The most important piece of information concerning this washing machine was misquoted, by the vendor specifications, at the store where I bought this unit. A 2.1 cubic foot washer is the best compact available, and of course is unavailable so, given no other option for something that could fill enough to properly wash a Queen comforter, I purchased the new, GE 2.8 cubit Foot top loading washing machine, thinking it was the next innovation. I assumed, based on specs, that the washer was slightly taller, with a slightly deeper basket, resulting in a 2.8 instead of a 2.1 cubic foot load capacity, as widening the machine would be madness.
Given that the width of door frames in the average bathroom in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s built apartments, condos and houses was between 24 and 28 inches with the 24 inch door size in very common use, more common than the other two options, it would make no sense to produce a compact or portable machine that had a width precluding use. This unit is 24 inches by 24. 5 inches, with no wiggle room. Even with the door to our bathrooms off their hinges, this machine would never fit in any of them, so back in the box and back to the store this went.
The specifications have been updated, where I purchased this, again, 24 x 24.5, and hopefully the same thing won’t happen to anyone else, however, for anyone looking at this machine, please be advised that it is too large to fit through any bathroom door in our house, built in the 1970s and, after measuring at a friend’s 1960s home we found their doors also measured exactly 24 inches, with about 23.3 between the door frame stops on either side.
Given that a 23 inch machine is the maximum that can fit through what was, for decades, the standard bathroom door size, this machine is simply not workable unless you are using it in a large, standard size washing machine slot in a garage or laundry closet and, if you can fit a 24 inch machine with a low 2.8 cubic foot capacity, you can probably fit a standard 27 inch machine, why bother with a machine that washes so much less and doesn’t fill enough to wash a large comforter? It just makes no sense.
I can’t recommend this for anyone seeking a compact washer, as a 23 inch width is about as wide as it could be in order to be considered compact, for use in a bathroom with a sink hookup. I also don’t recommend this for anyone seeking a washing machine who can accommodate a larger size washer, such as a 27 inch, because the capacity on the 27 inch GE washer far exceeds this and that washer comes with a functioning Deep Fill button, as of 2019. With any luck, someone will design a 2.5 or even a 2.8 cubic foot washer that utilizes a slightly taller tub in a thinner housing of 22 to a maximum of 23 inches, so that I can finally replace my dead Haier 2.1, which was so useful for so many years.
I hope this helps you in your search.

This machine looks nice. Large for an apartment washer, but super loud! Have to return it.

Great machine and more than what expected. Only 4 stars because it retains water in the hoses after using and can make a mess if not placed on a bucket which is kind of an eyesore. Should make these with storage mechanisms for the plug and hoses

It was a very good choice when I decided to buy the GE – 2.8 Cu. Ft. 8-Cycle Top-Loading Portable Washer, for the relatively big size, very efficient machine, you only have to connect it to the water, drain and power supply, put your laundry and the soap in and start the auto process.

Any large purchase can be scary, especially when the item isn’t carried in the store.
I knew that it was time to upgrade from my 1.0 Cu. Ft. washing machine and kiss the Laundromat goodbye (for all the items that I couldn’t fit in my older tiny portable).
I live in a small (up two flights of stairs) apartment, with no space or hookups for a washer or dryer. For years I hauled laundry up and down stairs to the laundromat. I thought about purchasing a portable washer and dryer, but was always a bit leery of the “portable thing”. Honestly, the idea of micro loads of laundry, and the worry of overloading the machine or grappling multiple intake and dranage hoses seemed worse (if that’s possible!) than the weekly pilgrimage, up and down the stairs to the laundromat.
Exhausted, I purchased my first portable washer and dryer about three years ago…and yes, there were lots of micro loads, plenty of wrestling matches with hoses, a flood (forgot to stink the drain hose in the sink!) and I still ended up taking most jeans, heavy sweaters and sheets to the laundromat. That said, having the ability to do even small loads was a huge advantage. Having portable units, even small ones, cut my trips to the laundromat from once a week to once a month!
I had purchased my small units used, as I wanted to see the pros and cons, while taking a small financial risk (more money for less cubit footage). I know felt confident that it would be worth the investment to purchase a new washer and dryer. I was excited to find the GE- 2.8 Cu. Ft washer but as concerned by the one star review on the Best Buy site, and lack of reviews (at the time, on other sites). I couldn’t seem to find reviews that talked about the quality or ease of use of this machine.
**I have used this washer (and it’s companion dryer, GE- Spacemaker 3.6 Cu. Ft. Electric Dryer) for two months. NO MORE MICRO LOADS! NO MORE LAUNDROMAT…AND NO MORE CRAZY HOSES!
The Ge- 2.8 Cu. Ft. 8-Cycle Top-Loading Portable Washer – White/Black, is the real deal. I don’t have to sensor my wash, I can wash pretty much wash anything (besides pillows and rugs). It loads like any other top loader and besides hooking it up to the sink, it feel like a traditional washer. I love doing laundry again!
I love this washer, but a few things you may find as a challenge:
-Size: Check that it will work for your space. He’s a big boy!
-Cycle Times- Some of the load selections take an hour or more. The quick cycle is aprox 35min.
-Control Panel: It sounds weird but the cycle selection takes a bit of study. Ex. If you want to use fabric softener you have to select “Deep Rinse”. It just lacks a bit of intuitive design.
-Set Up: Hoses for portable set up is not listed prominently. A metal safety pan needs to be screwed to the underneath of the machine, it’s a bit of a pain.(If they offer free set up, get it)

