I’ve used most of the anti-virus/internet security software solutions over the years. Some are better than others and that’s why I have an issue with McAfee. I’ve used McAfee in the past and if it came pre-installed on any laptop I purchased I would immediately uninstall it and go to my favorite. While it’s been a while since I used McAfee I thought I would give it a try.

I do like that some basic identity protection is part of this package. I love that the Premium Family package gets you unlimited devices. McAfee anti-virus has been around forever and it okay for what it does. Way back in the earlier days I found that McAfee used a lot of computer resources (memory and CPU useage) but that seems to be addressed in later editions. Anti-virus runs great and there is a web protection add on to browsers to alert you to any malicous sites or phishing attacks.

    A couple of things I don’t like:
I don’t like that if you do get a virus you must have auto-renewal setup on your account to be able to do virus removal.
I absolutely hate the user interface, especially for the data breach info. Duplicates should be handled together as some breach notices are reoccuring. If you clear one it should clear them all if it’s the same breach. I don’t need to be reminded 12 times that my email shows up on one list. Also it’s extremely clumbsy to clear notices. You have to address one at a time and go back to the main breach to proceed to the next breach to address. Breach notifications should be in a list and allow you to click on one to read and address and when done you go back to the list. I had a few data breaches, mainly email address, name and phone number going back as far as 2017. Good to know and while using another solution I had addressed them all, changed passwords if warranted… which McAfee will prompt you to do but there has to be a better way to clear notices. An improved user interface would be a huge improvement. The same clumbsy web based interface is on PC and mobile devices.

McAfee+ Premium is a very good security suite which offers great all-around protection for all of your devices. I only had a few minor issues with it. To begin, it’s not clear to me what is even included. I’ve noticed this trend among a few of the main security software companies. They use vague terms like “device security” but don’t really mention what it means. For example, until I actually installed the thing, I wasn’t even 100% clear if this product included anti-virus and malware removal. It’s almost like they go out of their way to avoid using those terms. But rest assured, these bare minimum features I would consider to be called a security software suite are actually included. My only other issue is that it seems like almost everything is a separate download. It makes it a little difficult to see what you have already downloaded and activated. At times, I wasn’t even sure what the point of the actual main software download was because every time I clicked on a different feature, it would just open up a web page and either take me to the feature (like identity monitoring), or tell me to download a different piece of software (like the password manager or VPN). It all just seems a little bit patched together. I’d prefer if it felt a little more consolidated. Given these issues, it is still a great product overall. The core anti virus and malware protection works as good as it always has, and does not bog down my system. The identity monitoring is pretty nifty. You give it some of your identity info like name, address, email address, etc., and it checks the dark web for any of this info that may be compromised. When I ran it, it found about a dozen old accounts on sites I hadn’t used in years and warned me that these sites had been compromised in recent years and that my email and passwords may have been exposed. It gives you direction on how to change these passwords and links you directly to the sites. If you’re like me and have trouble remembering or coming up with good passwords, one of the best features I found is the password manager. Once you activate it, any time you sign in to a site, it will ask if you want to save that login info. Now any time you visit that site in the future, you can just do a simple one click login using the password manager. It will even create strong passwords for you if you have trouble with that yourself. There is even a smartphone app that integrates well with mobile browsers and apps so that you can use the password manager virtually anywhere you will need to log in to an account. This is by far my favorite piece of the total McAfee suite. Overall I am very happy with McAfee+ Premium. I only wish they made it a little clearer what you were getting and what the differences in different products is. And also make everything a little more coherent and consolidated. Don’t have a separate app for almost every feature. Other than that, awesome software.

I like the McAfee plus premium family since not only do I have business devices I also have personal devices as well as my entire family and I want to keep everything protected. Mcafee offers unlimited devices one year subscription and that is just great.
With premium I can see who is selling my data and it does give you direction on how to remove it. I like that I can have parental control over other devices. Either at home or In other places I know my devices are protected, when the kids are at a public WiFi connection I want to make sure the information and the devices are protected and they are with McAfee.
It was easy to download and install and it lets you know where in the process the scanning is as well as the results. It also lets you know potential threats as well as high risk too.
I really like that it is compatible with Pc, Mac as well as mobile devices including kids tablets.
Overall it is great software to keep all the family devices protected while also protecting our privacy.

It has been some time since I have used McAfee software. To be honest, it often comes pre-installed on a new Windows laptop and I just delete it – this is the first time I have ever really used the McAfee+ and all of the features. I have to say, the first genuine moment of surprise is this is unlimited devices. In a world where most families now have a laptop+phone+tablet, the ability to install this without restrictions across a whole family is a bonus. Although FYI, the password manager is capped at 5 users (not devices, users). Setup was easy, download and install (Windows/Mac) or there’s a QR code that takes you to the relevant app store on your mobile device. I’m using this on Windows, macOS and iOS devices. The software footprint and background process impact seems very minimal (no noticeable lag or device slowdown). You are required to create an account to use the software, pro tip if you have an existing McAfee ID Theft monitoring then the same username/password can be used for the software. I like how McAfee gives you a credit score like number on how “safe” you are with your data protection and device security. That said, there are a few little gaps in features where it would be great if McAfee automated the process. One is “data exposed” where McAfee identifies where data brokers may be selling your data, but it only shows you where, it doesn’t automate removal without (it seems) requiring an additional fee. So removal is all manual and the directions are generic. The other is VPN. It works (great!) and seems fast (awesome!) but there’s no details of what country or where the VPN is connecting – which would be nice just to know. McAfee say it doesn’t share or sell your data (nice) but absent knowing what country it’s running through, hard to know if they might be subject to some weird local law. It also means the VPN is not a solution if you’re looking to bypass geoblocking. Overall, I’m very happy with McAfee+, it’s better than expected, easy to use, and user friendly enough that I am happy to have my whole family using it.

