DJR5280 –
I recently purchased the Bowers and Wilkins Formation Wedge. I was super excited to try this speaker and the brands new ” Formation ” line.
Upon setup you need to download the Bowers and Wilkins mobile app and pair your product with the app. This was very complicated and required me using online help to get the Wedge paired. I’m using an LG V30. Apparently You have to turn on location on your mobile phone. No idea why but you do. After a few weeks I noticed the app wouldn’t recognize the speaker. This happened more than it didn’t. To pair a phone or product you have to utilize the app. Needless step for bluetooth connections in my opinion.
Sound- probably the biggest reason people will buy this product is sound. The sound is nothing to really write home about. The sound ia basically all highs and lows. No mids. It sounds especially bright using bluetooth and Tidal. In fact using bluetooth it doesn’t sound all that great period, no where near $900 level. Using Airplay is where things get better. Using I tunes I could EQ it and get some more midrange out of this thing. The soundstage is decent but nothing special for a single speaker. It goes decently loud but again, nothing over the top for a single speaker setup. The bass is quite good and I have to say I was impressed with the bass. Clarity and vocals were also great though on some songs this unit lacked impact.
In conclusion I wouldn’t recommend this speaker. At $900 it’s way over priced for what it is. The sound quality and form factor are the most important factors in this category and at $900 it’s just not worth it. You can get similar Sound quality from units costing half this price.

The sound is impressive like a concert is happening in my living room. I get a lot of compliments from my guests on how good the music sounds.

I have embraced the B&W Formation lineup for its all-in-one simplicity and sound quality. And I would say so far it’s a seamless experience.
Having a Formation Duo + Bass in my living room, 2 Formation wedge in my kitchen and bedroom, I was able to use the B&W app to play audio in PERFECT SYNC. The app allows individual volume setting, and also a overall volume which change the individual volume relative to its current level. It’s intuitive and works great.
The downside of this closed ecosystem is I can only get the synchronization via the app. Using groups in Roon, there is a delay and obviously not the way B&W intended. As a result, when I use full house sync in the app, Room still thinks that the speaker that initiated the playback is the only one active. A bit of a disconnect, but something I can live with.
In terms of sound quality, it does it’s job, very well. I found the bass to be too much for my taste, overpowering the mid and high, so I dialed it down by 2 ticks in the app and I’m happy with the sound.
The sound is full bodied and with good details, instrument separation and sound stage is nowhere near the Formation Duo (obviously); the same is true with the marketed stereo tweeters, the sound I hear
still sounds like it came from a single location rather than 2 distinct channels. But with all that said, all Bluetooth speakers in the same category share the same property, I’m really happy with what I’m hearing in terms of tonality, details and transparency, enough for me to recommend this speaker.
The price on these units are very high, but for me I went with the ecosystem and wanted to have to cohesive experience from 1 brand rather than many. I was debating whether to get 2 or 3 sonos 1s or even bluesound speakers now BB carries them, but after experiencing the seamless playback experience and quantity of the sound, I probably won’t bother. B&W kind of did an Apple over here, and I am satisfied with the level of quality (sound and build) and simplicity that it offered to my audio experience.

Very pleased with this. Yes. It’s expensive. But it is audiophile quality. Jazz. Rock. Classical. EDM. All sound clear, full, and “live.” I

This is an absolutely awesome sound system that blows away anything from Sonos or Bose. Whether you are listening to the TV or just high fidelity audio, this system does it all. It’s easy to set up, sounds great, modular so you can add additional components and has a very cool and unique design.

