Katt –
I bought this lens to pair with my Sony a6500, and after taking it on an all-day excursion to photograph wildlife and birds, I’m in awe of the image quality. The autofocus is almost instantaneous, and especially impressive when shooting birds in flight. This lens is allowing me to take my photography to another level.
Jrack5 –
After only a month of owning this lens. Have not found a situation that this lens could not Handle. But it’s really strongest suit is live action Weatherby sporting events or nature photography. The Lens is worth the price.
x2000 –
I’m very impressed with this lens along with the Sony A6000. The image quality is amazing.
If you’re considering doing wildlife photography, this lens is outstanding
Coley –
The lens is amazing for specific shooting styles. For video, you can get a total of 1260mm of distance using Super35 + Clear Image Zoom. I returned this lens and went with the 70-200mm GM as the copy I received had soft corners and auto-focus issues. I also prefer less range and the better low-light performance of the 70-200mm GM.
Juankillar1 –
This glass is a must in order to capture real time images through a camera. Colors are true and beautiful. Focus is nice, quick, predictable, and reliable.
Sean –
Very sharp lens. Equal to all the hype. I would highly recommend this piece of equipment to all.
Dawn –
Expensive but a fun lens to capture the moon with. Great for wildlife and landscapes.
Alifonso –
This lens it’s tack sharp! Live the fact that I can carry this lens while hiking looking for wildlife. I can hand hold the lens and the images still come sharp. I also use it for landscapes and it’s fantastic. I have no complains about it. I shoot with the a7R III – a7R IV and a9 and it work great with all my cameras.
CGMac –
I have experienced some issues with focus, but so far, it appears to be a great addition to my lens
Kwok –
Very good I like it. It is a very very very good product.
AlexDASurfer –
Sony G Master this lense is one of the best money can buy solid strong never had an issue and amazing photos with this lense it says up load an image but my images are so good I do not want to down size my image to laod the images are too good and would not give the justice to view in the settings the settings requested for this review
SpacesickOak66 –
This lens is super sharp and if you have a crop sensor Sony it really allows you to get close to whatever you are capturing
LoganS –
Fantastic glass! Tracking speed is better than I had expected (and I expected a lot), plenty of reach and yet it’s still manageable shooting handheld!
Bruce –
This lens is a remarkably useful addition to your photographic equipment! And as I’ve found in my experience with the G Master line, the clarity and precision are incredible. A versatile lens that is great for shooting birds and critters from a distance, yet can still get up close and get some impressive results. Relatively light and compact for a lens that has this kind of range, this is a five star all the way in my book!
Timbo –
This lens it razor sharp all across the zoom range. Be aware that the length of the lens increases significantly as you zoom in.
Cdunton –
One of Sony’s best. Versatile and sharp, mates perfectly with both the A7III an A7RIV. Images are clean, contrasty with great color. Much lighter and more compact than the equivalent model I use to own when I was invested in the Canon DSLR system.
Tiburon –
G-Master lens glass is superior, responsive and quick.
Added this unit into my quiver for wildlife and either stand alone or with the 1.4X TC extender, it becomes 540mm of BIF clarity.
I also own the FE 200600G OSS (non GM) and using with the ILCE-7RM4 is a beast of matching. There have been many documented photogs who’ve turned their back on the 200600 but it really takes a lot of practice to get it working.
The upgrade to 100400GM is well worth it and now I have the wildlife subjects covered.
Still putting off the A1 for the time being.
GSmom –
Love it. Crisp shots. A little heavy but expected
Wilson69 –
Lens is very sharp and can’t wait to use it at the air show.
Kwes –
It is a well built lens and serves as a good walk around lens. It is a bit expensive and not as sharp as it’s big brother the 200-600mm which serves as the better choice for birding and wildlife photography.
tlab –
I use this lens with an A7R4 and get excellent results. This the most versatile lens that I have ever used, covering near macro photography, landscape photography, and wildlife photography with ease. It’s my favorite lens of all time, and if anything ever happened to it I would replace it in an instant. Don’t be off of by the weight — it’s worth the effort to carry this fine lens, and I found it easy to get used to.

Got awesome shots from my trip to wind cave national park with this lens.