  5. TechGuru

McAfee+ Premium for unlimited devices is one of the top-notch security suites for families that is available in the market for providing real-time protection.

Purchased this product to protect all our family devices like windows laptop, MacBook, mobile devices, and a desktop after my current subscription of different product expired. We wanted to protect our kid’s device against virus, malware, spyware, online threats and wanted to have parental control to control against phishing. With this product, there is an option to see who is selling the data and doesn’t automatically remove it but provide just the guidance on how to remove it.

We choose this compared to other products on market, as it provides secure VPN with no login credentials and with just a click of a button to enable it. Its 24/7 identity monitoring is great and adds bank grade encryption that helps to keep bank details and passwords more secure.

It does come with password manager but is limited to only 5 users and not unlimited. Five user account for password protection from a leading competitor costs half the price of this and as we were paying separately for password manager every year, we replaced with this password manager that stores, creates and manages all your password for online credentials safely and securely.

Only con for me is it needs payment method to be stored in the account for automatic renewal of subscription.

Setup was straightforward if you have McAfee account. Just logged in to the account, entered the product key and installed in no time.

Pros: Great real time security thereat protection, No limit secure VPN, Password Manager, Unlimited devices, phishing protection, parental controls, Date breach monitoring.

Overall, it’s a top-notch security suite that will keep the entire family from online safe and secure including the dark web monitoring. Highly recommended for anyone who to need to protect the private and financial information online.

  6. CaneDOC

I am quite impressed by this security suite. We all know McAfee’s reputation as a leader in pc security and they aren’t letting anyone down here. Installation and setup were a breeze. After signing up, you can send emails and texts to all of your family members with links so that they may install on their devices.

After a quick and easy installation, it’s time to get the system working for you! You get to select how many or how few aspects of your life the system monitors. Plug in anything from your name, address, email, birthdate, social security number, credit cards, drivers license, etc. The system searches everything, including the dark web identifying any breaches where your information has been exposed or sold. It showed me any “identity search” websites that had my information for sale, and provided links and instructions on how to have your information not subject to sale. They also advise that you have to do it 2x per year or they can put it back up.

I am very impressed by McAfee. My wife and I feel much more secure now and it is relieving to know that this security suite is actively searching and will alert my when my information has been exposed. Easy 5 stars.

    INTRO
McAfee + Premium aims to be your 1 stop shop for any PC, any device, any browser, any location safeguard against malicious web threats. McAfee has combined all their add-ons into one comprehensive threat protection suite. Having used anti-virus software from many different manufacturers over the years, including McAfee, Microsoft, Norton, BitDefender, Avast, AVG, etc., this is the most complete and all-encompassing protection package I’ve seen to date.

    INSTALLATION
Having been a McAfee user on and off throughout the years, this was the most issue-free installation of McAfee I’ve ever used. The digital download is an installer that walks you through creating a McAfee account and getting basic antivirus protection installed and active. At first, I thought this was a letdown, with McAfee only installing its core components, but after installation and thinking about it for a while, I have decided that it is the best way to present their product. Instead of trying to bombard the user all at once with every single option that is available, McAfee wisely chooses to limit the initial installation and allows the user to customize it afterward. Not only does this make it faster for the user to get up and running, but also makes for smaller downloads and less of a chance of something going awry during installation. Taking it one step at a time is smart. Furthermore, since McAfee doesn’t provide you with unlimited licenses for all its components available in the + Premium plan, the user can install only what he or she needs and save the limited licenses for other devices.

As I mentioned earlier, the items offered with the yearly subscription is extensive. These items include: McAfee Antivirus (of course), TrueKey (a password manager), Parental safeguards for kids, a VPN with unlimited data, Dark Web Monitoring, and Personal Data Scans. Not only are these items available for the PC, but most are also available for your mobile devices too. AWESOME!!
McAfee has done an excellent job of making the setup process as painless as they can. I would still recommend some basic knowledge, especially when setting up a password manager and a VPN, but McAfee should be commended on their ability to make the software easy enough to navigate and configure even a technologically challenged person would be able to set it up with little trouble. Good job McAfee.

    NEGATIVES
As thorough and all-encompassing as the McAfee + Premium software is, it isn’t without its faults.

Negative #1 – Just the basic load of McAfee, without checking any options of VPN, child safety software, password manager, nothing, starts no less than 20 different processes running. Adding any additional software options during the download or after, will only add more items to the list. A machine that is marginally capable or starting to show its age before installation, can be brought to its knees.