First off the audio quality is fantastic on this piece and that is its saving grace, where this unit fails is in its setup / implementation / use.
1. Setup – if you have a more modern WiFi implementation in your home utilizing a mesh topology, you are walking into a world of despair with attempting to setup this device. The cheap WiFi implementation in this device is shocking given its astounding price tag. This device will ONLY connect to a 2.4GHz endpoint. If you have a shared SSID with all of your home devices, both 2.4GHz and 5GHz this device will refuse to connect. After much troubleshooting and actually taking the first Formation Wedge back because I thought the device was broken I made this realization. Fortunately for me I was able to deploy a standalone 2.4GHz network with a single device on it to make it function. Of all of the IoT devices I have deployed throughout the house, the single most expensive IoT device in the house (nests, roombas, ecovacs, you name it), has the WORST internet connectivity implementation.
2. Bluetooth – The Formation Wedge is a gorgeous product. Its a statement piece, the placement for mine is in my dining room on a console table. So naturally with it so prominently displayed people want to interact with it when we have guests. That is where the hassle begins. Did B&W walk through the product story of enabling Bluetooth for mobile device connectivity? You have to have the Formation app, be on the discreet WiFi Ap (see point above), and then in the app you can enable pairing. What a pain. Why can’t we just hold down the Formation Button for 3s or something simple to put the device in pairing mode? Is that too much to ask? I have seriously considered simply replacing the Wedge with a significantly cheaper but still robust Bar style speaker that has figured out how to implement Bluetooth for those spur of the moment Spotify needs.
3. Latency – When you are able to overcome the top two, you are hit with the Latency issues. Admittedly I’m not using the device in a whole home audio setup, I don’t have other Formation products in the house, I wanted a visual focal speaker and this one wins hands down. But when I am using the device with weapons in its arsenal I want it to be effective. The Wedge is setup via Spotify Connect on the family plan. When cooking / eating dinner and I want to listen to music its a frustrating game of “is this going to work?”. Connecting to the Wedge via Spotify and then counting the seconds to see if audio will begin playing. Once its playing, try changing the volume either via Spotify or your mobile device, again its a frustrating game of latency. Volume Up, one one thousand, two one thousand, etc.
I really want to love this device, again its saving grace is its audio. I even went as far as attempt to hook up a cheap Amazon Echo to the 3.5in in-line audio port on the Wedge, which turns out isn’t enabled or functional, thus dashing those dreams of overcoming the bluetooth connectivity and latency issues outlined above.
I’m really at a loss on what to do at this point.

This speaker will not pair in the same room as the bass/flex/bar combo making it useless for the formation surround sound set up. If you buying this speaker to set up independently in a room it will rock it. BEAUTIFUL mids and crisp bass. If you’re upgrading from a zepplin air – it is a BIG upgrade you’ll be happy with.

I’ve owned Sonos, HEOS and tried Bluesound. After extensive online research, I’ve decided to switch to Formation line and Wedge is my first entry. The sound quality is awesome and exactly what I’ve been looking for. Crystal clear sound with good audio separation. Bass is decent but not exaggerated. One of main competition for this premium price range with high reputation is Naim Muso series which supposedly has better bass. But clear sound is more important factor for me and in this regards reviews say Wedge has its edge. Also, Formation line has Duo or Flex to give true stereo separation if I ever decide in such need. Or if somehow I need more Bass I can always get Formation Bass.
The reason Formation line as a whole has not received the best review is due to its app. Setup is super easy and fast but you can’t do much. In fact as of today you can’t even play music from the app. For HiRes audio on Apple device we need Roon as Airplay 2 only capable of CD quality. Currently, there is no Alexa or Google Assistant support. Other than GA, B&W promised to change these in near future but they should have done it from the start to get better reputation. I can only imagine they’d have received top notch scores and awards from many review sites otherwise.
Also lack of wired input may appear disadvantage to some. Technically speaking, Wedge has Airplay 2 and Bluetooth Apx HD so these two types of wireless connection allows you to play/connect pretty much anything from most recent electronics. One may wish Chromecast support so it would have made this full wireless connectivity. Regardless, If one absolutely need Wired connection like Aux input, one can purchase formation Audio. The claimed latency is merely 40 ms (according to B&W rep) which is far better than Direct connection Sonos Play 5, HEOS bar, Sonos playbar or Bluesound.
So overall, if you are looking for the best sound quality in multiroom wireless speaker platform, this is it. But if you can wait, perhaps wait until updated app release in second quarter may be the best unless you already have or plan to subscribe Roon otherwise you won’t get the best performance from this.

costly but sound is unreal I purchased one more…

The product was fantastic. I love the sound the speaker gives out

I have owned B & W speakers for years now. I started with 600 series bookshelf, then purchased 802 D’s “EXCEPTIONAL”! Later I bought the Panorama soundbar for my TV and downsized to a zeppelin mini, then upgraded to an A-7. The A-7 is FANTASTIC! The only reason I purchased the wedge is I am an android user now and A-7 is more convenient with Apple devices. The Wedge is wonderful and easy to use, can do the Alexa thing and sound quality is crisp, clear, and amazing. I will warn you though the bass is much tighter than the A-7, but the app comes with an EQ, so just set preferences.