Amit –
I used this lens with tripod, monopod and under various settings and light conditions with my a7R III, but I was missing the sharp image. If your subject is moving, you have to increase shutter speed and auto ISO will add considerable noise. Stabilizer is not doing a great job.
I returned this lens today.
I disappointed with image quality and I paid 15% for restocking fee.
Vinoveritas1 –
I have not used this lens as of yet…..however with all other Sony GM lenses, it does not disappoint to date.
hewhoshallnotbenamed –
a bit pricey but excellent quality. Good optics and high performance. Make sure to use the focus limiter if you are mostly shooting close or distant subjects. The aF is excellent and fast with recent generation bodies. The lone exception is if you get it stuck hunting from minimum focus distance to something distant
greattelelens –
This is the best mid range telephoto lens I’ve ever owned. Unbelievable clarity when hooked up to my a7r3. Focus is very fast even in low light.
linds –
This lens paired well with the Sony e-mount camera. It is a good lens. It’s pricey, but a good lens.
Unknown –
Love this lens so I am buying another one. I fell in a hole in the
ocean with the first one – damaged beyond repair unfortunately!
John123 –
First of it is really good lens when actually taking pictures, BUT it does have one MAJOR flaw. The zoom expands by gravity when carrying lens and camera. It is extremely annoying and causes issues ALL the time for me. The simpler G 70-200 is much easier to deal with this way. My older Canon lenses do not have this issue either.
Sonymusicphotog –
I had press photo assignment for a concert from the sound boards 40 rows back. The 100-400 performed well.. sharp, clear and fast.
Jason –
This lens is great. It’s short focusing distance along with the long focal almost mimics a macro lens, and 400mm gets you quite a view. Coupled with one of Sony’s high megapixel R series cameras, you are sure to have a winner.
Lolo –
I havent tried any others but I heard Sony is the best in the market and it didnt disappoint. It is only discomfort is, it is heavy but thats expected
Arroz –
I read all the reviews and it turns out it a great lens. Super sharp at 4.5, sharp corner to corner from f8 to f16. Many of the reviews have said it’s a heavy lens, yes but fine on a monopod. Works great with the AR7 IV for animal and bird photography.
Turk –
First telephoto lens for a mirrorless system. Does not disappoint and allows you to get close to the subject from a solid distance. Sharp and versatile especially with the close focus distance. Not the best option for low light but great for wildlife, detailed landscapes, and even portraits. Pricy but I highly recommend this lens if you plan on doing any of the following types of photography. More sample photos can be found at c.devern_photography on Instagram. Also able to add teleconverters for that extra distance.
sonyyyyyy –
Amazing lens. Can do it all. Couldn’t believe how much sharper photos come out.
SteveB –
This is a full-featured lens with all of the options necessary. It has a removable tripod mount. The zoom rate is changeable to prevent inadvertent changes to the zoom.
Hahou –
Great lens just the price is high. The picture quality is great.
SN2200 –
I had just purchased the 200-600, so I was shocked and overly happy at the weight of this lens. Can easily hold without need of tripod, gimbal, beanbag, etc. Features as always with Sony lenses are good.
EddyDaYetti –
Fantastic lens. Extremely sharp. Would recommend over the 600mm
Marie –
I was hesitant on buying this lens. It does a great job zooming in. I like to photograph animals and now I can get great pictures without getting too close.
EstesPark –
Great lens for midrange zoom
Good glass but not for low light situations
JohnG –
Awesome reach and stability. A little heavy if you aren’t used to it.
AndrewS –
Excellent lens, light weight, fast focus.
The lens adjustment ring could be tighter.
Santosh –
Best for wildlife photography. Steadyshot work wonders even in max zoom
JJ56 –
Surprisingly one of the sharpest zooms I’ve ever worked with.
wwwzc –
This is a very useful lens for capturing animals and scenery, which is very good
HowardC –
You get what you pay for
Worth every penny.
Amazing lens, captures the finest details for beautiful pictures
FranciscoA –
Great lens. I ha e tried a few others for bird photography, but this one is the one I liked most. 600mm would of been noce but this will do.
Dwbo –
I like the lens. It’s good for wildlife and moon photography.
SonyAlphaCustomer –
Recently purchased the Sony FE 100-400mm f to video commercials and sports events, as happy with the lens. It provides solid field perception and clarity we need for high level media production
