I have been using Norelco electric shavers for decades and have tried lots of them, from very inexpensive to very pricey. But if you just want a basic Norelco model that provides a comfortable, close shave, this 5400 is hard to beat.
Sure, it lacks a lot of the bells and whistles or the fancy sculpted metal exteriors of the more expensive models but, at its heart, it’s the same shaver — at a bargain price.
Let’s start with the perfectly shaped ergonomic main body, which fits your hand like a glove. The body is just plastic but that works fine. It wraps around a motor that is probably the same on all models — Quiet and powerful enough to easily do the job. So all that leaves is the shaving head, which is one area where there are distinct differences between models.
This one has your basic no-frills shaving head with 45 self sharpening blades. There are no fancy “comfort rings” or automatic micro adjustments to customize the shaver head to your face. But, to be honest, you don’t really need that because this is plenty good enough to get the job done — providing the kind of comfortable shave Norelco is famous for, without much fuss.
The 5400 even has something called SenseIQ which automatically provides more power if you have a heavy beard. That’s a nice extra at this price point.
As with all other Norelco models, the 5400 has a head and blade housings that flex in a lot of different directions to follow the contour of your face. Dubbed the 360 Contour Head, that has been improved over the years and this latest version works great. There’s a built in pop up trimmer too, which is more convenient than the swapable trimmer/shaver heads on some other models.
Cleaning is a breeze since the entire shaver is “showerproof.” Just flip open the head and run it under the faucet. That obviously means you can shave wet or dry.
Cordless power is provided by a built -in lithium ion battery, which runs for several weeks between charges. Charging time is about one hour. A three segment battery guage helps you keep track on the charging status.
The only downside to this model is it does not come with a charger, just a USB A cable. But most folks have extra USB chargers from phones and other devices so that probably is not a big deal.
Norelco electric shavers are generally maintenance free, except for regular cleaning and the need to replace the blades once a year. The good news is the cost of replacements for this model is low compared to high end versions.
The bottom line here is if you are in the market good, reliable, comfortable electric shaver, you can’t wrong with the Norleco 5400

About 20 years ago I switched from a Norelco electric razor to a manual razor. I loved the convenience of electric but not the skin irritation that came with it – I blame my coarse, thick whiskers and dry skin. But now with airport security hassles increasing I sought new ways to shed liquid-based toiletries that require removal from my luggage during screening. So, with decades now passed since my last electric razor I thought I’d try again as a way to eliminate shaving cream.
I love my manual razor so my plan was the new electric would be for travel only – or so I though. As such, I zeroed in on a quality, but basic, model. The Norelco 5400 looked like the “no-nonsense, all business” solution I was looking for with just a blade cover and a charge cable in the box. You can’t get any more “no-frills” than that folks.
My old Norelco razor had three independent “floating” rotary blades just like my new 5400. That’s where the similarities stop. In ergonomics and effectiveness, the 5400 is a modern and resolute razor. It has a sculpted cool look but it’s more than a pretty face, it’s a great shave. The slimer metal and rubber textured handle is grippy and solid in-hand. It’s appreciably more comfortable than my thick plastic slab handle model years ago. It’s also unbelievably light.
The most notable update for me is the angled three rotary blades — they use to lie flat on ancient models of the late 90s. That flatness was a key reason why I had to press down hard for a decent shave which led to irritation. The angled blades on the 5400 adapt to the contours of my face rather than vice versa.
I’ve had the 5400 for three shave days now, and I already feel I’ve used it enough to make a conclusion – thumbs up. When the 5400 arrived I charged it up which didn’t take long at all – maybe a tad under an hour. I then had to play with my new toy and lucky me I had a day-old beard since I knew it was coming. I turned it on and put it to my dry face. Ouch. Memories of 20 years ago came to fore. But I was not ready to give up because, unlike 20 years ago, the 5400 is showerproof. So, I put it down and left it for another day.
The next morning I took it with me in the shower. I let the steam and hot water soften up my beard while I washed my hair. Then the moment of truth, I flipped the switch and started to shave wet. Meh. It was definitely more comfortable than dry, but not enough. I immediately stopped and slathered my face with a watered down a dab of Cremo shaving cream and the new experiment was afoot.
This time the experience was exquisite. I couldn’t even feel the 5400 mowing my now two-day beard. The tri-heads moved around the tough angles of my jaw, under my nose, and the corners of my mouth unhindered, something, honestly I must use due care with my manual or nick arrives and not the jolly one. But… I had to use shaving cream, which is exactly what I was trying to dump on my travels. Time to regroup.
Next day, new beard. This time I rubbed shampoo on half my face and shaving cream on the other half. I started with the shampoo side. Very good, just a hair under my experience the prior day with shaving cream – a tad less glide and a touch more feeling my hairs getting evicted. I excitedly thought “this could work.” After drying off I felt my face and the shampoo side felt as smooth as the shaving cream side. And no skin irritation. Success!
That’s my story, I found my travel razor and can ditch bringing shaving cream. The 5400 really impressed and surprised me. But, I also have to say, while it exudes modernity, the charge cable does not. It’s a complete throwback to past eras and a serious distraction from its otherwise greatness. This may be a quibble, but it does relate to convenience and user experience. The included charge cord is a proprietary shape — I think — on the end that goes into the razor and USB-A on the end that goes to the wall. (USB-A power brick is not included. I guess Phillips assumed everyone has one already.) What a nuisance.
All my portable electronics that I travel with – my phone, tablet, laptop, are USB-C only now. This razor should be too if it wants to be completely modern and enhance user convenience, especially for travel where bringing less is more. USB-A is as yesterday as the opposite end of the included cable. On the other hand, everyone has a USB-C cable in their bag. Hopefully, Norelco will get the message and re-design the power supply to all its razors soon so that both ends are USB-C. The provided cable is a ding for a razor that is otherwise a perfect mid-tier tech product.
Overall, the 5400 checks most of my boxes for a fantastic no-frills mid-level razor. The box might be sparse of accessories, but Norelco did not scrimp on shave experience. I don’t mind having to use it wet, I’m just glad it is showerproof. It has a high-end build quality and feel and delivers a baby smooth shave that beats my loved manual blades – so much so, once I exhaust my cache of them I may never buy another manual cartridge again. The 5400 is that good. What else can you really want from a razor – other than USB-C charging?

