Setup is very easy and Sony provides an operating manual for the basic operation. Set up for me was longer than usual because of a faulty speaker wire in the attic which took a while to find and fix. The auto calibration phase had indicated that the right front speaker had an issue. Once fixed everything went smoothly. The soundfields are very nice although I have yet to put them to the test by playing a BD movie. There is a help manual available on line which can be downloaded to a computer or cell phone which gives much more information details on its operation.

Fantastic system for the price. We originally had an Atmis soundbar, but we were not impressed with the surround, even with wireless surround speakers. This was only a little more (we had our front speakers from the old setup), with much better sound spatialization. Even better, we can add additional side or top surrounds and it doesn’t block the bottom of the TV like the soundbar did. One con, the connection to the wireless surrounds sometimes gets a little choppy (seems like other Bluetooth devices interfere), but this is easily resolved with recalibration in the system, and the system recognizes when the connection is bad and will suggest recalibration.

This replaced my 5.1 STR-DH590 Sony receiver. The sound quality is much cleaner and fuller than the previous amp with the same speakers. I added the front up firing Atmos height effect speakers too and the surround effect is so much more spatial. The auto calibration process was easy. It although like most I have used set my speakers to large format. This disables the subwoofer. Manually setting them to small and setting the crossover values took care of this error. Would recommend this AVR receiver to anyone!!

Needed a new receiver for a recently deceased one and couldnt be happier! IMO, it interfaces perfectly with my Sony TV and PS5 — and my Apple TV to boot. Great interface and even provides an input for a vinyl player. Top notch mid-tier receiver.

I have been interested and home surround sound systems as early as 1985. Throughout the years, I’ve owned numerous types of home theater receiver’s, including Onkyo, Yamaha, and the latest being Denom. but, until I bought this receiver, I really didn’t understand how clear surroundsound can be, especially the Atmos effect. I’ve been using at most receivers for about seven years, and all this time I felt very underwhelmed. I just thought that was the typical presentation for that technology. When I bought this receiver, I literally felt like I was going from black-and-white to color except from an audio perspective. The sound separation is so clear and sharp. Any Atmos affect in the 3-D imaging of the sound is unbelievable. I’m so glad that I stumbled upon this receiver, which I also feel is a bargain. The set up was very easy, especially the calibration, which, with other brands, requires numerous areas of positioning with the microphone for the calibration. I highly recommend this receiver, and I’m enjoying every second of it. I am actually re-watching all of my atmos movies and he sound completely different to me.

This new model, the STR-AN1000, represents a significant upgrade from my previous Sony AVR STR-DN 1080. At first glance, it may appear similar with only minor enhancements, but in terms of specifications and overall experience, the STR-AN1000 surpasses expectations. While the external appearance remains unchanged, which I personally appreciate, the remote has undergone an update to offer a better grip, thanks to its smaller size – a notable improvement. One key addition is the HDMI 2.1 compatibility with VRR for gaming, a feature I missed in my previous model.
Moreover, the user interface has a fresh and well-organized look. Boasting 6 4K and 8K inputs along with 2 outputs, the device is well-equipped for modern connectivity needs. The setup process was effortless, and the on-screen software proved to be self-explanatory, guiding me seamlessly through the sound setup. I connected my Klipsch Reference 5.1.4 with Dolby Atmos, and the resulting audio was truly exceptional, particularly with the immersive 360 spatial audio experience.
Notably, the inclusion of WiFi, along with the convenient AirPlay and cast functions, adds significant value to the overall functionality of the device.
JohnB –
If you are into special sound effects, it gives you that. For me, when listening to music via DVDS or vynil, it’s pure direct setting does a good job.
DannyfP –
Read and watched quite a lot about this model. I’m glad I made the purchase. It’s my 2nd Sony receiver in 15 years so I have zero to complain about.
LarryM –
A primary plus is its good FM tuner circuit and the existence of an AM tuner! Many tuner-amps only allow FM. Sports fans appreciate AM.
Use of a television as the tuner-amp’s display (much like a computer monitor) is innovative and simple to use. Lastly the tuner-amp’s eARC HDMI circuitry can be used for real 7.2 channel configurations.
My ONLY complaint is being unable to listen to radio, enjoy a music CD, use a phonograph turntable or other audio source when watching television, except the television’s audio. “Smart” electronics are a bore.
Lastly, the price made it a good buy.
RandiM –
Excellent upgrade for my TV. Easy to install, improves sound.
BrentK –
I really like this receiver. It has many adjustments to make it sound just the way you want.

Great reciever with lots of options and easy setup

Bought this to pair with my Sony Bravia x90L. The receiver sounds pretty good when watching movies, I am using a 5.0 setup in my living room. I’d give it 4 stars for movie watching. I didn’t like the user interface, its ok but not very user friendly. Music listening wasn’t that great, i wasn’t using any EQ for movies or music. Movies sound good but in stereo mode the treble was very bright, too bright, and the bass was very flat. This can kind of be fixed by adjusting EQ, but its not convenient to have to adjust the EQ every time i want to switch between Stereo and Surround Sound modes. I know some people like the “Sony” sound, but its not for me. Also the “click” when turning on the amp is kind of loud. Also i couldnt figure out how to stop the amp turning on every time i turn on the TV, i dont need the amp for normal TV watching.
Anyway long story short, i exchanged this for a Denon x1800h. I am much happier now. Movies sound great. Music is awesome in stereo. It doesn’t turn on every time i turn my TV on unless i want it too. And it was virtually the same price.
I thought i would get a Sony AVR to match my Bravia, but i should have known better considering i have a higher model Denon already in my home theater that i am very happy with also.

This Sony STR AN1000 receiver is an excellent choice, especially for those with 8K needs and a requirement for dual 120hz HDMI ports, which is particularly beneficial if you have a TV with limited ports like the Sony Bravia.
I use it with my Sony Bravia OLED, and it integrates seamlessly, allowing me to control my home theater setup directly with the Sony TV remote. After connecting this receiver, I noticed new quick menu options on my Sony TV, such as sound field and options to toggle 360 spatial audio.
For Sony Bravia TV owners, this receiver is the ideal complement. However, its merits extend beyond just pairing with Sony TVs. Its performance and audio quality are outstanding for movies and other video content, regardless of your TV brand.
My setup includes Sony speakers configured for Atmos, front left/right, a subwoofer, and wireless rear speakers. The auto-calibration feature is impressively precise, a testament to Sony’s engineering. The 360 spatial audio, in my experience, even surpasses Dolby Atmos, creating an incredibly immersive sound environment.
However, the receiver falls short when it comes to playing music. Compared to my previous Pioneer receiver, which had the MCACC calibration function, music playback sounds somewhat flat. Despite trying various calibration settings, I can’t seem to activate the subwoofer for music or 2-channel stereo, as it only kicks in for multi-channel modes. The custom preset settings allow adjustments for every speaker except the subwoofer, which is a puzzling omission. I hope a future firmware update might address this.
My speaker setup is a 5.1.2 configuration, including the subwoofer. For now, I find myself using my old Pioneer receiver for playing music from my turntable, while the Sony receiver is relegated to video content. It’s disappointing that Sony didn’t give the same attention to the music playback capabilities as they did to other features.

Great GUI and easy setup features.
Supports all the latest Audio and video formats!

Working great so far! Love this receiver. It was very easy to set up I have had no issues at all!

Perfectly compatible with our Sony TV and Bose 5.2 speaker system. I thought the atomic explosion in Oppenheimer occurred in our house! This receiver was a replacement of an aging Sony receiver.
