Webroot’s Web Threat Shield is an additonal defense against cybercrime, it protects you while browsing the internet. It warns you about unsafe websites before you click, and automatically blocks bad ones that are trying to install viruses and malware on your computer. It does this through up-to-the-minute data about website reputations and provides real-time protection from high risk phishing sites. It also helps protect you from threats by showing a warning message.
Web Threat Shield along with Webroot’s cloud intelligence is great at isolating you from internet sites that contain malware payloads. The protections is real-time. You will find installation and setup easy. I have had no security issues since I started using it.

I normally don’t like to have virus protection installed on my computers because in the past they were very resource heavy and would slow down my browsing experience. Virus protection has come a long way and Webroot Security for Chromebook is an excellent example of it. It was very easy to download and install from the google play store. You install the app and just put in your email and key. It starts up along with chrome OS when you boot up and has not slowed down my chromebook boot up or browsing experience. It is so lightweight and un-intrusive that i sometimes forget that it is even running in the background at all times. I have a macbook and a chrome book, and I let my family and kiddos use my chromebook when they want to browse the web or watch some online videos. I trust Webroot Security to keep my chromebook free of virus or malware. One thing that I really like about it is that it has a built in web browser, if you want to take an extra measure to keep your chromebook secure. That is pretty awesome. Sometimes the kiddos or grandparents will click a sketchy advertisement or web link , So its nice to have the built in web browser for added security! All in All, I would recommend Webroot to you if you share your chromebook with younger family members, or even the elders! We all know they are prone to accidentally stumble onto sketchy untrustworthy webpages.
Pros : Easy to install
Lightweight- doesn’t slow down Chrome OS
Always runs in the background
Built in Web browser
One simple pre paid price!
Cons; None

So the last few days I have been struggling to understand why such a product like Webroot Security for Chromebook would be made. The Chromebook’s inherent operating system is designed to be secure with built-in virus protection and thus safe from viruses, with automatic updates to prevent malfeasance from taking control of your life. ChromeOS also uses sandboxing and has a security chip and verifies boot loader each time you turn it on, so with all that in mind, the concept of security software for ChromeOS took a bit of getting used to.
Downloading the webroot software is rather easy as it installs through the Google Play store (which technically checks the apps in the play store to be free of malware). Upon signing up with your registration key, the app is denoted by a simple ‘webroot’ icon in your apps cabinet. Launching the app would bring up a “secured” chrome-based web browser. The app is supposed to scan your device at this time, or one may manually initiate a scan. This is the only place where one can scan your operating system upon launching the webroot browser. There are no configuration settings or options, just a single button scan that runs for a few seconds. I have to be honest, I have no idea what it is scanning, this is not like the traditional webroot antivirus or any other antivirus software.
Probably the part that intrigued me is that upon the first install, the software asks you to download a Chrome browser extension called “Webroot Threat Shield”, which is registered and activated with the same serial code you used to buy the security software. This software is more useful than what comes with the barebones secured webroot browser. The “threat shield” software is gotten from the chrome web store (it’s a browser extension) and this thing works. It took me a few minutes to realize that I was not seeing any ads once activated.
My usual web browsing sessions have ads associated with them. The webroot threat shield was blocking all of those ads. Comparing the same websites using the chrome browser with the webroot extension vs. the secured browser that comes with the webroot app, one finds that the extension blocks all the ads, while the so-called ‘secured browser’ does show the ads.
Chrome Browser and to an extent Chrome OS has had several zero-day flaws over the last few months. Having a browser extension that blocks bad actors goes a long way from securing your web experience. I also liked that when you do search on google chrome (with the extension enabled) it puts a green checkmark to good site links denoting it is okay to visit those sites. That feature is not unique to this software as many antivirus extensions also have that capability, but in this case, this is the only part that I found useful.
If you are thinking of adding a security suite to your chrome book, I cant completely think of a reason why you would need one, especially one that does not allow you to manually scan downloaded files or show you where it is scanning. However, if you are thinking of a browser extension that enhances your online browsing experience, then I can highly recommend the webroot threat shield extension that is activated with your security software license key.

Webroot Security for Chromebook offers two types of protection. It scans your Chromebook for malicious apps, and it offers a customized web browser for “secure” web browsing. As a subscriber of the software you can also download an extension for Chrome that scans websites for malicious intent as well.
Given the already secure nature of Chrome OS, the antivirus aspect of Webroot is not really one I would worry much about needing, especially as the Chromebook I was intending to use this for is one for my kids that has a curated family mode. The Chrome extension (or standalone Webroot browser) might be a nice feature if you are planning to use the Chromebook for a person who is not computer savvy and easily taken advantage of. Given the right sale price, Webroot would definitely be something I’d consider purchasing in that scenario.
Unfortunately, while not an advertised use case, I was hoping the Webroot would have some value for curated kid browsing. It doesn’t really do anything you can tweak for kid protection (not like my young children are browsing with a credit card and might end up on phishing sites).

