This ice machine didn’t last more then two years .. keeps running into a defrosting issue and won’t make ice … support was no help and the videos I did find on cleaning on YouTube didn’t work .. very disappointing for a $600 machine

Bought this unit a month ago. Read tons of reviews on many different units. I decided to spend the extra money and splurge on Opal 2.0 with side tank. When I read other reviews, it was hard to understand if the problems folks were having was because they didn’t clean the unit per GE recommendations or what but this unit has been great so far.
I do recommend purchasing the water filter. It doesn’t come with one which is ridiculous for $600 Ice machine not to get a $20 water filter, c’mon GE you have to be better than that. Charge me $20 more to have it included. SMH.
Rant over, I do recommend spending the $20 instead of using their little screen filter.
Also, the one change I made instead of using filtered water from the fridge or tap water was I purchase distilled water for the unit. I read other reviews, and some recommended it so I thought I would try it. It’s a pain to get the jugs of distilled water but in the long run I think it is better for the unit and for the best tasting ice you will have. If you don’t purchase the optional water filter, I feel distilled water is a must. That little screen filter they give you is a joke.
Per other reviews I did purchase the 4yr Best Buy warranty just in case this unit. Never owning one before I thought it was wise to listen to others and purchase it. What is another $80 when you are spending what you are spending for this unit.
This is addicting, I drink more water and just love crunching on the ice.

We had to return and replace the first one we purchased because it had a high pitched squeak as soon as it started making ice, starting the day we bought it. Here we are with the replacement one, less than 7 months later, it’s stopped making ice all together.

I really like my opal 2.0. I use this daily. Hardest part was cleaning the unit. I have heard of others running into problems but i haven’t had any issues. I refill my unit with water from my brita water jug. Works great.

The product is awesome and lasted about 2.5 years. It stopped making ice at 2.5 years. I bought the insurance (4 Years) and BB was nice enough to provide me a new one on the spot.
The new unit however did not fill up the tank on its own after I followed the set up instructions. I had to take this heavy unit down back to BB.
They then tell me that don’t have any in stock and I need to wait 2 weeks.
2 weeks without an ice machine.

Hands down the best nugget ice maker. Bought mine in 2020 and it is working better than ever! Have never had a problem with it I love that I have wonderful pebble ice whenever I need it. And it is aesthetically pleasing in my kitchen. If you’ve been wanting one, buy it! You won’t regret it!

Been working great for over 4 weeks! It’s a little work cleaning it every week and descaling it every other week or 2 but worth the hassle. The ice it makes is great and I figure eventually this will pay for itself since the wife won’t be buying Sonic ice any longer. Sorry Sonic. I hope you survive. 🙂

I purchased this ice maker because we always had issues running out of ice. We are a family of four and use a lot of ice with our drinks and the ice maker in the fridge could never keep up. My wife had seen the Tik Tok videos and had mentioned she wanted one so I broke down and bought one without doing any research, wish I had looked into it better.
The good: it makes ice fast, it takes about 15 minutes to make a full bin.
It makes nugget ice, which my wife and the kids like
It looks pretty good on the counter
The bad: it has to be cleaned quite often, usually in my house about every two and a half weeks.
Cleaning it involves leaving the machine with vinegar for 18 hours, which means you spend a day and a half without being able to use it.
GE states that depending on where you live cleaning has to be done about every two weeks to once a month.
The ice bin is not refrigerated so at night when not in use ice melts which means when you wake up in the morning about a third of the ice has melted.
Cleaning involves using a bit more than a half a gallon of vinegar and lots of water to rinse out, this thing can get expensive to clean.
Overall if I had to do it again I would do more research. I can’t believe all the ice nuggets maker in the market have such a tedious cleaning process. I have also seen other brands which are much cheaper so I’m not sure the difference but this machine is not cheap and neither is the upkeep. Before you buy this thing make sure you are ok with the cleaning process.

This is a must have for any home. Yes, the price is higher, but so worth it!! We have a Samsung refrigerator which we all know the issues with the ice maker. Our GE Profile Opal 2.0 38lb. – Portable Ice maker with Nugget Ice Production, Side Tank and built in Wi-fi Stainless Steel allows us to have plenty of ice and enough when we have guest over. I don’t know how I lived without this for so long.

This ice maker has been a game changer in our household. It has been making ice on a schedule for us when we get home from work and need a nice ice soda or water. It does auto self clean which has been helpful but we also would clean it once a week after use. It makes ice up to 10 plus cups. Easy to use.

Ice maker will make a horrid squealing sound throughout the making process. We have followed the protocol for cleaning, descaling and more and it continues to perform with issues. While the ice it makes is nice, and the unit looks nice, the level of maintenance and care required in addition to the fact it continues to have problems is causing regret for this purchase. And we are beginning to experience shared issues with customer service, which is frustrating. Hoping the manufacturer steps up and replaces or refunds us for the defective unit. There is no reasonable explanation for the issues we are having. By reading the reviews on GE’s website, it is clear this is a known issue and I don’t see any evidence they are willing to accept responsibility. Fingers crossed. But I do not recommend this unit. Buyers beware.