This is a standard nice electric razor that is charged with a USB cord and it charges fairly quickly. It would be good for shaving a thick beard quickly. It does not shave a closely as other more expensive foil shavers and in order to get a smooth face, you need to go over the face several times . It therefore would be good for the person that doesn’t want a close shave. (For that rough Cowboy look.) Eventually it does produce a smooth face . But, you may also need to shave twice a day. It is held in the hand nicely and follows the form of the face well. It is ergonomically designed well.
Charging with a USB connector seems silly given that this is usually a bathroom activity and a regular electric plug in would be much better. Having an assortment of colors to choose from would be nice and help with keeping track of different razors when. Overall, it is a nice razor.

I got the Philips Norelco Shaver for my husband who is a long time razor blade user. It’s probably been 30 years since he’s used anything else. He wanted to try an electric shaver, but I was skeptical that he would switch. To my surprise, he loves it. He especially likes the pop out trimmer blade for his mustache and sideburns. He said the first shave wasn’t as close as with a blade, but it was just due to learning how to maneuver the electric shaver.
I did the initial set up for him – which was painless. All I had to do was charge it up. Charging took less than an hour and the shaver should operate about 60 minutes before it needs recharging. My husband will just need to watch for the lights that tell him it’s time to put it on the charger or clean it. The shaver is waterproof and can be used dry or with shaving cream, rinsed under water or even used in the shower. There is a safety feature that prevents it from turning on when it is connected to power.
An interesting feature of this shaver is the “21 day adaptation guarantee”. Norelco says it can take some time for the facial hair to adjust to a new cutting angle or method. So they give the buyer 3 weeks to try the shaver and if not happy, it can be returned for the full purchase price (within 45 days of purchase).
I can’t think of anything negative to say about this shaver. It is simple to use, easy to charge and easy to maintain. It won over an “old school” razor blade user who isn’t easy to please!