I am using this software on my several year old HP Chromebook x360 with great success- I think. No threats have been found so far, and installation was a snap.
You download the software and enter your key, and an initial scan on your device is completed immediately. Future scans are done automatically, or, if you find a need to do so, you can scan manually at any time.
You are also given an opportunity to install the Webroot extension for chrome which also installs the software’s protection in the chrome browser. This is a nice feature, but with one drawback: if you install the extension on your chomebook, you are prompted the first time you use the chrome browser in any other device to enter your key, which is not going to be accepted unless you buy another license. To get rid of this nag, simply click on “Don’t show again” and the prompt will not come back. Since I use chrome on several computers and devices, the nag screen was an annoyance, albeit a temporary one.
Webroot also offers its own browser for maximum protection from risky websites. I used it some, but on sites where you have to log in, you’ll have to know your login and password, becuase this browser does not offer the to import that information from other browsers.
While using the Webroot browser, did notice a lack of those pesky ads that seem to pop up from nowhere in other browsers, and I certainly have no complaint about that.
Conall11 –
Pretty standard as far as protection goes. I’ve used this in the past and never had any issues. Installing is always easy and simple and takes no time at all. Once installed the rest takes care of itself. Have not experienced any lags or issues while the protection runs in the background. I would recommend this product.

I received the link from Webroot for the Chromebook Antivirus software and downloaded it. The download was easy and painless as was the installation. The keycode was provided and after entering it, this was probably one of the easiest software installs I’ve ever done.
To be honest, I didn’t think Chromebooks needed antivirus. I usually only use it when I’m lying-in bed and have some question in my head that needs to be answered so I can fall asleep. Now I have a Google Nest Hub so that answers about ¾ of my questions. But after seeing the Webroot software offered, I said to myself, yeah, every computer needs some protection. There’s got to be some malicious code for the Chromebook out in the wild.
After installing the software, it runs with ease in the background. Opening it up, it looks to run in a browser, I believe Webroot’s own secure browser. I just clicked it and it ran. It’s not like I have a ton of files on the Chromebook, but it’s nice to have it running while I’m ‘surfing the net’. I do wish this allowed for installation on more than one Chromebook as I have two that I use throughout the house.
I’d recommend it to Chromebook users for peace of mind.

As you can tell by my name, I love Bestbuy. Always bought my electronics here. So whenever it was time to get a new laptop or desktop I always picked up antivirus. From the early days yrs back I was told that webroot used less resources thus didn’t slow your pc down. And it works just as good as any others. Plus Bestbuy usually offers up to 6 months free. So even better. Save some money.
I just recently got my 8 year old daughter a nice chromebook and even though I know chromebooks are pretty safe I wanted an added level of security so webroot it is. And all I can say is that I’ve trusted this brand and it does what it’s supposed to do and protect my kids while downloading games or just browsing.
It’s simple to use and works well. You can never be to safe nowadays. Especially with so many people online and working remotely.

I have two Chromebooks- One Samsung and another Acer. I wanted this software on my Acer since I use that one daily for work and the Samsung is only used occasionally. When I downloaded Webroot, (even though I was on my Acer, it did not give me the option of using on the Acer, only the Samsung.
I contacted support and they were extremely fast and helpful in figuring out my issue and getting Webroot on the Chromebook I use for work!
You can have it do a scan but it runs constantly so that isn’t necessary. I like knowing that it is always in the background keeping my laptop safe!

I bought this as a gift for my husband to replace his Ipad as it isn’t supported by Apple for updates as it is too old. Will add more to my review once he starts using it after Christmas.

The installation was pretty seemless to my chromebook and I think is installed correctly. I tried to login but the password needed to be reset. Because of that my account has a timed lockout which is a bit annoying. To me the interface is confusing. I cannot locate the on demand scan function and I do not know if it is actually on. I assume it is.
RacineTechie –
Download and installation was very quick, the interface is much simpler and direct than I had been used to. With this sort of thing, you never know just how good it is until it isn’t, but so far so good and it isn’t a resource drain, so I am very pleased.
KYTwinsDad –
I am a long time lover of Webroot software. The simplicity of usage, easy set it and forget it & intuitive menus means that power users (such as myself) or even novice users (like most of my family) can easily use the software.
I haven’t had instances of where I was trying to do something on the Chromebook but couldn’t because the software was blocking it or not allowing it like k have with other vendors’ solutions. Which that is a huge plus for me. I want the protection but I want it to be intelligent enough to not block the power user functions I use on a daily basis.
If you’re in the market for a security solution then look no further than Webroot! You won’t be disappointed!

