Onkyo has long been struggling with HDMI issues, after my TX-NR 809 , i had read that Onkyo had overcome many of those problems, so when the oppertunity came up to by tge TX-NR5100, i thought it may be a better product, boy was i wrong, still having HDMI priblems, and now CEC and eARC as well, I literraly have to power reboot it every morning else the audio from both TV, cable and apple tv, goes into never land and does not come back until the TX-NR5100 is power rebooted (hold the power button for 5 seconds), sorry to say, I would not recommend.

Excellent sounds. Coming from a 10 yr old Yamaha didn’t know what to expect. Awesome sound and features.

Excellent unit and a great price! Easy to install and very user friendly.

Returned my first one for a failed subwoofer output. Should’ve just got my money back. Exchanged it for another one and after only 4 months the hdmi failed. Won’t output from any source setting.

Kelken –
Great value and quality item. We bought it to replace an existing receiver that needed updated. This new one was fairly easy to set up for us inexperienced buyers. Highly recommend.

Sounds great. Easy to install. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

I will say at the least this receiver sounds incredible when it works. It is hooked up via CEC meaning when the TV is turned on, it also switches on the the receiver. Problem is there is no sound coming from the receiver. This happens every time. I’d have to unplug the receiver, count to five and plug in back in and then it will work. This became a real hassle after awhile, so I decided to disable the CEC function on the TV and receiver to turn everything on manually. That did not resolve the issue. Same problem. I’d have to unplug and plug it back in to work. I did a firmware update to no avail. This is unacceptable to pay this much money for a product that does not work properly. I must have gotten a lemon, because Onkyo is a reputable brand and the customer reviews are pretty good. Now I have to go through the headache of packing this up, pay for shipping, and pay for insurance to send it to an authorized Onkyo service center. I wish I had gotten Geek Squad Protection. Lesson learned.

Works perfect! It works like a receiver! Highly recommend.

i like the way it hooks up but i don’t know if it’s my speakers or the unit but in order to get the full effects of the surround sound i have to turn the volume up way high like around 70 to 80 so over all its a nice unit
PaulH –
Great power and clear sound. I have it connected to Bose 301 speakers and a Klipsch sub and it gets loud and stays clear with zero distortion.
MichaelA –
Used this receiver for my 5.2.2 setup and does the job done.
bb1234 –
Has HDMI 2.1 pass through making it more future proof. Is a good unit

Was looking for a dual zone receiver and this fit our needs. Wish there was an option to play different channels in different zones but the functions this came with are great.
CarlosA –
This receiver works great, had all the hook ups needed, and was easy to set up!

First of all I’m a pro AV installer with decades of experience. I don’t generally buy retail but none of my wholesalers carry onkyo anymore so I went to Best Buy. First unit out of the box mutes volume as soon as you change it. It doesn’t matter if it’s on ARC, its own remote, or you turn the knob by hand. Then count 1001 1002 and volume comes back. You never have a clue how much you raised or lowered it. A disaster. I reset the unit, tried various inputs, same deal. On screen display also missing. OK bad unit. Go back and get another since my job was 150 miles away. Figured I would then return the bad one. Second one, has on screen display but on volume, same deal. Despite being the same exact model, one had banana plugs and one had push pins. Onkyo went insolvent a while ago and was purchased by Klipsch. It seems there are issues going on. Turns out Best Buy return policy is also 14 days now so I had to pay $50 a year to become a member just to return these two clunkers. I’ve a friend also in the business whom I contacted who has used the 6100, and didn’t have issues. Do all 5100’s have this issue? Can’t tell you. I wasn’t going to risk a third. Mainly we go to this unit for its sonos ready capability. I went back to a Sony instead. They also have the feature in the ES line.

It was a awesome product . But I am a Sony person.

Disney –
Works great – media room projector for a dozen to see and enjoy
MarioF –
It works amazing for my in ceiling speakers. I feel like I am in the movie theater.

Made the mistake of buying an open box item. There’s a reason it was returned. It didn’t work. The osd didn’t work. I guess it’s a common Onkyo issue. It should have been tested before it was sold again. I had to ship it back. Ended up with a TX-NR696 that works nicely. It was not an open box. The cost saving was attractive but obviously not if it doesn’t work

The Onkyo – TX-NR5100 80W 7.2-Ch. with Dolby Atmos Home Theater and Gaming AV Receiver with Alexa Compatible – Black is an excellent receiver. The Dolby ATMOS and DTS X adds a great sound to your system at a price one can afford. This is my third Onkyo receiver. This one is in my living room and my older model is upstairs in my bedroom. You will be happy with your purchase.
DALLAS –
The Onkyo stereo system delivers very good quality sound, and is easy to operate.

Davidafreese –
I am very happy with my Onkyo TX-NR5100 once I learned how everything works.
RichardC –
Just got it,but so far so good. Only complaint is there’s no place to hook up passive subwoofers. only active subs can be used.
MatthewS –
Great receiver. Only issue is that it can’t split apps – so we can’t watch one thing in our living room and listen to something else outside.

First of all: lots of positives with this unit. Good sound quality, a pretty full suite of features for a reasonably priced unit (especially if purchased on sale or open box), etc. It really pains me to have to leave a bad review, but there were a few too many negatives to ignore:
1. This unit WOULD NOT under any circumstances pass 4k @ 120hz. I tried 3-4 different monitors/TVs, 3-4 different HDMI cables, and spent hours poring over the instruction manual and google searches. I’ve probably tried over 50 unique configurations of the above for testing. I even spent over an hour on the phone with an Onkyo support who admitted that I had done everything right, and could eventually offer more than trying some debug mode you can enter that ultimately did not solve the problem.
We ended the conversation with him repeating “well it’s not guaranteed to work with all equipment configurations, so Onkyo isn’t going to process an exchange or any similar remedy because it’s not our problem.” That’s great, Onkyo support guy, but the problem isn’t that 4k @ 120hz doesn’t work under A configuration. The problem is 4k @ 120hz doesn’t work for me under ANY configuration. I have 8k high speed HDMI cords. I have a brand new PC and monitor. This may not seem like a big deal, but I SPECIFICALLY researched and purchased this model due to its confident marketing of 4k @ 120hz pass through capability. And Onkyo told me, in essence, “sucks to suck.”
2. It’s super lame and inexplicable why only the front left&right speakers have proper connections on the back. The rest are the tiniest terminals of all time that you’re going to have to strip some of the copper off your speaker wires to jam in there.
3. This is neither here nor there as it is very likely a Windows/driver issue, but I’ve had intermittent trouble getting Windows to recognize this unit as Dolby Atmos capable. YMMV.
Want to love this unit, but given the, from my perspective, pretty blatant false advertising and refusal to help me get a key marketed feature, I’m forced to leave a below average review.

WilliamT –
Very fine device. Clarity of sound is without peer. Easy to set up and use
Timothy –
Input switching is slow. When passing 4k, the screen will occasionally blip out for 10 seconds then return. Started doing this after about 6 months. Still a pretty good unit. Not enough HDMI inputs. Will replace soon.
CraigE –
Using it in my man cave. Awesome! I have my 5.1 surround sound system connected.
Stan –
Have had many brands of receivers over the years and Onkyo is great. Was using a 5.2 model for the past 6 years and decided to upgrade to Atmos. Terrific receiver at a reasonable price.