So I bought this to replace my Definitive Technologies Bluetooth speaker that just stopped working. When I got it I set it up and was very impressed with this speaker. It really filled the whole main floor of our house and sounded amazing. I started to have some issues with the app and the speaker linking to the internet and to my phone. I did a reset on the speaker and I deleted the app so I could start from scratch and reprogram everything. When I went to the App Store the app was no longer available. I continued to check for the app for several days and found out from B&W that they were having issue with the app and pulled it off to fix it. I didn’t pay that much for a speaker that I can’t use so back to the store it went. Good luck with this app.

I love the sound from this speaker. Had a minor issue getting the app installed but once you get the app running it works like a charm. Highly recommended!

I chose these over the Formation Bass Dual Subwoofer because I wanted a Subwoofer with Stereo sound, which these are. They also happen to be the successors to the wildly popular B&W Zeppelin
Ooahman –
I had a warranty issue with his unit. Had to send back for repair during Covid…So it took way longer than it should have.
They had to replace the CPU board.
Sound is good, get the Sub , very good sound
SGA1 –
A bit expensive, but great sound. Easy to connect to Bluetooth on TVs, and control via Spotify or Airplay. Yes the B & W app is kind of meh, but not a barrier at all. Happy with it.
DSOTM –
I’ve been using the speaker for about 6 months and unsure if it is the speaker or the Apple AirPlay 2, but the combination of both is just plain bad. I have Tidal on my main Stereo System and I never have any issues. The sound is Ok (maybe 3.5 stars) but not worth the trouble. Look for another solution.

Excellent sound and design! Definitely worth the money!
skrill –
Simply one of the best speakers right now on the market. The hefty price tag is 1000% worth it. If I could afford to buy 3 more for my apartment and sync them all at once I would.
Brian –
I’m very happy with the Wedge. Setup was straightforward, including connecting to my home network and playing music through Spotify. The sound is excellent, with a wide soundstage and good presence. I own a pair of B&W 804S speakers, and in some ways I like the sound of the Wedge better, especially at low volumes.
The build quality is great, and I like the funky shape. There isn’t much I would improve. One would be to have more physical controls on the speaker, including an on/off switch and quick mute button. Another would be to add an audio input option.
For the money (I bought it when the price was discounted 20%), the Wedge is a perfect choice if you want high-quality streaming sound without large speakers and components.

I love my Bowers and Wilkins speakers . It packs a lot of fantastic bass for my reggae music.
BruceLee –
The sound it produces is so clearly perfect. I actually returned it because I need more bass and a larger setup is the only way around it, but this speaker is still the best it gets for its size in terms of quality & performance.
Abby –
Very classy and Excellent speakers! The sound effect is beyond my expectations. Gifted this to a friend and he loves it so much!
ktown –
Keeps well to BW’s reputation of quality, both in build and in sound. No regrets. No disappointments.
Wowzers –
Sounds is immaculate. App is horrendous, bluetooth features won’t connect to my TV.
Reset/ reformat / reconnected and it won’t pair.
For the price. Its just as good as me returning it.
Do not recommend.
Broken –
I had to order it by mail. Once it arrived, It didn’t work. Something was wrong with it. Very disappointed. & you never have it in stock at the store so i am nervous to mail order it again from you.
HOTAS1982 –
I like the fact that the form factor fits in a small living room. One critique that I have is really around the fact that it is app dependent.
If there is a suggestion for improvement, have a bit more open architecture so, it can be more “future-proof”

Sounds great! You can’t go wrong with this Bad Boy!

Great sound. A bit pricey new, but open box price is a very good value.