I have a Norelco model 5300 that I absolutely love. It holds a good charge for long periods of travel and it works great. This is a newer model (S5880 or 5400) of the 5300 utilizing a USB-A charging cord which is great for travel because it’s smaller and USB jacks are readily available everywhere for charging. It charges in about an hour and is expected to run about 60 minutes per charge.
This Norelco does a great job of shaving; it’s comfortable, and it’s fast. You can use it dry while walking about or use it in the shower. It’s easy to clean by popping the blades up which are hinged to the shaver and simply washing it under the faucet or the shower head while showering. The complete head assembly will pop off the shaver if you need to thoroughly clean the cutting assembly. I really like the built in pop-up trimmer that is always there when you need it. It’s especially nice for travel as you won’t lose it compared to the separate trimmers you must attach. The 3 LED bar graph gives you a good idea just how much charge you have left. These shavers will easily work for 2 weeks or more with daily use before you need to recharge. I like the size and feel of the shaver in my hand. The rubber finish on the back side helps to make the shaver secure in your hand while using it wet or dry.
Yes! I would recommend this to a friend. It’s a great cost effective shaver that works well and is hassle free to use. And it comes with a 45 day money back guarantee from Norelco if you don’t like it!

This shaver gives the best clean shave. You can use this shaver wet or dry. This shaver only comes with the USB charger piece so you need a connector piece or to plug into a USB outlet. To charge this shaver you must give it a couple hours to charge but the wait is worth it. This shaver lasts for 60 minutes without any issue. This shaver seems to work great for anyone who has hard corse beards like my husband.
My husband decided to use this shaver with some prep lotion before using it. It was easy to charge and it keeps a charge for a long while before needing to charge it. He loves how flexible the head of the shaver is and gets those hard to reach areas on his face. Skin close shave that left him feeling as he said, “His skin felt like gold.” He loved the fact that it didnt irritate his sensitive skin and didnt leave him with razor burn. He also even loved the option of using the side burn trimmer for those pesky side burns he has. He absolutely loved the close shave and how silky smooth it left his feeling. It trimmed everywhere he needed it and wanted it without pulling on his much needed thick corse beard. It was a very gentle shaver compared to trying to shave by hand. This was quick and easy. Made shaving easy as a breeze with such a quick set up. He said it fit perfectly in his hand and it wasn’t super bulky which made shaving like a breeze. Easy to use and easy to clean when you are done. Husband says this is the perfect shave that he has been wanting. He looks handsome and that makes me happy.

As someone who has been a long time user of Philips shavers I definitely was not disappointed in their most recent shaver. This shaver retains many positive features from past products, but at the same time implements a few tweaks that provide added convenience.
Firstly, right out of the box you can tell this is a quality product. It does not feel cheaply made as it provides the right amount of heft, but also is not too cumbersome to maneuver around your face while shaving. The new charging cable was nice as it is smaller in nature, but the one downside with this new model is that the power brick is external from the charging cable and as with every tech product today there was not a charging brick included, but being USB-A I`m sure we all have an extra one lying around somewhere. Also, the lack of a carrying case is slightly disappointing, but Philips has seemed to have done away with those for now as my previous model did not provide one as well.
Moving onto the actual performance of the shaver though I was pleasantly surprised with its usability. At first I was a little weary of the more geometric shape as it almost seemed too bulky and the heads of the shaver did not appear to be as effective as previous models where they were closer together. However, the shaver has been great to use as the more geometric shape allows getting to those corners of your face to be much easier, especially around the sideburns. The pop-up trimmer was also helpful in some of these more odd areas of the face. I had just changed the blades in my old Philips razor about a month ago so I did not expect to see much difference, but I was amazed at how large of a difference there was as this razor saved me a few extra minutes on my morning routine as shaving went much quicker. After using it for multiple shaves I have not had any irritation in the slightest either. I do end up charging it about once a week on the weekends so the battery life appears to be right on par as well.
Overall, I really don`t know what else you could ask for in a razor as the battery life is adequate, form factor is comfortable, and the performance is top notch. Philips may not have included a charging brick or carrying case, but at this price point this does not deter me from giving this product five stars and recommending it to those looking for a shaver without breaking the bank.