Negative #2 – I find the McAfee homepage a complete mess. I absolutely hate logging in and using it. McAfee tried to make it easy on the user presenting them with just the most basic information, but each time you click on a menu item, it feels like you are going to a whole new website. There is just no cohesiveness to the design. Furthermore, the goal of making the site easy to digest is also a detriment. A user really must do some specific digging to get to the core of their software. Dark Web Monitoring is the worst. I get that McAfee is trying to make it easy for all users, but they really need to rethink their design. It’s OK to have a basic and simple landing page but give the user the ability to easily get to more detailed information from that landing page.

Negative #3 – While this is billed as a family package, understand that it may not be enough for your whole family. Take the Identity Protection homepage for example. There are numerous instances that McAfee’s “Family” package isn’t enough. Your purchase of their most comprehensive and premium product (also their most expensive) only gets you the option to monitor 1 SSN, 1 DOB, 2 Driver’s Licenses, 2 Health ID’s, 2 Passports. Hmmm. I would say 2 would be the bare minimum for a “family” plan, but only 1 SSN and 1 DOB stinks. There is more than 1 in a family. You, the spouse, but no kids? Very few “families” are without kids. Even so, the “family” package doesn’t even get you the ability to monitor a spouse’s most critical information.

    FINAL THOUGHTS
McAfee threw everything, including the kitchen sink at this. I’ve said it several times before in this review, this is the most comprehensive antivirus and identity protection suite that I’ve used to date, and I’ve used a lot of them in the past.

Even with all it has to offer, I cannot give the product a recommendation for the following reasons:

First and foremost, as you would expect, Windows Defender. While Windows Defender is nowhere near as full-featured and comprehensive as this McAfee suite, Defender does its job and does it well. I have been a Defender user since introduction and have yet to get a virus or have malicious software compromise my system. Knock on wood. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself.

A product that bills itself as a family package should take care of the ENTIRE family. I get it, you can’t have unlimited everything, but having the ability to only monitor 1 SSN and 1 DOB isn’t family. The family part of this product is too confusing and misleading. The “Unlimited Devices” is only for antivirus. In addition to the limitations for monitoring, you only get 5 VPN installs and 5 TrueKey installs (McAfee’s Password Manager). That isn’t enough. I would let the 5 VPN’s slide, but 5 TrueKey licenses isn’t enough.

Lastly, the McAfee website stinks. It is too confusing and convoluted to find information on your product and purchases. It took me almost 5 minutes just to verify the information in my previous paragraph. That is unacceptable. There are very few websites I can say need a complete overhaul, but the McAfee website is one of the worst I’ve seen in a long time.

The McAfee+ Premium program is working great so far on all 4 of my Daughters lap tops for school plus my phone. Being I have 4 daughters and 3 of 4 are gamers like most kids today, I wanted a software that can protect them all around for school and gaming plus just surfing the web. I have used other free software and it works decent but McAfee+ comes in strong and cleans up the leftovers from the others.

I ran the new McAfee+ on all their laptops and all came back with old issues the other software I used missed including many trojan and tracking issues. Knowing we are still finding issues on the laptops is scary as the other software I used was marketed as free for residential with the strength of a corporate account. What this shows me is their either lying to use our laptops for Beta growth into the main program or their corporate customers are getting hit with a lot of left over issues.

I have to bring up the VPN as well, and it is decent for what my kids need when not gaming. For normal school and web use, I am making them run the VPN and they said it is fine, but as soon as they try to game with a competitive style FPS, they are losing because their ping is usually in the 110 range with the VPN, without it is under 30 ping every time. So, I have to say, the McAfee+ VPN is definitely not gamer friendly.

I did run the Identity Cleanup for all my kids, obviously there was no issues there. I did setup their laptops with a password manager within McAfee+, this is going to save me tons of headaches in itself, so far, it works and works great.

And to talk about the title, the program uses very small amount of space compared to most others and runs cleanly in the background rarely seeing over 1% CPU usage unless running an in-depth scan.

I am super happy with the McAfee+ Premium program, I will most likely stay with McAfee after this experience with them.

McAfee+ Premium is a subscription based service that offers a plethora of benefits for my family. From antivirus and other software-related protection to identity monitoring, this package offers a lot. McAfee offers an intuitive setup process for all devices and users that need to be connected. Connecting other people and devices is an simple as sending an email which will contain all necessary codes and links. Upon signing up, I received alerts immediately about compromised data. This speedy feedback was definitely impressive and useful in showing me what I needed to do in order to protect myself. What I value most from my experience of using McAfee+ is the notifications that I got about data broker websites containing my personal information such as phone number, address, and other private things. The service does a great job of navigating me through the manual actions I would need to take in removing this information. Unfortunately, the Premium plan does not include the ability to get the data removed automatically through McAfee. However, Advanced and Ultimate users can utilize this “full service” option. I do wish that McAfee made this a standalone product or allowed for a straightforward upgrade to include this ability. I did find the website quirky to browse through at times but most of my web issues were eventually resolved. I did have a problem in which I could not add additional data to be monitored, but somehow it worked the next day. Despite the quirks, McAfee+ is great product to use to ensure protection for yourself and your family.

