AdamM –
Absolutely fantastic unit! I needed to upgrade my Sonos AMP for a proper AVR due to lack of HDMI ports.
Paired with KEF LS50 Meta bookshelf speakers along with KEF KC62 Sub this thing performs great and supports any type of modern decoding. Lack of 1440p support for PS5 (can do 1080p and 4K) is not heart breaking but I haven’t seen AVRs on the market that support it natively.
Integration with Apple TV, Turntable and other stuff is fantastic too and QMS, auto switching and Audyssey (yes I would prefer DIRAC live but at this price point is impossible) is fantastic and overall I am very happy.
Keep in mind that due to slim form factor, you only get 50W per channel so make sure your speakers are efficient. I keep my volume at between 50-65 (out of 98 available) and eventually will add a center speaker and remaining speakers to complete 7.2 setup.
Even initial setup and confirmation was great, app is responsive and all on screen setup and settings menus are in 4K which is welcome as well.
HEOS works great for music and with multi zone and multi sub support you can really create interesting setups.
Again, coming from SONOS AMP which was simple to operate but lacked advanced control for its phantom center channel – often vocals in movies would end up muffled due to poor mastering or mastering in general for surround only.
Cinema 70s improved the clarity to a point where in the near future I dont need to even look into a center channel.

I had the previous model NR1710, which had developed major issues that forced me to replace it. Although I really didn’t want to spend $1200 on a new receiver, the good news is this receiver not only has a more attractive look and build quality, it has a faster user interface when changing settings, faster HDMI handshake when using video pass through, and it has multiple pre-outs with the ability to set the receiver to allow the external amp(s) to handle the load, keeping the receiver cool when it’s not doing the amplification. It also has some additional audio features available within the app options, like dialogue enhancement that I’ve found quite handy for those movies or shows where dialogue is sometimes buried in the mix and hard to understand. It even has different levels of enhancement you can choose from.
The sound quality for movies/music is excellent. The HEOS music streaming feature may be better sounding than the NR1710, but I can’t say for sure. It’ll sound good to most people, but its functionality does have some minor issues if you have your music collection stored on a NAS that doesn’t use a particular server application.
Overall, I’m quite happy with this new slimline Marantz model and I would recommend it if you live in a smaller place, like an apartment, or have your system located in a small to medium sized area. It’ll provide enough power and features for most average needs, and if more amp power is needed, you’ll have the ability to connect external amps for multiple speakers using the pre-outs.

Marantz makes an incredible sounding receiver and paired well with my B&W speakers.

This little system pack a punch, I really enjoy it for playing movies.

Impressed to the max. You have earned my respect. This receiver is all as advertised.

Overall this is a nice unit, and it is a decent upgrade from my AV7701. This is a reasonably priced receiver that also supports external amplification, which I needed. I would like it much better if it had dual HDMI outputs. A low level stereo output would also help a lot. I use this unit to supply video and audio to a secondary room in addition to the local Home Theater environment. The problem I have is twofold. Having only one HDMI output forces me to use an HDMI “splitter” to create a secondary output for this second room. Unfortunately, the output from this unit has no audio because it knows the audio is being done by the receiver. So no audio goes to the second room.
To work around this I needed to split the signal before it goes to the secondary space, which forces me to do it before it goes into the receiver. That way the HDMI signal still includes audio. But that also means that I cannot use the selection abilities of the receiver to switch between my 4K disk player and my AppleTV 4k. Luckily I normally use the AppleTV, but this is a significant issue for me. Why can’t the HDMI output include audio? The TV can be set not to use it, or to have the volume muted. This is a very disappointing weakness for me. Otherwise, it is nice. I like the shorter height as well.

Solid AV. Need to either have very efficient speakers or use the pre outs to a separate amp if you want to get the most out of it though.
Bimmer –
Easy to setup walks you thru the whole way ..
really nice sound!

Was on the fence for a while about my next AVR. Worked with Daryl at my local best buy, great guy, very knowledgeable and went out his way to hook this up for me to demo.
First things first, 50 watts seems like not a lot and I can safely say, this slimline delivers and then some.
Setup was super easy and runs my 5.1 plus some 2 remarkably well.
Sound wise the AB amplification is warm and detailed.
Will be utilizing the pre amp mode at some point but to be honest, if you are in a small to medium room, this AVR may be all you ever need.
Oh, and it’s great to look at as well

In a word “fabulous”. Easy to install right out of the box. Beautiful design. User friendly.

It’s a marantz… Second one for me and absolutely love this system jam packed with features with low profile which was a must for me!!
Great power and features it pushes plenty of power to make a great sound!!!! Front display is absolutely awesome as its super sharp and will make any system look super visually appealing.

Marantz has come a long way with the slim line series. This is no exception for this full featured receiver. If you were going to run this in a 2.1 or 3.1 set up, it will be perfect for your small towers or your bookshelves. However if you are looking for a full 5.1 surround sound or larger, you will need a something with a bigger amplifier. This does have a lot of of pre-outs on it so you can use with a separate amplifier, however, if you were looking for everything new all in one component for a larger system, you will need to consider the of the Cinema line of receivers to power your system.

