The optics, build, size and feel are all near perfect. However, as many have noted, the focus breathing when shooting video is egregious. Even if you have an A7IV or other newer Sony with FB compensation, the crop is quite significant (goes from 35mm to about 39mm and that’s without any stabilization crop). It’s a lot of money to spend if you’re not a professional charging money. IMO, the Sony FE 35mm 1.8 is an excellent alternative. I had both and ended up keeping the 1.8 because of its cost/size/quality. It also has virtually no focus breathing so you avoid that crop. It’s significantly smaller/lighter and about half the price but in no way is it half the quality. I’d say it’s at least 90-95% as good as the GM (I realize that’s subjective).

Was looking at various 35mm prime lenses, including Sigma and Canon. Canon seems to have the dreamier Bokeh. After reading the reviews, this lens is supposed to be sharp at 1.4 from center to the edges. It was not wrong. For portrait shots, this is the lens to go for Sony gear! The bokeh is dreamy. You won’t be disappointed. Great for portraits.

Very nice lens, sharp and easy to use, the aperture ring on the lens is a nice touch as well. I love the wide aperture for portraits and can use this for some Astro photography. A 35mm prime is not a must for everyone, especially those who prefer zoom lenses, but if you’re looking for a lens this length with a much wider aperture than you’d find in any zoom lens, this can’t be beat, as long as you can afford it.

Chefs kiss. This is a perfect 35mm prime. I use it as my primary lens as it is extremely versatile. Its extremly sharp, extremely fast, and the bokeh is a cream dream. I would also consider the 24mm 1.4 if youre in the market for a prime of this apature. Both are very versatile focal lengths.