  10. KaeL

I’m usually not impressed with most of these protection services as they seem to be tedious, somewhat intrusive, and just a hassle to deal with…especially when the coverage is about to end. So normally when McAfee comes with a PC I don’t use it. This was the first time in a long time that I went through the process and really tried things out. I do like that this lets you use it on unlimited devices considering the massive number of eligible devices I have in my household, both Windows based and iOS. I think we have a couple of Chrome devices also but haven’t added those yet. I installed on a Windows laptop and desktop, a MacBook Pro, and 4 iOS phones so far. Installation was fairly simple on all platforms. I was able to remember an old McAfee account that I had so I didn’t have to go through the process of creating an account (a necessary evil with just about everything now). I will say that I noticed a little slowdown on my Windows devices but honestly, that seems to be the norm when adding anything from my experience so I can’t say this is a deal breaking negative with McAfee. My iOS devices showed no slowdown or issues. The features offered by McAfee appear to be on par with another brand that I recently tried but McAfee gets a little bit of an edge with the ability to use on unlimited devices versus capping at 3 devices. Where the other brand edges out McAfee is in the way that their identity monitoring feature works. The McAfee one is helpful but more on the generic side where it gives you just enough info to tell you that certain things may be at risk but doesn’t offer much in assistance with trying to correct other than some very general tips. This is something I likely wouldn’t have noticed if I had not tried one that was a bit more in depth and helpful so for a lot of users this won’t be a negative. This will also be appealing for those that have the need for unlimited VPN access. Time will only tell if I find this software beneficial enough to renew the subscription but it’s already clear that if you want access to the full abilities McAfee offers you need to be prepared to pay a bit more than this subscription charges. For a large majority of users though I think this will be sufficient and in some ways more than adequate enough to fit their needs.

This product solves one of the greatest problems of internet security app: the limit being set to install the app to specific number of devices. Yes, you can install this app to as many devices you want. And that fact alone is awesome. I got so many devices in my family: kids’ laptops, tablets, Desktop PC, phones, etc. even across different platform including android and Mac and this app allows me to install it to every single one of them without extra cost.
I like the approach of the app to educate user on how to improve their personal safety on the net. There’s a scoring system, which will improve as you use the app more frequently and make use of the features. Aside of the typical antivirus protection, the app gives you VPN, identity monitor and protection, as well as access to parental control tool and password management app. That’s a lot of features to offer. In particular, the VPN gives you many location options. When connected to the recommended server, the VPN gives you high speed connection and fairly low lag performance so that’s good.
The app feels pretty light as I don’t see noticeable impact to my device’s performance. Granted that the PC app doesn’t give you PC utility features such as registry clean-ups but these days to be honest Windows is good enough to run efficiently without truly needing such feature. Overall, this is a very cost-effective app that offers you great set of features.

  12. MoniMouse

This McAfee+ Premium Family with a 1 year subscription does more than I expected, and I’m glad. It can be installed on unlimited devices. I installed it on my PC laptop, PC desktop and two smartphones. The features that this software subscription provides are great, because it not only tells you about information out there on the Dark Web, but about data breaches where your information has been leaked, and exactly what information has been leaked, and how to fix and remove it. It has virus protection, a VPN, which is a virtual private network that keeps your location and data safe on public networks like wifi in a restaurant or store, and it also keeps your browsing safe on your devices at home too. It has a Tracker Remover that removes trackers that you get from surfing the web and on some gaming sites. It has Personal Data Cleanup, which goes out to more than 40 websites that sell your information. This is important because anyone, anywhere can search for you or some of your data, and then buy it from those sites. It has ID Protection that will search for the information you provide, including: 5 email addresses, 10 gamer tags, 5 addresses, 10 credit cards, 10 bank accounts, 5 phone numbers, 5 insurances, 1 drivers license, 1 mothers maiden name. I have one of each and it found over 290 places that at least one piece of information was listed. I’m in the process of removing them. It does take a while, but it’s well worth it. It gives you instructions on how to do it all. It’s a great software subscription that I plan to keep. I do recommend getting this if you have any kind of online presence, including those that just have email.

  13. Androidaholic

Macafee+ Premium Family is somewhat misleading with it’s name and description statement. I do not agee with this practice. I had to dig around on there website and go through the product to really find out what I was getting. What I found out was to truly get the full Macafee suite of services for your family you have to spend more than twice as much for the Macafee+ Ultimate. That being said I do really like Macafee Premium Plus Family and all of the features I just wish Macafee was more straightforward with the product description and it’s capabilities. While you can install it on multiple devices you do not get all of the features on those devices only the antivirus and 5 VPN’s along with 5 TrueKey password manager installations.I think should have not put unlimited devices on the product emblem when you are limited to five devices on those two items and one Drivers license and social security number. They need to more descriptive and forthright with the product details. That being said I do appreciate all of the features Macafee offers in one package. It is so much easier to manage all of your computational devices and personal info in one piece of software vs one for each area that needs protection. I will tell you that it will take some time to address and set up everything. Probably an hour or two maybe more depending on your personal situation and how many passwords were breached and how much personal online data you want to clean up from various people search and records search websites for example. In the end it is time well spent just be prepared to spend some time at your computer to get it done. Overall the value is good for the six main features of which are your protection score, personal data clean up Antivirus, secure VPN, ID protection and Tracker remover. Additionally there is a personal firewall, WebAdvisor, Quick Clean and Shredder, Vulnerability Scanner and App Boost. These are great features to have for example the App Boost blocks automatic videos on the web and Web advisor alerts you of dangerous sites while on the web when clicking links that may be leading you to trouble. In the end the value is there Macafee just needs to be more honest about what you are getting when you are purchasing this product. Now that you know a little more info hopefully you can better choose the Macafee family package that you want!