The Norelco 5400 is a very good basic shaver from Philips. It has many of the features of the more expensive models at a very good price.
It’s a total wet/dry shaver. You can use it in the shower or bathtub, with shaving foam or gel or nothing. You can experiment to see what works best for you.
The pop-up trimmer is right there for your use. The shaver is cleaned by just running warm water over the shaving heads, then press the release button to expose the hair chamber, run water over that and you’re done.
This is the first Norelco shaver I’ve seen that uses a USB cable to charge the battery. The battery fully charged in less than an hour, then you get an hour of total shaving time before it needs to be charged again. The three element display lets you know the state of the battery in the shaver.
Included is a plastic cap to protect the rotary blades when travelling. It also features a ‘travel lock’ which protects the shaver from accidentally turning itself on in your luggage. It features a two-year warranty AND a 45-day money back guarantee. If you’ve used the shaver for that time and our still not happy with the shaver, you can send it back to Philips with your receipt and they’ll refund your money.
Bottom line, it’s a very reasonably priced shaver which matches the more expensive models in many ways. I compared the shave against a much more expensive Norelco and really couldn’t see or feel the difference. With the 45-day guarantee that they offer, it’s hard to see how you could go wrong.

This has been a fantastic experience! The build quality is excellent, waterproof, and good battery life. The shave is precise and efficient.
Going into this review, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I haven’t owned one of these electric trimmers in over a decade. My first and last electric trimmer was a base model machine. Maybe it was something about it during that time but it just wasn’t great. It didn’t trim well and frankly would have thought it was dull as it tend to yank more than cut while new. It sat around for a very long time and eventually went missing. A standard razor blade was certainly a much better experience and finding the clubs that ship you razors never made me look back. Fast forward to January 2023 when this shows up and I’m in awe for it’s craftsmanship. It looks nice, feels solid, and the blades have individual movement. The light up screen is a nice touch, it’s simple yet easy and clear to read. Plus there’s a pop up blade that looked interesting, for reaching those hard to reach areas. I quickly unbox it and run through it’s instructions to learn about it while ignoring charging. It worked for a brief 5 minutes and gave out. I figured it would have enough juice for a quick run the way most other electronics such as phones, Bluetooth speakers, etc. show up. This wasn’t the case and had to put it down for a charge. If I had given up after this first use this would have been a 1-star product review. That’s because after I charged it I proceeded to trim the same way I do with a razor and this shaver was yanking a lot more than cutting. I didn’t realize that this machine requires you to trim if you’ve got anything longer than a few millimeters of beard, guessing the norm for any of these types of machines. After trimming I came back to the Norelco and gave it another whirl. Yep, that was the issue was it went through everything easily. I really like the shaping of the blades as they made it easy to go across the chin easily without cutting off my goatee.
The first run I was a little hesitant to try the trimmer, it’s design looks a little intimidating, like it will cut you. After giving it a shot along the sideburns I quickly realized it wasn’t the case
According to the instructions this is fully waterproof. My testing concluded that it is under a sink, but it makes mention of running it in the shower. An unlikely place I’ll ever be using it as I need the aid of a mirror sitting above a water source, such as a sink. My main concern would be the contacts along the bottom of the trimmer. There isn’t any type of protection there. I assume as long as you refrain from putting it through water and plugging it in to charge immediately after would be fine. The contacts are recessed so unless you flip the trimmer upside-down you may never have that issue, but sometimes to be aware of.
Overall, this is an excellent shaving experience. The build is fantastic and quality of the trim is excellent. You can’t go wrong with this.
This is definitely a 5-star product.

I’ve been using my new razor for a week now. I wanted to give my face time to adjust to the new way of shaving. I first learned to shave with my father’s Norelco. It was a gift from us kids for fathers day. He loved it. It was rechargeable to some fifty years ago with a shav counter that kept rack of how many shaves you go per charge.
This new triple header was easy to charge with the included USB style cord. After all, who needs another brick laying around the house. I have enough and outlets that have built in power charging ports. Yes, I am saving the planet one shave at a time. About one hour of charging produced one hour of shaves. Less to carry in my luggage too.
I find using “William’s ‘Lectra shave pre conditioner” provides a smooth comfortable shave. But this razor will let you shave in the shower or use traditional lather or cream too.
Norelco makes swapping out the round blades easy and inexpensive. The blade head number SH71 is printed on the back of the razor’s body. They swap out as a set providing a new razor feel. Yes, not my first Norelco. Cleaning is as simple as pushing the small button on the head to pop open and expose the blades. I run it under water and set the unit aside to dry before storing the razor back in the drawer. I think you’ll enjoy shaving with the triple header as much as I do.