It takes patience to get this washer to function without leaking,
once you get it down, it’s fabulous!

I love this washing machine. It is much more expensive than most other competitors in this category (portable washers), but after researching the cheaper models, I saw why they were cheaper – because they were garbage products. For me, this model was worth the extra money because I didn’t want to take the chance and have the irritation of dealing with a piece of garbage product.

Great buy, should have bought it sooner. Does a fantastic job of getting my clothes clean. It comes with everything you need to set it up as a portable machine. Very easy to set up and the instructions are easy to follow.

Wished I would have made this purchase a LOT sooner!! I recommend the GE portable washer even though it is a little more expensive than some other models available on the market. I like the features that the GE portable washer offers. I was pleasantly surprised that the larger capacity basket holds ample loads as advertised. The washer runs quietly which was a concern since we live on the 2nd level in our building. We had hesitated previously of making this purchase for this fact but do not worry. We have not experienced any complaints from our neighbors which complain about any noise issues. The washer is compact for apartment living and easy to maneuver. I really like the stability of the faucet connector. Tried another unit that was less expensive but did not like the quality nor the performance of the product. We returned that model and ordered the GE for a couple hundred dollars more hoping this model would work out. Best Buy doorstep delivery was more than satisfactory!! Really appreciated the communication level that Best Buy reps provided to schedule the delivery. The delivery was even received earlier than original scheduled. Shout out to all of the AWESOME customer service provided, they truly deserve it!! I can only recommend that you purchase this machine if you are shopping portable washers. It is well worth the extra money. The most exciting part is that there are NO MORE TRIPS to the community laundry which is really important, especially during corona virus concerns. This prompted our decision to finally make the purchase due to a family member has a compromised immune system. Glad we took that leap of faith!! Thank you GE for a wonderful product and to BEST BUY for a great job!!

Excellent machine for a condo or small space. So happy I bought this.
Korpek –
I do not recommend buying in the best buy of this washing machine I bought I unpacked the top door scratched and unwashed casing on the side cracked I will not give up because I live in a apartment and again it would be difficult to bear downstairs and take it to the store I do not recommend shopping there
coolpurchases –
much bigger than expected-washes quietly-only thing was took longer to arrive-the guys installing it didn’t even have their own screwdriver-plus they hooked up the water line wrong-I had to hook it up to the cold line myself for it to work but am still extremely happy with my purchase

Good for a small apartment. I can’t do a cycle on normal wash because it doesn’t give enough water not even halfway. I do not fill up the machine with lots of clothes and still the water doesn’t fill up on a normal cycle. For a normal wash I always have to wash it on “casual” cycle for more water. It’s also loud. You can’t see if it’s really washing your clothes.
sjw99 –
So far, very pleased! I had a front-loader which was awful–noisy, long cycles, _terrible_ vibrations on spin. This is the opposite–quiet, hardly any vibration, and the normal cycle is 38 min instead of 57 min.! I have limited choices because of the size of my laundry closet in my small house (no basement). This is PERFECT. The tub is 2.8 cf as opposed to the last one which was only 2.2. The genius thing that you can’t see in the photos, is the black lid actually folds up in HALF when it opens (only needs about 8-9″ clearance), which means I can still have upper shelf space in the closet, LOVE that!

This newer model is so much better then the one I had, only downfall is that there are NO front wheels, it takes me and one of my kid’s to move it to and from the sink to the place I store it when not in use
Washer –
I wouldn’t know.
It was never installed by your contractor ‘s employees.

We love its. This washer machine wash clothes good.