  14. ravedave

There are a lot of computer safety products on the market. This covers most of them.
Setup is pretty easy. I received a digital download you may not. You do need to remove old antivirus and firewall protection you may have installed.
There is a long setup, depending on what all you want to initially install and what you want McAfee to look for. On the identity monitoring I entered in my emails and name but not my SS#. I do not want to have that in another place. I know one of my email addressed was on the dark web, McAfee did pick that up. My other information I put in was not on the Dark Web.
You should always use a VPN when you can at home and for sure when you travel. I have Nord VPN and compared it to McAfee. They are both very similar in functions and reduction in speed. But McAfee may track your information where Nord is less likely. By default the Kill switch for the VPN is turned off. The kill switch stops the computer from sending traffic over the internet if the VPN shuts down.
The Firewall I set let McAfee do what it thinks is best. There is a safe site check McAfee wants to add to your browsers. The antivirus is pretty simple.

2 things that McAfeee could have added.
    Malware detection.
A password generator, or a place to store passwords

The price for this is pretty steep. But it is for unlimited devices like other computer safety products

  15. Pauliff

    McAfee+ is a great software.

Installation was easy and straightforward. I went to their site and activated my license. Once I had the license, I downloaded and then ran the setup on my Mac. I then did the protection where the system went to the internet to find if any of my information/account passwords had been compromised. It let me go to the sites which had the username and password and let me change the password. Once I had changed the password for the sites, I was able to confirm to the system so it could change my score and status at a higher rate.

I then went to my tablet and other windows 11 laptops and ran the installation which was just as easy to install. once installed I ran the scans and checked for any issues. I was glad to see there were no issues.

McAfee has stepped up to help users where we are today on the internet and shopping and living our lives with so many conveniences. I feel more secure on all my devices and am very glad McAfee is opening their system to mobile as well. This is very impressive software to say the least.

  16. BeingHonest

    Pro:
    -Light on your system
-Features that will scan and protect your personal data

    Con:
-VPN slows internet by a lot
-Notifications about features keeps popping up
-Going through personal data is unnecessary tedious

The suite was easy to install with setting each component is a straightforward process. It’s relatively light on the system and offers a lot of different protection. All the components work well, though some are more useful than others, while some are just tedious to go through. It tries to gamify your protection by increasing your Protection Score based on what features you’ve set up. The VPN is only good for light work, and slows down internet speed significantly.

    Antivirus and Firewall
Based on my short time with it, I didn’t find any issues with the antivirus or firewall. They didn’t prevent any games from installing and playing online. The virus scan was light on the system. I do get notifications about features and steps I can do to increase my protection, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn these types of alerts off.

    VPN
The VPN is best only used for light web browsing. Using it really reduces my internet speed, lowering it by 100 Mbps. The number of servers is also limited. The VPN will not work with streaming services, so those looking to watch content from other regions will be disappointed.

    Personal Data Cleanup
This feature will scan the web looking for sites that match your information. The more information you provide, the more you’ll get out of it. Once the scan is done, it will list all the sites, but you’ll have to contact each of these sites yourself to tell them you want the information removed. I only provided my basic information and there were already so many sites to sift through. This would be a very tedious process, so McAfee also provides a full service that will do it for you if you upgrade to a higher package. If you really want to scrub your data, then it may be worth it to upgrade.

    ID Protection
Another feature that scans for data breaches leaking your information. In my case, this was less useful. The entries that came up were mostly compiled lists that don’t give much details other than my email account and password. The whole process just takes so long to go through each one. If I click to see which password, I need to wait for a verifying email and enter the code. This happens with each entry. And once you go through each listing, it’ll play an animation and pop up every time. It’s unnecessary.

Tracker Remover, Web Booster, and browser extensions
The tracker remover will scan your system for store tracking data and cookies and remove them. The web booster will try to speed up your browser loading by stopping things like auto video playing. There’s other extensions you can install such as web advisor and password manager.

    Summary:
The product has very much improved this year in usability. On PC, Android and iOS, the features are easy to navigate and robust. On MacOS I found installation to be troublesome on Ventura but eventually got it working. Like many security products, there are ads for upgrades and many of the features are web based. With unlimited licenses, this is a good product and the VPN is a great feature. Family management is easy to use but limited.

    Pros:
    Robust feature set
Easy to use (except for Mac)
    Available on all platforms
    Great interface
    Good VPN

    Cons:
    Intrusive ads
Installation on MacOS not for a novice user
Unable to add folder exceptions, only file exceptions

    Installation:
I received a downloadable link. On PC installation was easy and simply involved downloading the link, entering your serial and then exploring the app and updating permissions as needed. Installation is just as simple on Android and iOS with the only modifier being to install a VPN profile. MacOS was tricky though. I installed the software on the latest version of Ventura, of which McAfee does not have specific instructions for as the menu layouts have changed in that OS version. The app provides some instructions to use finder to find specific files and add them to the privacy and security folder. I followed all instructions but the program would never properly load or activate some features. I uninstalled (another long process of finding multiple files in the file system and deleting them, using instructions at McAfee.com) then reinstalled the software and after a few tries it took all the settings to get it operational. The process could use some streamlining and McAfee should come up with an uninstall tool as other antivirus companies have done.