Although Chromebooks are typically protected, the Webroot Security for Chromebook provides an additional layer of protection.
It’s simple to install – simply visit the website, insert your Key Code, and download.
It runs quietly (and flawlessly) in the background to perform scans of your device and files without interrupting what you’re doing. In fact, you don’t even know it’s running!. It also allows you to run on-demand scans by simply clicking a button.
It successfully identifies and blocks dangerous websites allowing you to browse safely. Also blocks websites that try to steal your personal information, helping protect your identity.
For less than $25/year, is it really worth the risk of not safe-guarding your Chromebook?
Go ahead – get it!

Seems fine. I don’t think I’ve been infected, yet…

REVIEW: WEBROOT – SECURITY FOR CHROMEBOOK ANTIVIRUS (1 DEVICE) (1-YEAR SUBSCRIPTION) [DIGITAL]
MODEL:WEB803800V500
MAYBE IT WORKS for CHROME ANTI-VIRUS
I was not sure what to expect from WEBROOT – SECURITY FOR CHROMEBOOK, but I did expect a little more. I assume it is working, but there is no console or any reporting to let me know it is working. If you click on the app, then the scan now, it says in effect, I’m already running, but if it would make you feel better go ahead and press SCAN NOW. I spent a lot of time trying to find anything that would let me know what is going on. As near as I can tell it is mostly just offering “safe surfing” either through the apps own browser window or via a chrome extension. Eventually, I noticed the “support” button which promises to let you manage your devices from a central web portal. After setting up multi factor authentication and going to the management console, there are no options for managing Chrome devices, only for managing PC. So even the WEBROOT management console has no settings for the WEBROOT – SECURITY FOR CHROMEBOOK ANTIVIRUS. I can see my licenses and that is all.
So, I have to assume it working, but there really is no way to tell.
SETUP:
I clicked on the link provided with the license. It took me to the Google Play Store, where it downloaded the app. My first “red flag” was a giant warning message “This app is designed for mobile devices and might not display correctly”. So, it seems that not only does the management console not know about the Chromebook version, neither does the installation app on the Google Play Store.
SUMMARY / RECOMMENDATIONS
I guess safe surfing is better than nothing. I assume it is running and if I happen across malware or a virus, then I assume it will do something. In my humble opinion, this is an incomplete product that is not yet fully integrated into the rest of webroot’s product suite. At a minimum it needs some way to give the user confidence that it is doing its job.

Not much to write about in regards to Webroot Secure Anywhere mobile device protection. I installed it on my Chromebook, the process was easy, from the Google Play store, asks if you have an activation key. The installation asks you to grant permissions to your photos and videos. Also asks if you want to install the the Secureweb browser app which I didn’t because it wasn’t compatible with my Chromebook. The set up did an initial scan prompted to fix items found (it did not find anything). My entire Chromebook (or at least the areas deemed likely for threats) were scanned, which took about 75 seconds. Not much to the interface or items to configure (which seems the norm for Android protection products) a pretty simple product which seems to work and to protect my Chromebook.

The Webroot security download app for Chromebook Antivirus protection is rated in the intial stage and introduction is rated as good and comprehensive.

Easy peasy and you’re protected! I bought it on sale when I bought my chromebook and it was available immediately

Webroot Antivirus is a solid option for anyone that’s looking for extra security while using their Chromebook. While many may argue that’s it’s an unnecessary additional security step based on how Chrome OS operates in a sandbox, in my opinion, it’s likely never a bad idea to have AV protection online.
Setup was simple. Download the app from the Google Play store (assuming your Chrome device supports it), enter the code, and you’re off. They include a specialized, secure browser as an option for those who wish to use that. I personally opted to use their Chrome extension for testing instead. There’s not much else to report. On my Pixel Slate (i7 model with 16gb of RAM), I noticed no discernable slow downs while using Webroot AV. Overall, it’s tough to tell how truly effective it is, but it performs well and seemingly keeps you actively protected. Seems like a great option for anyone wishing to add an additional layer of protection to their Chrome OS device.

The Webroot Security for Chromebook is perfect for my Lenovo Chromebook. It does exactly what it says it does. Easy to download and install in minutes. Also included is a Webroot chrome extension. This antivirus program runs in the background like a charm!
jimylegg1 –
Trying a new and affordable anti-virus security software for the Chrome book which I use daily. This program loaded pretty quickly with low space needed and scans really fast! It runs in the background or you can ask for manual scan. Has a feature to isolate and address certain bugs found and alerts you when issues are found. So farcical seems like a great protection system for the price for chromebook. Definitely need anti-virus security these days and this one is quite user friendly and effective so far in my use.

At first I had problems trying to find instructions for downloading because I think they had just started offering Chromebook protection. When I looked for assistance, I was still seeing articles saying Chromebooks don’t need/use antiviruses. After getting around that, it’s been fine. And I like the extension.
