TechT –
Very reliable with bright and long lasting bulb. Optoma has never let us down, this is a good model for the price.
BBBB –
Easy to use and terrific quality. We’ve used it outside at dusk, and it’s easy to see. After dark, it’s amazing.

This is my first projector, and I did a lot of online research prior to selecting Optoma as a brand and this particular model, the HD146X. We have used this projector indoors, with a fixed screen, and outdoors with a portable screen. You won’t be able to watch this (or any projector) outside in the daylight, but it provides a bright and clear picture in dusk and in a room with some daylight coming through window blinds. With 3600 lumens, watching during the daytime (as long as windows are somewhat covered) works quite well. At night, it looks really, really good. From sports, to movies, to video games, it projects a fantastic, bright, 1080P picture. It’s easy to set up and operate, as well. It’s not overly heavy, so it is easy to move from inside to outside, like we do.
A couple of small negatives: (1) the projector, while touting itself as being quiet, is not “whisper quiet” and does put forth a “whirring” noise that you can hear quite audibly if you are sitting close to it; and (2) the built in speaker is NOT what you are going to want to use for anything, as it is not very loud at all, and is drowned out a bit by the noise of the fan/device. What we did is to hook a bluetooth transmitter to the audio out jack on the speaker and send the audio to a huge and powerful bluetooth speaker. With this setup, we have a full movie-theater like experience, and it drowns out the noise of the projector (easily) and is a really fantastic experience. With that setup, for example, we watched Star Wars in our driveway and it was just great.
Overall, I would highly recommend this projector. I cannot compare it to a 4K projector, or even more expensive projectors generally, but for me, you get a great picture for the money.
BackydCinemaFan –
Excellent picture. Very bright with great looking blacks.
Using for backyard movie nights.
Very basic with only one HDMI input and one minijack sound output. Minimal zoom restricts placement. Internal speakers are barely audible so connection to a sound system is a must.
Good for the price.

We purchased this projector to use outside and it has not disappointed us. We also compared/tested this against a cheaper projector found on a competitor website which had double the amount of lumens and this one was much brighter due to the high quality glass.

Excellent image reproduction with some degree of image control to allow your own adjustments of your source inputs. It’s bright enough to use in dimly lit spaces or at dusk without much fuss. Obviously, at its best when used in full darkness. Remote is useful. The only serious problem is the console audio speaker. It’s awful. The sound from the actual unit, even at full volume is low and non dimensional. It’s impossible to hear outdoors. What was the manufacturer thinking? It’s a joke. Luckily, there’s a mini plug audio aux output and if you attach a speaker or an amp, it passes the audio well to these sources that can really boost it. Adding an external speaker or patching it to your existing stereo system saves the sound. On every other level it’s a fine product. Not too heavy or big and it’s has a remarkable throw – meaning you can really enjoy BIG images with true clarity. Invest in a screen or come up with some innovate, cheap ideas with bedsheets. This is a worthwhile purchase. It looks very good and does the job – just get a speaker!
Matt –
Good price
Good quality
Long lamp life
No complaints here
TaraKC –
We love this projector and use it for outdoor movie nights all the time!
I really only have a couple complaints. The sound isn’t very good but we Bluetooth (from either our laptop or firestick) to a speaker and it works very well!
It gets really hot and take a little bit to cool down, not the end of the world.
Overall, I would highly recommend this to a friend. The quality of the picture is amazing.
Norcalute –
Purchased this projector to have movie nights outdoors with the family via my Roku. Picture quality is great and very bright. I hooked up a Bluetooth adapter to the Aux port and have two speakers with stands that I connect with Bluetooth. Very happy to the quality. Watched Avatar the first night and picture was crisp and colors were vibrant. This projector exceeded my expectations. Would have been nice to have built-in Bluetooth and an extra HDMI port, but overall this is a great projector for this price.

I hate to even give this projector one star. The first one I ordered arrived with no remote. After much angst I finally got Best Buy to ship another one to me with the remote. It worked exactly one time. When I plugged it in to show a movie the next time I got a flashing blue light, fan came on, then the machine continued to shut of and on with no light. Reading through the help pages I have found this is a common problem and is not one that can be easily fixed. I am returning it and will never buy it again.

Very good quality and very easy setup and excellent picture quality

Went through two other entry level protectors on Amazon and this one takes the bank. This should really be the baseline protector. Picture quality is great and more importantly clear! The sub 500 ones have a huge issue with clarity. The brightness on this is also good. Can be used during the day with the shades down and at dusk outside. Speakers are bad. Like almost unusable. This replaced my 65″ 4k Sony for the past couple months just because this thing looks awesome blown up on 120″.
Spriteguy23 –
Works great! Glad we purchased this to replace our other projector.
DK4511 –
Excellent Projector. Very high resolution and even in the day time or light, the picture quality is amazing.
LeoH –
Great projector, and the price.
I bought the projector mainly for the 3D.
shivamgupta –
The Picture size is smaller than expected, also it makes lot of noise when switched on. I have returned the unit as it stopped working after few days only
DStar –
Decent beginner projector. Definitely not a higher end quality product. That will cost you over $1k.
Rodhammer –
Just got this today and I’m very pleased with the product ☺

Silent without any loud fan blowing with distraction and the price is amazingly good picture quality.