    Use:
I was very impressed with the PC and Android versions. The layout is intuitive and pleasant. My only concern is most of the privacy monitoring features are web based and require a lot of setup to get working properly. After that is done though, you have a lot of powerful privacy monitoring tools as well as a great software suite. The VPN works well with only a minor impact to my overall speeds. Scanning is fast and doesn’t seem to bog down performance. When trying to exclude some crypto software from scans, I could only exclude specific files, not folders. This made the process tedious.

Mac, iOS and iPad OS are extremely basic. The Mac software has scanning and VPN but less overall options than the PC version. iOS versions have only VPN and remote admin functions.

Of note are advertisements. On the PC I received constant pop ups to activate certain features or upgrade to different subscriptions. I got annoyed by these and I did not see an easy way to disable these as you can turn off security related alerts in the settings but I saw no feature for things that recommend upgrades.

    Family security:
The nicest feature of this security software is that it can be used on an unlimited number of devices. But, unless I missed something, it appears if you use it on another adult device such as your spouse, it will require the login for the account owner which I would say is a security hit right there. Second, the family management app (Safe Family) is only for managing child accounts and is a separate download from their website. Once you are using the software it is pretty decent. It allows for quick pausing of devices and specific app disabling. What is a little too simple is permissions for managing usage time. You can manage allowed hours but not time limits within the day. For example, 1 hour limits.

    Extras / Notes::
The Mcafee website allows for downloads or access of extras with your subscription. Items I saw listed are the True Key password manager, access to Family Safe, individual VPN downloads (also included in the McAfee Suite), ID Monitoring and Personal data cleanup.

Concerning True Key, it is a pretty good overall password manager and even supports Windows Hello. The only reason I will not use it as my primary manager is I do not see any option for password sharing with family members.

Last, on Mac, it appears to be a native ARM app which is nice for performance and battery life as can be seen in Activity Monitor (listed as Apple, not Intel)

  18. Goconfigure

When it comes to virus protection for your PCs you really can’t over do it. Windows 11 has some pretty great native antivirus and malware detection but stacking McAfee Plus with it does provide some good peace of mind. Installation is very easy. Activation is by 25 digit activation code; very familiar to a paid app or operation system installation. Once installed, McAfee Plus scans your computer for threats and, after a while, displays a logged report for your review. I really like the unobtrusive way the McAfee Plus antivirus software monitors silently in the background. My past experiences with various antivirus programs, including the older releases of McAfee, were very negative as the programs often used more CPU resources than the PC could supply and thus slowed my computers down significantly. I’m happy to report that I have not noticed any slowdown whatsoever after the installation of McAfee Plus. It’s also worth noting that it’s a lot easier to disable when you don’t require protection.

  19. dharr18

There is a lot to this suite of protection. Maybe too much. Trying to find things in the app can be cumbersome and not necessarily where you would think to look. Navigating the app alone is cumbersome. Why they have the ADD button at the bottom of the firewall rules perplexes me. I have quite a few apps I need to open ports for in my firewall, scrolling to the bottom every time makes it easier to just turn off the firewall, which goes against the idea of protection.

There is a lot of fluff that you can do or live without. The credit protection score…oops ID Protection score is a clunky way of making people feel safe. A high score may cause a false sense of security.

The important thing, it does protect against viruses and malware. Although it has not popped up with any warnings for me yet.

The included VPN is great for when you are working on anything that may require additional safety measures. Logging into banking, stock, etc profiles. Stuff you want to keep as secure as possible.

So far I have not seen the classic virus protection slow down, even when running a full scan. This is good. But my machine is a bit on the performance side.

The family install is quite nice. I have it running on my laptops and desktop. Also have it installed on my kids machines and my wife’s machine. No one has complained about it slowing them down.

The software appears to be doing what it is intended to do. I will feel better when it throws up a red flag on something.

One other annoyance is the browser plug-in. It seems to be activating itself randomly. Drives me nuts getting Yahoo search results when I actually prefer duck duck or Googles own search.

Outside of navigation and finding settings in the app. I really have not found anything to say “avoid this software”. I know that does not sound like a glowing endorsement, but the last thing you want is you antivirus acting like a virus and spamming you to buy this or that. The fact that you almost forget it is there is a glowing endorsement.

The design/developers need to rethink the layout. That cost this review 1 star by itself. Nothing makes me sadder than a bad design for a good product.

Simple to install. Perfect for multiple devices. Great price

  21. Mizzie

It’s working well so far. I had it a while back but they didn’t want to honor what was told to me so I left. It doesn’t slow the devices down so much as Norton does either.