Really great receiver! High quality, best sound, and has all the latest features you can think of. Would definitely recommend to a friend!

Our new Marantz receiver does everything we need it too. And the Bluetooth speaker is an added bonus for our hard of hearing members

A nice amp makes watching TV. A good time will have issues, but just turn it off and turn it back on and they are resolved.

Great product! Easy to use! Would definitely recommend!

My new Marantz Cinema A/V Home Theater Receiver is the workhorse of my home theater system. Its sleek low profile makes for a beautiful piece of equipment. I’m not gonna lie, it was installed 11 days ago and I am still on a learning curve to figure out how to operate it to the best of it’s ability.
JoeO –
Don’t be scared by it’s small size or low WPC rating. Excellent sound quality, extremely easy setup. It drives my Klipsch Reference surround speakers no problem!!!

I had come to the realization as I started to step by step modernize my home theatre that I really needed to replace my extremely outdated SR7007 that was the state-of-the-art flagship model for Marantz some 10+ years ago. But I didn’t want to spend that much or more money again and deal with 32 pounds of the beastly flagship Cinema 40. Nor did I need the 9.4 channels for my smallish man cave. Even the 50 and 60 models were still more AVR then I really needed. This Cinema 70s unit was the last of the current Cinema line to be released to market. The much smaller and much less expensive 70s looked like it might be perfect for my needs. Still high levels of build quality. Still warm, detailed Marantz sound quality. Modern 4K and 8K pass through. Full modern surround processing with several of the latest “pseudo” surround modes for stereo signals. Half the size and weight of the larger units. The one thing of concern was “only” 50 watts per channel. Well, I can say with confidence having now lived with the 70s for several months in a modest sized room, say a 300 to 400 sqft den with a normal 8ft ceiling and normal efficient speakers (I’m still using my vintage PSB Imagine series running at about 88 dB SPL and 5.1 channel configuration) I have no problem filling the room up with movie and music sound that is rich and exciting with the volume set at about 60-65 out of 100. The unit is very easy to set up and the Audyssey room correction is as usual a straightforward one and done set and forget proposition. I especially appreciate the easy one click, on the fly to access dialog enhancement and the lip synch settings that can slow down or speed up the sound timing. Streaming apps are notorious for lip synch issues!
So, to sum up, if you have a small to modest sized room, decently efficient speakers and don’t need more than 7.2 or 5.2.2 (Atmos) channels of surround sound you can save some money and space with the 70s. It’s highly recommended.

Nice sounds. Worth the price. I would get it again.

Excellent sound quality and ease of use with the on screen UI, I’m bi-amping B&W and it made them come alive, not joking.
Bob24 –
The Cinema 70S home theater receiver is a very compact and nice looking unit. The reason for only 3 stars is 1. the audessy speaker calibration system doesn’t really work, so, I had to manually make adjustments. 2. The price is very high for what you get. I was willing to pay it to get the small size.
TimR –
Great sound and a even better interface. Was a fun hook up. The interface walked me right through it. Enough power to run my current speakers
mediaseth –
I’ve been a 2 channel hi-fi enthusiast on a beer budget for years. Finally, I got the urge, and I’m using the 70s to power a B&W M1 center and two surrounds, while the left and right pre-outs are feeding a beefier Cambridge Audio 840a (integrated turned amp) for my B&W 603s3’s.
It’s easy to set up, though I found I had to download the Audyssey app to gain additional features over the built-in Audyssey software to make more specific adjustments. Even the eARC is working as it should — it’s a buggy feature on any home theatre receiver.
HEOS – I don’t use it much because I have a better streaming option and listen to music more often on another system – but I was impressed it found my NAS full of music automatically and if I must, I can stream spotify through it. I must have 50 ways to spotify by now through the same speakers, soo…
The FM tuner is just thrown in. It’s crap. I expected that anyway, and in my music room I have a vintage tuner that is 100x times better for what little radio is left worth listening to.
Ok — let’s get to surround, since that’s the only real justification for this product.
In short, I love it. It sounds great, but keep in mind a lot of content is going to a separate amplifier in my case. Others may want a more powerful amplifier or more efficient speakers. It took a while to dial in. Though the setup process is easy, I don’t find it 100% accurate to my room and my personal preferences. I did fight with Audyssey on putting too much in my center channel and rolling of highs (why I purchased the app,) but those of you with a bigger center channel may have appreciated that boost.
Channel separation seems excellent. I don’t detect any noise floor, either. It will reveal the flaws in any video sources that are lower budget or not mixed very well. I suggest doing your tests on Hollywood Blockbusters as a reference before almost jumping to the wrong conclusions about this AVR as I first did. It’s actually really good. It just isn’t a bargain. Not at all.
In fact, I think it’s an $800 product, at best. That’s why it’s getting 4 out of 5 stars. For $1200, I expect a name-brand DAC, a full featured Audyssey app, a beefier power supply and more refinement. Unfortunately, there’s a price gap in acceptable products and I needed a slim model — this was the one.