Philips Norelco (PN) has long been known for good to outstanding shavers of one type or another. This new 5400, in my humble opinion, is one of the best, if not the best, I have ever tried. It’s got all I need for a proper shave in a single device. Having a built-in moustache/sideburns trimmer is a great convenience and a time saver, because there’s no need to stop and attach a trimmer head. This particular asset is not unique to the 5400; however, I think it’s pairing with the outstanding 5400’s overall shaving quality makes it stand out from the others.
For quite some time I have kept an electric razor ( upgrading as time passed, always PN, currently a 6800) for when I want a quick, not necessarily close shave. When I need a really close shave, my face tells me a double edged razor shave is hard to beat. This new 5400 is a game changer!
“Powerful shave, gentle on skin” is a statement printed on the box containing the shaver. That is a statement I cannot argue with. My facial skin is somewhat sensitive, and I tested the 5400 dry, damp, and with shave gel. With my older 6800, I felt a little razor sting with dry, then decreasing for wet or gel. A dry shave with the 5400 was comparatively free of sting. Wet only with water improved the experience. BUT, when I used the 5400 with my usual shaving gel, it blew me away. For the first time ever, I got a smooth shave from an electric razor that is a worthy competitor to my manual shaving razor! The new and improved self-sharpening blades (45 blades with 90,000/minute cutting action), contour of the heads, SenseIQ hair sensing technology, snap-out moustache/sideburns trimmer, and a highly ergonomic design bundle together to make an outstanding shaving experience.
There is no doubt that I would recommend it to family or friends. In fact, I already have someone in mind.
Brandon –
I want to say that it excels at it’s main purpose. The main purpose I believe, would be shaving my skin and making it smooth. What it does not excel at, would be the other features mentioned.
So let me just say that I have been able to cut down the time I am shaving in half or even more. Compared to my previous trimmer it would take a couple dozen passes to clean up my neck beard. This shaver took only a couple passes under my neck and then it felt soft. That could have do with the smart technology it is bragging about having but I do not see how I can test that. The head works as other heads I’ve seen before but right underneath it, it has suspension type components. It makes it easier to contour to a face.
For me, that’s where the magic stops. It touts that you can use it in wet or dry scenarios. I do not feel comfortable taking this in the shower or using it while my face is wet. It does not tout that high of a water resistance rating.
The trimmer it comes with I was not able to test it much. If you only pack one device I guess it could work. For me when I am looking at the mirror, I cannot tell what the trimmer is going to cut because the shaver is blocking the view. I will use another device to trim for that reason.
So overall, I do not see the point in getting a machine with so many features. I do not see any of it being utilized. I feel like the device could become ruined from water because the usb port is open. There is no latch to close it. There is a digital screen that does not need to tell me it is reading my face. I feel that is just wasting battery. Also, if they are going to add a trimmer, it should not be blocked. It should pop out from the side or the head should be removable where a trimmer module could be attached. It’s a great machine that excels at its main purpose but I am uncertain if it is worth paying more for the extra features.