It’s was open box. Excellent condition. Great view, I’m so happy with the purchase. I recommended it open box items. Than you!
Sabols –
Impressive quality and picture. I use it to play Call of Duty on a large scale.
Meca –
Great brightness with vivid colors! Easy menu for effortless operation!!
A+ all the way!!
Grant –
Great basic projector, nice and bright. Would like to see more image shift & zoom settings, but I’m sure you get those as you move up in price.
Only the middle front foot is adjustable.
I’m using it for an outdoor projector on a 15ft screen. So paired with an adjustable projector stand I’m able to position the projector exactly where it needs to be.
Electricplains –
Easy to set up, the only con is one hdmi port. The picture is good and easy to adjust.
Mike –
This is a great projector with a nice picture. Super clear and easy to use. We use it for backyard movies!
basest –
The projector is easy to use and has a great picture. I’ve used it outside against a screen, and indoors against a wall. The wall was a taupe/beige color, but whites still looked white. I thought i’d need a screen, but it turns out I do not. If I had any complaint, it’s that the unit does not come with a lens cap, so I have no way to protect the lens.
BestBuyer –
More crisp than Epson at the same price. I wish the picture can be a bit larger. Speakers aren’t good. You need external speakers. In general, still a great projector for its super clear picture.
PHLNJ –
No sound, they don’t tell you to order speakers with this, but I will! There is sound, but it comes from the project, and it’s not very good.
Phani –
Awesome. Good compact for my media room unless you are looking for a 4k projector.
Nair –
Good picture quality and High definition performance.
Value for money.
ruhroh30 –
Great value and quality for the price. Not 4k but good enough.
Foolio1247 –
Great product fantastic value for the price. Would reccomend.
ODB23 –
quick replacement for basement theater, fit just right and wow picturs on the 120″ screen.
UgLY –
Really good projector at the price point. The image is very clear, very quiet, and easy to use. Highly recommend
Puppet –
Needed an updated projector for our church that was able to connect to laptops and tablets via HDMI and USB, and this projector fits the bill. Great video quality and easy setup and use. One setback is the audio quality. But with an external speaker, it works great. Would recommend this to anyone seeking a quality projector at a great price.
Jennifer –
Fantastic projector- excellent quality and very easy to use. Very quiet, which I heard was not the case with others. My son took this to college and loved hosting movie nights and video game sessions in his room. Now if only he would have gone to class…
PrashanthkumarK –
After 8months of use, I feel this is the best projector for home entertainment.
WanderingHobbit –
So far happy with the quality of the machine. Does get quite hot because it is a lamp. The built-in sound is usable but not great quality for a permanent setup, very happy with the audio-out option. The remote is generic and has an option for a second HDMI, although the projector does not have a second port. Which I was aware of, but it confuses others who try to use it. My husband and I travel a lot and we chose this projector because it fits in a backpack and is very bright on a variety of backgrounds.

8/18/23 – This is a solid projector with a great picture and easy setup. I just set this up today with a fire stick, using a bluetooth soundbar connected to the firestick. It runs very, very hot, so make sure it has airflow. A lot of picture mode options as well as keystone adjustment, which is useful if you are mounting it low or high. Also has a ‘wall color’ option, and adjusts the picture to best match what color wall you have. I’ve just set this up today, but am satisfied!
CoryT –
Got this for fun movie nights outside. Love it. Very bright and looks amazing! I have a 110in screen and my ps5 looks great on it. Zero lag time on it
RobertR –
Great projector for the money I was very surprised by the picture quality
Mike –
Beautiful picture! Easy to set up, the colors look great, all of the controls are easy to figure out, and it’s just all-around a great budget projector!
Will –
My last Optoma projector lasted at least 10 years and was rock solid other than replacing bulbs. It finally died about a month ago so I started looking for replacements. This Optoma HDX146X was a great relatively low cost replacement. Its sharp, bright, and works great for my needs which are movies and gaming.
Gabe –
The image quality is very good from this unit, especially at this price point. Very bright, visible in low ambient light. Good colors and contrast. Sharp for 1080p. Cant complain.
If you are using this for entertainment you absolutely will need a separate audio solution, the built in speaker is super quiet and lacks bass, but it will be fine for image only uses like presentations or slide shows.