I use this in my kitchen and roll it up to the sink and attach it to the faucet. Some people’s complaints sounded like they used it by sticking the drain hose in a utility sink. That’s different than what I’m writing about here.
Answers to negative reviews that scared me when I was looking at this washer:
1. With the hose/unicouple hooked up to the faucet, no water runs down the hoses. If it does, either your adapter or unicouple aren’t tight enough. It did spray a little, so I took somebody’s suggestion and attached a non-cotton sock (cotton would never dry) with the toe cut out, to the unicouple. See photo. But the hoses do hold water. You need to shake them out really well before storing away.
2. I took the hose reel off my old portable and put it on this one. See 2nd photo. But that doesn’t really work b/c of the way the hoses are arranged. So I don’t use it. It would make a mess w/the wet sock on it. I just tuck the hose into the washer as intended.
3. It’s easy to move (and I’m old. LOL). I saw some photos here that might explain why you have trouble moving it. TAKE the 4 white things OFF the big metal bottom plate of the washer before you stand it up. They’re not meant to stay on. The washer does have 4 wheels. From what I had read here, I wasn’t sure.
4. When I use any setting that usually uses softener, whether or not I use softener, the softener cup ends up full of water and needs to be taken out and dumped. Weird. So I just use “Normal” for most loads.
5. I saw somebody say that “Normal” doesn’t use enough water. This is a high efficiency machine. It uses less water by design. I think that’s why it sounds so weird, too. We’re not used to high efficiency.
6. Oddly, the timer seems to be really inaccurate. I try to set a louder timer, since I’m usually not in the room, so I know when it’s done. But it’s never done when my timer goes off. Sometimes it’s way off. I wondered if it timed each step of the cycle, but I don’t think that’s it either. I just gave up trying to know when it will be done.
7. I’m 5′ tall. I can JUST barely reach in and get the small things off the floor of the washer. To really wipe down the inside, I have to stand on something.

just wondering if anyone has put this washer and dryer in a 5th wheel camper
Meli –
I have a narrow entryway so my options were limited.
It’s compact but has a good size drum. It can fit a nice size load of not so heavy items. Just note that it does not wash well if you add a full load or heavier items.
I use the extra spin quite often as it doesn’t do well with medium-large loads.
The lid is made of cheap plastic and feels flimsy.
If needed, this can be hooked up to a kitchen sink and comes with the attachment.
If you need to set up normally, you would need to purchase the hoses separately.

I am sooo bummed, I saved up for this for a long time and I am very disappointed. I really hope I can return it. The size is great, full size and that is why I bought it. But it doesn’t work well. In fact, it is faulty. It says there 29 minutes for delicates, but then spends 12 minutes on pause, with no time changing on display. Like it is frozen. I’ve tried 4 loads and 2 of them were problematic. Like the clothes didn’t get clean at all. There is a place for hot water hose but says over and over that you can’t use hot water, only use cold water hose provided. The wheels don’t work that well for easy mobility. Like I said, very very disappointed.

Good washer, but was too damaged in transit to be used.
JAckie –
Delivery was awful didn’t show how to hook up didn’t show how to pull the wheels down hook hose to wrong outlet hook wrong tube to drain just didn’t know what they was doing
DrHoo1 –
Good news: Washer is the high efficiency type and uses a lot less water than the regular machines. It is not very noisy and it does a very good job at cleaning clothes.
Not good news: Very pricey for what you get.
Best Buy brought it and installed it. Apparently installing washing machines is new to them or at least this model. They stuck the discharge hose about 3 feet down the drain (should be 5″) and we had water all over the floor as a result. They failed to attach the small angled support that holds the hose in the top of the drain area. We purchased this washer and the related dryer and rack. Similar installation issues with the dryer and rack.

I’m still learning about all the options this machine has to offer. It’s been great so far except, I’m not sure how to get it to use up the fabric softener in the dispenser during the short wash cycle. I’d appreciate any tips cause the manual doesn’t address this at all. The price point is on the higher end but it’s def worth buying.

Very solid machine that gets the job done. Small and convenient.
Tonfla –
It works finefor a compact machine. The controls are easy to use and it looks like strong.
JoelB –
I can only give the washer one star, nor can I recommend it, because we have not been able to use it. It was an open box item, but once we had it home, it was missing the hose clamp…and when we called to order it, the delivery was delayed and GE sent the wrong hose clamp (twice now).

Mine is only 3 years old and it broke down twice already. No enough water during wash cycle. Too expensive for 3yrs lifespan. Think twice before buying.

I’m happy with my purchase but i don’t like the Best Buy customer service.