  22. Luis

McAfee has been in the market for years and is recognized as an antivirus of guarantee. With this premium version, MacAfee is offering finally, an all-in-one product that can finally cover ALL the house devices and your needs. This is not a little think in a family of four.
Today, the traditional laptop viruses are just one of the areas where your family is exposed: phones, tablets or other devices are as exposed to ransomware or inadequate use or opportunity for thefth of your identity.
Installation is very simple, after creating your profile directly on McAfee web, you just need to download the software for the different devices that you plan to use. Saying that this is a simple process is really an overstatement because it’s. If your laptop has previous software, just removing it and installing the McAfee software is enough. I recognize that in one of the oldest laptops, the installation process was stopped for a version problem and the McAfee installation helper was able to fix it without any knowledge from my side.
In each download, the page recognizes the version to download: windows or android. As I said, very simple.
With an unlimited number of licenses, I don’t see a better investment than this version.
    Other elements that convinced me:
1.- No need to enter the information of your credit card for automatic license renewal. You could do it but this is not compulsory like in other software.
2.- The first scan is amazingly fast on all my devices and it’s obvious that you are always checking against the last update.
3.- An additional aspect that is also included with this license: is the VPN functionality for all the devices.
Yes, I recommend thanks to its simplicity, immense coverage, the trusted manufacturer, identity protection in the dark wen, and the VPN license.

  23. TechFan

In this day and age, you really cant have enough protection against viruses, hackers, stolen identity, etc. To protect myself and my family from these issues and to monitor what websites my children are navigating to, I ordered this and installed it. The thing I like most about it is that once it’s installed, there really isnt much you need to do besides setting it up the first time.

I have some other software for anti-virus and maintenance that drives me crazy because every time I log on, there is a pop-up asking me for this or to order that. I’ve played with the settings and still the problem persists. This is nothing like that. I usually dont even know it’s running. I do get reports telling me the status of things, but I can change the frequency if I want to and the information is quick and simple.

The other thing that shouldnt be overlooked about this software is the unlimited VPN. If you are someone who uses public Wi-Fi frequently, this is a feature you should definitely use. To be honest, the software is worth it just for that aspect alone. When I’m out and about, especially when I’m traveling, free internet access is great, but you put yourself and your personal information at risk. Turn on the VPN and you’re protected. I have used this multiple times on my iPad and MacBook while traveling or at a coffee shop and I havent noticed any decrease in speed or connectivity.

In a nutshell, this is great software with minimal interference, good parental controls and free unlimited VPN. For those reasons, I highly recommend it.

  24. GameOverSuckas

McAfee has been around for decades. It’s one of the first antivirus software packages I remember having on my fist personal computer. What I liked about this suite over another popular rival is the fact that they don’t have constant popups trying to sell you on something the software should already include. Telling you you should run a check on “this” and when you click to do it, it turns around asking you to purchase an add on to do what it told you should check in the first place.

Starting up and filling in everything on this suite was short and sweet. It had a very nice layout where you just went down the line filling in your items you want covered, whether it be an email address or social security number to see if it was included in a breach or the dark web. Immediately upon inserting my email it popped up that mine was compromised a while back on a few different occasions. You can also add multiples to each category. It has a tracker remover to keep sites from tracking your usage and includes a VPN you can use as well for more privacy.

Overall I think it’s a great package and they’ve made it easy for most anyone to use and comprehend. I’d definitely recommend this to others

  25. SciFiFan

McAfee has been a leader in Anti-Virus protection for many years. In today’s cyber world, products like this are more important than ever before. This particular bundle is perfect for the family. It provides protection for Windows, Mac OS, Apple IOS, Android, and Chrome. While the coverage lasts only 1 year, you can put it on every device that your family owns.

The installs are pretty simple. Just follow the instructions and you will be up and running in no time. McAfee used to just do antivirus, but there is a lot more built in now. When you first set it up, it runs a security scan. It ranks your level of security protection. It can then fix security weak spots and improve security. It has the ability to cleanup personal data. There is a built in VPN to keep your device secure. It removes data trackers and provides ID protection.

When I ran my first scan, it found my personal data on the internet 250 times. Some of these you can’t do anything about, other than know that the information is out there. It finds information on Data Broker sites such as those that say they can tell you all about a person by entering their phone number. My phone number is in all of those data bases along with my name and potentially address and age. Most of those you can’t fix, but there are some sites that allow you to remove your data. I got off of 48 sites. You are also going to see a list of data breaches that shows where your passwords have been compromised. You are going to want to use that list and change all of the compromised passwords. I had six passwords compromised and changed them all, just to be safe. The application allows you to specify what data to look for and you can look for things like passports, Driver’s license, Tax ID, Birth Date, Health IDs, User Names Credit Cards, Bank accounts, Social Security Number, Phone number, and e-mail addresses.

It really has opened my eyes to all of the information out there about me. I’m slowly getting as much as I can cleaned up so I have less to worry about. I suggest that everyone get this app to clean up their internet footprints and to protect you personal information.

McAfee premium + family, it did take a few minutes to get it to download and set up for some reason it kept taking me in circles to create an account and set up with my code I was provided, but once it was done it was pretty easy from there has you set up other personal information to check the dark web for security breaches, name search and how to remove your information it includes the links to those sites which is helpful. You can even enter you drivers license information to check for usage. It sets up VPN for 24/7 monitoring, has child parental control so you can keep an eye on them. I set up two authentication to access account. It was easy to add my other devices, phones, iPads, laptops it comes with unlimited devices which I really needed being that we have so many devices to have on the account. It took me over 20 mins to opt out from websites selling my information it was scary to know I was being searched and information address past and present, phone numbers all so easily available to people. I highly recommend McAfee premium + family if you have multiple devices. So far highly pleased with the product.