Bowers & Wilkins quality and wow! What sound! Great bass
1080p –
State-of-the-art wireless powered speaker. Tonality significantly improved from the Zeppelin. Setup & Use spread across two apps; a bit clunky. Multi-room, but no stereo support. Distinctive design. Part of a family of wireless speakers.
Robmc –
Compact Size, but the sound rivals full home stereo equipment. Bowers and Wilkins are used as reference speakers and now I know why
User –
Beautiful sound, horrible, horrible connectivity. Loses connection all the time. Can only connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi which is a hell lot of work to get working with modern routers, many don’t even support that frequency anymore. It’s never as simple ad connecting to Bluetooth and start listening. It’s always something not working properly that needs 30 minutes to fix
ninja –
the overall sound is full with timbre treble and bass but for such 8 times the google hub there is no voice command like alexa or google for your next song is surely a miss. the app is weak not very helpful. no on off button or next song is surely a bad point, plus it is can not mix or match to the other brand of speaker , it is limit with b&w speaker like sonos ecosysytem. just for the sound is great but need to be more catch up to the modern world in voice command and need som input , output for auxillary for grow to preamp , turn table or receiver
Ameya –
This thing is a beauty. Sounds extraordinary and looks classy.

The Wedge sounds very good and it looks really nice also .I have other Formation speakers that it works great with the
B&W mesh system that I can play the same music in other room’s .

I love Love LOVE the sound of this speaker! I am a professional violinist and I actually planned on performing with this, using it for my back-up tracks. Well I got to an exclusive in-home performance venue (a day ahead, thank God!) and the house didn’t have 2.4G Wi-Fi, only 5G. The speaker just sat there like a brick. A gorgeous brick, but a $1000.00 brick nonetheless. No way to connect it with my iPad. Without the lesser Wi-Fi connection, it wouldn’t even pair via Bluetooth. This is completely unacceptable. IMHO this speaker is already obsolete. I will be returning it.

My first Bowers and Wilkins unit and I lobe it. The sound is clean and the creation of this unit is amazing.

With this small but mighty speaker barking out the Foo Fighters, I thought I would share a quick review for those considering it. Purchased from a local Best Buy in December, the speaker was relatively easy to set up, with minimal head-scratching as the instructions are basic at best. The speaker is gorgeous…gorgeous enough to convince my design loving GF that it was the right choice. Sound is deep (great bass for such a small primary speaker) and high tones are excellent. It very easily fills sound in the entirety of the main level of my house (1200 sq feet for the level it is located). The sounds is rich, deep, clear and delicate as needed. Really impressed with the speaker overall. Sound in all music genres I’ve listened to has been very good to excellent.
Now as for the short-comings. As mentioned by other reviewers, the mid’s could be better and can sounds slightly weak compared to the high’s and bass. Thankfully the speaker’s app has a good adjustment for each so as to balance the sound as needed. The biggest issue I have is the inability to use dedicated music apps that can then play nicely with other apps in use. What I mean is that I almost solely use Apple Music, and playback will stop entirely when I then use my phone to look / open anything that has sound. So, no Facebook / Insta / Flipboard / YouTube etc if you are also streaming music directly from your phone – which is all I do. Each time a song is interrupted, which can occur just by scrolling on your phone and forgetting to turn off the phone’s sound (and sometimes not even then), you then have to go back to Apple Music and manually turn the song back on…it will not automatically start back up. It can be laborious. Just today I’d guess it’s happened a half dozen times.
So, in short – it’s an excellent speaker, looks fantastic, fills up a small to average sound space with ease, and my only issues are the slightly weak mid’s and the very antiquated connectivity for music apps.

Worth every penny. the detail of the sound is amazing.

My wedge worked fine for a year and then it developed a popping noise. I sent it back under warranty and after almost 6 months I got it back. B&W customer service sucks! Then you could hear static in the background when playing a soft song. Now the popping noise is back! No music just constant popping. It will probably cost me $75 to send it back and I’m not real confident that this popping noise will not come back. Plus I bet it will be a couple hundred dollars to fix it. Not sure it’s worth it!

Nice quality sound and very user friendly I recommend it

Aazing sound! However, outdated hardware, i would wait for a new relase if the speaker if i had to purchase agan. Originally purchased two years ago.