Out of the box this Phillips Norelco cordless shaver comes with a protective cover for your blades, a little brush for cleaning, and your charging cord. Upon charging it and trying for the first time the first thing I did notice is that it’s noticeably quieter than my last electric razor. With the pivoting heads it did well and gave a close shave with minimal effort. It has the back razor for wider straight line trimming. I use it for my side burns and random hairs on my neck to cover a wider area. It has a few illuminated bars as the battery indicator. No numerical display like most I’ve had in the past but it’s sufficient. This is really a no bells and whistles entry level shaver. It won’t break the bank and it’ll get the job done. I’d have liked if they would have at least included a travel bag for so you don’t lose the brush or cover for the razor heads.
It gives a close shave though and is compact.
I would recommend it to those looking for a affordable travel charger or for a young man for his first razor
Samrio –
I’m generally a beard growing guy, with a fairly simple shaver for light trims. However, given my increase in travel, I wanted to try out a battery powered trimmer that didn’t require shaving cream, was easy to clean, and could also double trimming up my bald head on the go. This is my first Norelco product in a long time, and I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to use, the long battery life, and the ease of cleaning.
In the box you’ll find the shaver with attached triple blades, a protective cover/cap, a power plug with a USB-A end cable for charging, a cleaning brush, and the product manuals with warranty information. You will need to provide your own USB charging adapter, but any small USB charger will work (I used a spare charger from my iPhone). The unit will require some charging once you’ve unpacked it, but found that it charged relatively quickly. The handle itself is comfortable to hold, and has various light up indicators which display the charge, a cleaning indicator, and a travel lock indicator.
Using the shaver the first time was as easy as unplugging from the charger and powering it on. It also has a small trimmer on the rear of the handle, which can be used for basic cleanups and trims around your beard or sideburns. The shaver is big enough to cover a large area of the face, but small enough to shave over your mustache cleanly without pulling or feeling rough over your skin. Having small scaring around my lip area, other shavers have often been uncomfortable to use, but this was pain free. What I really love about this shaver is the ability to use it wet or dry, without fear of damaging it, and can even be used with a shave gel or cream. This made the head trimming much easier, as the shaver would just glide over the area freely.
Once you’re done with your shave, you can simply rinse the shaver under your faucet; again without any fear of damaging the device. I also appreciate that this comes with a protective cap which can be used for storing the shaver in a bag, and the handle button can be held for a few seconds (approx. 3 seconds) to enable a “travel lock” feature. This was INCREDIBLY helpful compared to another shaver I used, which ensures the device remains powered off while in your bag. You’ll notice a flashing lock indicator on the handle once this is enabled, and requires that you hold the power button a few seconds to power back on. When you’re ready to do a more deep clean, the device will flash with a clean indictor that appears like water drops. The shaver blades can easily be opened upward for more thorough cleaning and only required some warm water with the brush to remove all the hair.
Overall, I’m incredibly happy with the Norelco shaver. It’s pulling triple duty (pun intended) to cleanly shave around and trim my beard, plus use it shave my head to a close shave. I haven’t once experienced hair pulling, have said goodbye to razor burn, and don’t have to pack up spare blades for my razor. The manual even states that the blades only need to be replaced every 12 months or so and can be purchased directly from the manufacturer. I’m also happy to see this includes a 2 year warranty. While I’ve only used this for a week, I can confidently say I’ll continue using this for my daily shaves moving forward. So, if you’re in the market for a new shaver, give this Norelco a shot!

Very handy.
THE GOOD
~ Wireless
~ Charges quickly
~ Battery lasts a good while
~ Good shave
~ Feels good in the hand (ergonomic)
~ Massages face (somewhat)
~ Dry/wet/cream shave
~ can be used in shower
THE BAD
I haven’t found anything I dislike yet.
THE MEH (could go either way)
*Might* leave hair an atom thicker than a disposable razor & cream. (see below)
OVERALL
It’s been a while since I’ve used an electric razor, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve decided I really like this.
I generally will not go out in public if I haven’t shaved, but I also workout first thing in the morning. That was the one exception I had to being in public unshaven, because I normally shave in the shower.
I decided to test this out first as a dry shave before the gym. It went over my face easily and felt good, too. It’s like a mini massage. The two most difficult places on my face (probably like most men) is the chin bone and then the front of my neck. The neck skin is very sensitive and is difficult to shave because of the directions the hairs grow. This glided over perfectly and got closer than the normal razor.
Since then, I’ve also tried it wet and with cream. I think the dry shave is the quickest, easiest and best way for me. Wet it kind of moves the skin around a bit more, but that might just be user error and pressing too hard.
Overall, I think this provides a fairly close shave comparable to a razor and shave cream. It MAY be a touch less perfect, but not visible. I say that because while I feel very smooth after every shave, it seems the growth is a shade more the next morning. It could also be my imagination.
Another nice feature is this has illuminated power bars so you can see how much juice it has. There are three bars. I’ve used this every day for a week and have just dropped from 3 bars to 2. So, it seems to have very good battery life.
It has a visual icon to wash the blades. Washing is very quick and easy.
THE BIG QUESTION
Would I recommend this?
Absolutely. Because of the ease of use & cleaning and because of how well it shaves my neck, this is definitely my new favorite shaving method.