  28. sollyp

So it wasn’t until I actually had information stolen, that I started to take data protection and identity theft protection seriously. Any and all levels of protection is good. McAfee has a good track record when it comes to security.

The McAfee+ is their new top-of-the-line security software as well as adding identity theft protection. I think it provides a great all-around package. Setup is straightforward. As with all products these days, it does require an account or the creation of one if you do not have one. I really am not a fan of this but what can you do. It provides personal data cleanup, credit monitoring, identity restoration (in the event that actual damage is done after identity theft), unlimited bandwidth VPN, as well as unlimited installations on your family’s devices.

All in all, the McAfee+ Premium is an all-around package that covers unlimited devices in the family. It provides good antivirus as well as identity theft protection if your personal information does get stolen.

  29. KYTwinsDad

I think everyone knows the major companies offering malware prevention & removal tools with McAfee being one of the top 3 names you’d get if you asked everyone to name you 3 or 4 or 5 different antivirus/antimalware/internet security solutions. McAfee has been in the AV game for a long time so it absolutely is a brand I can trust. They aren’t going to go out of business tomorrow with me getting 0 updates for my antimalware solution.

So, prior to acquiring this McAfee product I spent the better part of a month trying to clean all the malware from every single system in our home. My significant other & I were the targets of targeted spearphishing campaigns which were brought about by a member of our home downloading cheats for offline gameplay resulting in them acquiring malware which allowed the attackers to see what type of work my SO & I do. Being in high level leadership we were prime targets as soon as they spotted us after gaining entry into our home via this softened security point. Prior to this I had not given much thought in regards to segmenting our network…but that has changed & is something I sk be doing very soon. I’m still trying to sort all this mess out. Again, the malware plus our being targeted & attacked was prior to acquiring McAfee but I do make a suggestion due to that attack.

Now on to the review. Let me offer two suggestions (and I’ll be reaching out fo McAfee to make the same suggestions): 1) put some sort of hash (such as md5) on your downloads, 2) allow for easy navigation to finding the executable download for your products WITHOUT having to log in. Why on both? First one is because part of the attack was a MITM attack where the downloads were either outright denied if AV related or even injected with malicious code or redirected elsewhere to grab the malicious code infused exe file. So knowing the hash would mean I cold spot this easier if I had an active malware infection that was doing a MITM type attack. Second one is because I did not want to login to anything until I knew I was malware free but yet i couldn’t download the software without logging in. i have a payment method stored in my McAfee account, I wouldn’t want to wake up and find I had bought 10 copies of a McAfee product while
I was asleep due to this bad actor logging on & purchasing some since they had a keylogger on the machines. Both of these not being easily viewable or done is a security oversight on McAfee’s part & I hope they correct it.

As for the installation & the daily use it was a breeze. I did not experience any major performance impact on any of our systems that I installed this on & I have enjoyed it thus far. It is straight forward, not complicated & easy to use. My non-techie SO has stated how easy it is to use, that it doesn’t bombard you with notifications & because of that she knows when it does notify us it is something important. This is a huge plus in my book because I don’t know about you but I get notification fatigue due to the bombardment of notifications from my phone. So thank you McAfee for not contributing to this.

All-in-all we are happy with the McAfee solution & only due to my having had an active malware issue prior to acquiring McAfee+ Premium that I even thought about the only 2 negatives I mentioned (no file hash easily found & not being able to download unless logged in). I’ll end with also saying that both could be there/easily done and I just overlooked it, that is entirely possible and if so then I definitely stand corrected.

If you need antimalware for the whole family then definitely give McAfee+ Premium Family a try! You won’t be disappointed!

  30. DerrixN

I used this for my family and trustworthiness software

  31. NoNameNick

The McAfee+ Premium Family offers several great features at a very affordable price, and covers unlimited devices which is great if you have a house full of smart phones, tablets, Macs and PCs like we do.

I installed the software on an iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air, and Desktop PC. (so far). The IOS/iPadOS and PC installations were seamless. The PC installation was almost automatic. The IOS/iPadOS installations required enabling VPN under settings, but that action was prompted when first opening the App. The Mac installation was a little more cumbersome, requiring setting permissions for four(I think) files in System Preferences, but still wouldn’t be a problem for the average user.

It’s nice having virus protection, and that has become something we just all know we need. So far it seems quite effective in preventing all types of malicious software. I’ve only been using it for a few weeks, so time will tell. My home network is protected by a relatively robust hardware firewall, but when travelling with my MacBook, I’ve had no issues on public WiFi.

Two features I really love in this package are the included VPN, and the Identity Monitoring. The VPN allows you to set your virtual location to several geographic possibilities, or to simply use whichever server is fastest, preventing hackers from identifying your location, and the identity monitoring searches the web for your personal information, and then provides instructions for removing yourself from online databases. I’m about half done with removing the information McAfee discovered by just taking care of one website every few days.

Overall, I feel that this software provides excellent features for the price. Especially with protection for unlimited devices within one’s family.

McAfee Antivirus provides robust protection against a wide range of online threats, including viruses, malware, and phishing attempts. Its user-friendly interface and efficient scanning capabilities make it a reliable choice for safeguarding your devices. However, some users may find the software’s system impact and pricing options less competitive compared to other antivirus solutions on the market.
