This lens only works with a lens that had not come out yet from Sony. It was not readily apparent on the website that the it only worked with one lens and that lens was not yet available. I have returned this 2x lens. While I have rated it low and have not recommended it, the reason is only because I have no way of testing the lens. I feel Sony and Best Buy were wrong to sell this lens prior to the release of the only lens it works with. Also, they need to make that more clear on the website that it is only compatible with the one lens.

First off, the title shows this is a 2x teleconverter, while the description states this is a 1.4x teleconverter. This is a 2x converter. Secondly, I’m using the teleconverter with the Sony G Master FE 100-400mm which results in 200-800mm focal length. Camera Body: Sony A7ii
So how much light is lost? My camera shows F9 at 200mm and F11 at 800mm.
I first tried shooting subjects that were very far away to test the limits of the teleconverter. It’s quite a challenge to keep the camera steady and get focused, but it’s not impossible. Don’t try to photograph tiny birds like swallows that are 30 feet or more away. You’d be asking for too much.
It’s much better to find a subject that is well within reach of your actual focal length or just out of reach. That’s where the teleconverter really shines. There’s no huge penalty for shooting wide open at 800mm if your subject is in the right range. You will get amazing closeups and if you’re into macros you will get excellent detail without having to get very close to the subject. If you’re photographing wildlife, this is great since you’ll be able to get closer shots without getting physically closer and potentially disturbing your subject.
I didn’t notice any major loss of quality in images. Some images came out soft but this is more of a focus issue. You will find it difficult to lock in focus at times. Overall my images were beyond acceptable. When loading up photographs for editing I don’t need to do a major amount of post processing in order to make the shots look good. I’m editing just as I would edit any photo without a converter. You won’t be spending a lot of time cleaning up quality loss.
It’s a little pricey, but I’m definitely satisfied. If you have the right expectations you will enjoy using it.

I bought this converter for my Sony Gmaster 70-200 f2.8. I was considering buying the Sony Gmaster 100-400 f4-5.6 but ultimately decided on the 70-200 and then bought the 2x converter. hopefully you realize that the 2x converter causes you to lose 2 stops of light so it turns my f2.8 into a f5.6 when i have it on my lens. if you are outside in sunlight it’s not a problem, but indoors with good lighting it hurts but is manageable. in the end it roughly equivocates me owning the 100-400 but at only 20% the cost. this is a good option if you don’t want to spend the money on both lenses or if you want to turn your 100-400 into a 200-800 but you probably can only use that in bright sunlight. BE AWARE: this only fits these two lenses that i have referred to here! no other lenses work with it!

Fantastic build quality just like the G Master lenses I like that it is so compact that with it on my 70-200 G Master 2.8 it still fits in all my bags with out modifications to the bags

Fore little money you can zoom in if needed just need good sun light need more light shutter speed and fstop also iso goes up but for additional zoom power this is a good buy to get you closer to the action

I was a die hard Nikon user and fan. I switched to Sony and no looking back. I couldn’t get a sharp shot with a Nikon 2x teleconverter on my 500mm Nikkor lens but this Sony TC works wonderful. I can even get it to autofocus for Birds in Flight with my 600mm lens for an equivalent 1200 FOV. Unbelievable how good it is when paired with the A9. Sharp even at f/8.

Well it looked like it would have worked unfortunately it didn’t fit my Sony a6000 like I was hoping it would. Hopefully it works for the next person interested in it! Good luck 🙂

It’s very useful to max out zoom on something …….

I have returned this unit, not because of the quality, but due to the fact I didn’t do thorough homework related to the application of this lens. I purchased this unit, thinking that it was compatible to my existing Sony lenses. However, after receiving it, I quickly discovered the physical incompatibility. Doing more research I realized that there were only 4 or 5 Sony lenses that worked with the 2X. My ignorance cost me nearly $90 because of the Best Buy return policy

I really don’t use this teleconverter as it’s only for specific situations with the loss of two stops and slower auto-focus.
wallyphotography –
does the job, can’t complain, just like any 2X but it is nice and compact.
Sigma6 –
Great product just gives me a tad bit more. Great extender without having to pay for another lens.
MJCiNE –
If you own ANY of the white Sony FE telephoto lenses (like f2.8 70-200mm or the f5.6-6.3 200-600mm) this is a no brainer. 2 stop loss, auto-focus works great. There seems to be a lot of amateur photog’s who buy this thinking it works with ALL Sony lenses. Please do your homework. There’s a short list of telephoto lenses this is designed for. Inexpensive and compact. Doubles your tele-range. RECOMMEND

Perfect addition for our Sony Camera set-up-adds so much.
Gingkogirl –
I purchased this to go with my Sony 200-600 to bring small birds just a bit closer. It works very well. I’m glad that I finally took the plunge!
Ozzy –
I use this on my Sony 200-600mm G Lens & it works well. You do lose 2 stops of light but that is with all TC’s.
Sonyshooter4 –
Sony x2, works well with sony 100-400gm, have gotten good shots of the moon at 800mm though expect some softness with the 2 stops of light loss
Nirosh –
Works well and brings the electronics over between the camera body and the lens. Make sure you look up what lenses it works with. Great addition to camera gear for the right lenses.
Nouna –
Amazing booster to your 70-200 lens! This will make a world of difference in your long range pictures!
Cliff –
I use it my Sony 200-600 for astrophotograpy. Considering stacking another one with an extension tube. This will also give me the ability to use one on both of my cameras.
Just1Randy –

This has enhanced the reach of my 70-200mm Sony lens. Great product
Seid –
Amazing teleconverter from Sony. It was easy to order the item at best buy and receive it on time when it was not available at Sony.
Unknown –
How can you not want this 2x! I mean you get twice the reach! It does not work with all lenses but it’s amazing with the 70-200 and the 200-600
JohnH –
Doesnt fit as many lenses as I had hoped. Only works with my 70mm-200mm. I have 9 lenses and it only fits the one.
Disney180 –
It’s well made and it give you the extra zoom. Works great if you using for sports.
JiayiZ –
Good extension of range with my 70-200 lens, saved money for purchasing 100-400mm lens
Steve –
Great adapter for my 200 to 600 mm. You lose a bit of quality but it’s nice for wildlife.
KatieJ –
This teleconverter worked well for converting my 200mm to 400mm for sports photography. You do sacrifice aperture to do this, but it does the job on a well-lit sports field.
Elrey –
Originally bought the 200-600m lense but it was enormous. Way too big to carry around everyday. Swapped it for 70-200 and bought the teleconverter. Its freakin awesome. I take a lot of sports pics, my kids baseball, nephews football.
JamesJ –
It takes a little trial and error before you can be comfortable with it.