I’ve had electric shavers from all the major brands at many different price points, from cheap Xmas gift shavers to $300+ super recharging fancy schmancy self cleaning units. This unit is squarely in the middle. High quality, midrange shaver that does exactly what it sets out to do: give a good daily shave at an honest price point without a ton of gimmicks or over promising. The shave is comfortable, and fairly close. No razor burn, and results are acceptable for face and neck. It’s comfortable to hold and handle. Glides well. I shave the top of my head with a regular German razor for smoothness, so I don’t know how this shaver would do for that. The clean up is quick and easy. No lubricant soaks or taking the heads apart after each shave like some shavers I’ve had in the past. It’s a good brand, so I’m hoping to get a few years out of it, but from what I hear electric shavers are more of a commodity today than they were 20+ years ago. If you are requiring a daily shaver that is dependable, I think this is definitely worthy of top consideration.

I will begin by saying I am a new user to this style of shaver. My beard tends to grow rather quickly and constantly shaving with a razor often leaves my skin pretty irritated so I was very excited to an alternative option to maintaining my beard line without spending so much on frequent visits to the barbershop. I daresay I should have looked up a tutorial before attempting my first use. It works fantastic on clearing up stubble but the precision trimmer didn’t hold up as well as I had hoped. It wouldn’t catch those few strands of hair that would hang down from my beard line which kept me going over the same area many times until eventually I ended up cutting too much and had to remove my beard altogether. On that note, the foil shaver worked extremely well and left my cheeks and neck very smooth without the need of a razor. I would recommend this product to anyone who keeps a completely clean shaven face. For those who like a shaped beard, a more practiced hand is needed. I’m happy to keep this shaver handy as an emergency back up when I don’t have the time to visit the barber or desire a fresh start.

The Philips Norelco Shaver 5400 is your everyday shaver. It doesn’t have all the extra ‘fluff”; it doesn’t have a Bluetooth connection to your phone, and it doesn’t have a dock to self clean. It’s all shaver, with Philips Norelco’s SenseIQ technology that detects the amount of hair or coarseness of hair and adjusts power automatically. All you need to do is turn it on and go.
Setup is bare minimum and the lithium-ion battery needs to be charged out of the box. Charge time for the 5400 is 1 hour and will yield 60 minutes of run time. It comes with an included USB-A cable; the connector to the 5400 is proprietary, so don’t lose this cable.
Performance is very good. I am able to get a very close shave down without any hair pulling or skin irritation, and the 360 contour heads flex and adjust to maintain skin contact. The 5400 is very, very quiet during its operation and you might think that it is acting weak, but it’s completely opposite.
The Philips Norelco 5400, like many other shavers, excel when stubble first appears. Shaving everyday or every other day, depending on how fast your shadow appears, is the target audience for this type of product. Anything longer than that and you will have a bit of trouble trimming down. It does come with a built-in pop-up trimmer, but I did find it a bit flimsy as it doesn’t completely lock down during use (as in, it will move on its hinge when slight pressure is applied to your skin). But overall, it’s very, very good. The technique for using a 360 shaver is using a “wax-on, wax-off” approach. Using small circle motions, you can get a whole lot of hair removed quickly and boy does it make my skin feel pretty smooth. I rock the bald look, so I also use this on my scalp and it is almost as good as a razor, without any nicks, cuts or irritation.
Clean-up is as easy as a flick of a switch; the razor heads easily pop off on a hinge and allow all the captured hair to be easily disposed of. Since the 5400 is a wet/dry, you can run the head over water to get it all rinsed out without worrying about damaging internals. If shaving while showering is your thing, then you can certainly run this while doing so. The foil is rated for 1 year, so you won’t have to change foils often, which is a big plus. Also, the blades self-sharpen so you don’t have to worry about hair pulling and related discomfort.
Finally, there’s the price, which is a bit odd in terms of what’s available from Philips Norelco. For $10 more of the MSRP of the 5400, you can move up to the 7000 series that includes the Nano SkinGlide Coating, SkinIQ and Bluetooth connectivity…and even a travel pouch! So I feel like that even though the 5400 is a solid shaver (and I have no complaints, to be honest), a consumer might just drop the additional $10 to get a lot more for their buck. I took a star off for pricing because I feel like this may be overlooked just on price alone.
Overall, it’s a very good shaver; I’ve been using it daily and it hasn’t disappointed me in any way.

I have used Norelco products since I was a teenager. There is no other product that offers the smooth, up close and gentle shave like the floating heads on this razor. The grip is comfortable and easy to move over the face.
There are different models with different floating heads and the shape and floating design of this 5400 model is my favorite one. It seems to glide across my face easier than other models without the floating heads.
The razor itself charged quickly and holds a charge for quite some time. This model does not come with a charging base and does not include a charging plug, so you will need a USB charging plug in order to charge the razor.
The shave was comfortable and I was able to get very close with no stubble. The popup trimmer works well and is handy for beard trimming. I did not encounter any burns due to the smoothness of the razor heads. The razor does a great job on all accounts.
It is easy to clean and maintain with the heads popping off easily. A brush in included to help with removing the whiskers from inside of the unit.

The Norelco 5400 does a decent job but I think my face may still be getting used to it. I have historically used a three or four blade disposable razor but I have wanted a shaver that I could use in the shower, without shaving cream, and if necessary, on the go.
There is a battery indicator on the front and I have had good luck with the life of it. Going through at least five shaves without having to charge it has been great. It comes with the cable that you plug into a USB A block that you may have for other devices around the house.
The shaver head flexes very easily around your face and adjusts as you go along the different places like your chin, cheeks or upper lip area. The shave itself is definitely not as close as a razor blade but I’m happy giving up the occasional nicks and cuts that come along with them from time to time. There is also a trimmer on the back that pops up for side burns or beard and mustache trimming.
After use, you just press a button on the front of the razor head cover and it flips up allowing for a quick rinse to clean it out. Push it back in place and you’re all set.
I am very happy with it overall and am looking forward to an easier, less painful shave going forward.

I have used this Phillips Norelco rechargeable shaver 3 times and each time I use it, my shave gets better. I had previously owned a Phillips Norelco about 5 years ago and for some reason I didn’t buy new razors for it. I have to shave at least 2 times a week and sometimes 3 and I never look forward to doing it. I have really sensitive skin and even with expensive razors, my skin will sometimes still get irritated. As I stated previously, I have used this Norelco 3 times and not once has my skin gotten irritated. The other primary reason I really enjoy this rechargeable shaver is because it does provide me with a smooth close shave. Out of the box you will need to charge it to get it to full capacity, but after 3 shaves, I still have 2 out of 3 bars of juice left, so it looks like I won’t have to worry about constantly having to charge it. It is very easy to clean, I just run it under some strong pressure water and it is ready for another use. Another main reason I really like this Norelco shaver is because it is a wet or dry shaver. Since I have to shave quiet a bit during the week, I don’t have to worry about shaving in the shower. This Norelco also comes with a nice little pop-up trimmer that comes in handy when I have to do my sideburns. Overall, I highly recommend this Philips Norelco rechargeable shaver if you are looking for a good quality shave.

Very smooth shave and doesn’t need to be charged after a few days.

I have tried several before. This one is the best . It’s smooth and soft

Works well, and good value for the money. For awhile all the Norelco razors NOT made in China were quite pricey, and after thirty years I stopped using them and switched to Panasonic for a few years. This one provides as good a shave as an electric can, and is not irritating my face. Hopefully the replacement heads are better than the switched-out replacements for my last Norelco, which received some well-deserved bad reviews. All in all, so far so good.

Works great dry, but even better wet with shaving cream!

I’ve used nothing but Norelco (now Philips Norelco) electric razors ever since I was 16 years old. I am now 65 years old. Over the years, they’ve progressively improved. This latest purchase is by far the best one I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning & using. It takes several shaves to run down the battery, and it charges right back up again in less than an hour. I’m amazed at how close the shave is with this latest 5400 model. Very close, very quick.
Pete13 –
Very good razor. Good smooth shave. Dry shaving was smooth and no snagging.
Theponch –
It shaves very close to a shave without the annoying burns of a razer. I like it. I say I prefer a cable that hooks it up to an outlet to get more power like a regular corded trimmer. Does not work on full on grown beards past even at 1/2 in length. It works great but it should have a corded option as well. That’s why 3/5.

This don’t work for my husband. It didn’t give him the close shave he wanted. There were hairs left behind.

In my opinion the Philips Norelco shaver is a must-have item for anyone who suffers from hair on their chin.
I had an earlier version of it from 2011, when I first started shaving. It was a great shaver as well, but it had rusted over the years and I needed a new one. This model, the Shaver 5400 is versatile and precise. I can cut short outgrown hair with minimal difficulty. It is also light and will not trouble older users with arthritis in their hands. I can wholeheartedly recommend this product to those seeking a medium to high priced shaver.
