Intimidating at first but once you get to know the microwave, it will be your BFF in the kitchen. Size of an oven but functions like a microwave

  2. Marc

I purchased a MB30WP to replace an eight year old Thermador built-in microwave that failed. It’s a very nice looking unit, but upon installing it, I found a few really annoying aspects of the UX design. First, and most annoying, is the array of sounds that YOU CANNOT TURN OFF. Every time you press “ON” to use it, it belts out a start-up sound straight out of The Jetsons. Even the lowest volume setting will be heard rooms away. That is one of many unnecessary sounds for actions that did not really require sounds. Second, the pretty clock display times out after a while and the display goes dark. To see what time it is, you have to press “ON,” and then Voila! the start-up sound startles everyone nearby. Last, the simplest everyday commands require too many button presses, yet there are modes like “Soften Cream Cheese,” or “Melt Chocolate.” Thermador needs to hire better UX designers. I can’t believe that I waited 2-1/2 months for this thing…

  3. Tonka

Microwave is outstanding! Works great and looks amazing. On the downside, it took five months to arrive.

  4. Thermador

I 100% concur with the reviewer who described the microwave as annoying. There are way too many many buttons to press for the simplest task – 5 buttons need to be pressed to start a 30 second heating – my cheapo previous microwave had 1. Next the clock display disappears after using and can not be left on. In order to use it, one needs to press the power button, not once, but twice. First, you hear this ultra loud mysterious ethereal sound that cannot be turned off, then you have to hit power again to get a menu, then you need to select microwave, the you need to add the 30 seconds, then you need to turn it on again! Crazy. We are extremely disappointed. Yes it looks nice – but that’s where it ends – looks. Don’t buy this unless you want to be annoyed. Oh, and Thermador couldn’t care less what you think.

  5. Jessika1014

Looking forward to receiving our new thermador microwave. Purchased it to match the rest of our new appliances

  6. sgbest

Good, simple microwave that does the job. The control panel makes the process more complex than it should be though. It takes too many button presses to start heating.

  7. Ladylaw

Super unhappy with our pro series microwave oven/oven combination unit. I found another review elsewhere by someone with the same complaints and spent a long time on the phone with a friendly customer service rep at Thermador. Our conclusion is that the digital interface is one big software design mess. We called our salesman for help. He will be checking to see what it will cost to replace the microwave oven with the speed oven. This is a $2400 fix out of our pocket. I will be test driving the speed oven control features before investing more money. After recently dropping over $30k into a full suite of Thermador appliances for our kitchen remodel, we are devastated. One final note: the unit is underpowered. BUYER BEWARE! Look at my picture. Is it on? Is it off? What time is it? I have no answers.

  8. gettingmyearplugs

We bought an entire custom kitchen of Thermador products for our newly built home.
This MC30WP microwave was recommended by the builder/designer and appliance rep — none of whom must actually have one at home…because how can you NOT be fixated on the VOLUME and quantity of beeps that come from this monster?!! House is huge…but never fear – you can hear the bings/beeps/music everywhere!!! We have lowest setting on, but it will still wake people up at night if you use it!
Thermador — PLEASE help!! We are losing our minds with this!!

  9. Elmer

Under powered microwave with annoying tones that we have not been able to remove.

  10. Mynewmicro

This is an amazing microwave. Easy to use. It is well built and looks like it was made to last a lifetime.

  11. Woodinville

The startup and done sounds are obnoxiously loud at the lowest setting and can’t be muted. Interface is total junk with a crude UI and too many button presses to do the simplest things. Really disappointed and likely will have to return it. It looks great so we thought it would work great, and probably does, but so annoying that it would likely rarely get used if we kept it. Shame on Thermador, this could have been easily corrected and could have been a great product otherwise. Would be great if there was some kind of firmware update to fix this mess.

  12. ag100

For the money, this is the biggest disappointment in a new appliance. Thermador estimated 3-3.5 months, it took 9. I get it, there are all kinds of issues going on in the world, so we found a replacement to use in the mean-time and moved on. Fast forward, the oven came in, and as others have mentioned, the interface isn’t great, and worse, the noises coming out of this thing are RIDICULOUSLY LOUD. Even with the volume on the lowest setting, you can hear it throughout the house. Oh, and it loves to make these noises for everything. Haven’t used it in a while and have to wake it up? There’s a LOUD sound for that (and mandatory “Thermador” logo that you have to wait for. Want to start after waking it up? There’s a sound for that too. And there is no way to disable them (aside from likely breaking it). Bottom line for us, is that if you wake up and want to use the microwave at 3am, don’t.

It’s hard to imagine what an engineer is thinking when building these things, but it’s not what we expected out of a top brand commanding top dollar. Now the larger oven it comes with? The interface looks similar, but the low volume on that is quiet, and doesn’t seem nearly as painful to use, at least so far.

If you really want a Thermador, I would absolutely make sure you familiarize yourself with it before sinking money into it. I know I wish I had.

  13. Joe1561

The absolute worst microwave I’ve ever dealt with. The oven is fine but the microwave is literally so awful, I am trying to remove it and find a way to either replace w/ different brand or just another wall oven. It is GARBAGE, not user friendly, difficult to use, awful interface just to start it, it defaults to turn all the way off then must be turned on just to use it, the way time is entered is AWFUL!

  14. Outofpatience

I moved into a renovated condo where this microwave had already been installed and there’s not a day when I haven’t been miserable using it. As others have written, I beg you to update the firmware to try to correct some of these issues. I had a nice technician come to the house and apologize that he couldn’t fix it.

The user interface is awful, with the need for many, many extra clicks and wait times to do the simplest things. But the worst thing are the tones when you turn it on and especially when cooking is done. It has an unearthly chime that is VERY loud. Last night I counted and it repeats the chime 13 times, going for two straight minutes! The only way to stop it is to open the door. It often startled others in the house when it goes off, and there’s no way to silence it. I don’t know what your designers could have been thinking. Did anyone try it?

I’m currently looking into tearing it out, if that can be arranged. I wish I had my old GE microwave, where you can cook most things with the tap of one button and silence all the tones.

Please don’t say you’re happy for this feedback unless you have something more substantive to tell us.

  15. Wontbuythermadore

This is terrible due to its loud chime that can’t be turned off. Really hope someone get fired for the sloppy job and testing. Plz update the software to make this go away. do not buy!!!

  16. Losingmymind

I rarely write reviews of any kind, but I couldn’t let this one go. I totally agree with every other bad review. We built a new home and Thermador appliances were part of the very expensive package. The microwave was not on display in the showroom (now I think I know why), but I figured at this price point and including the fact that I’ve never had a microwave I had a problem with, it would be great, or at least ok. Boy was I wrong! I’d take my old GE microwave back in a second if I could. Like others said, It is SO loud it even wakes up people sleeping upstairs on the far side of the house. My husband often gets called into work in the middle of the night, but won’t use the microwave for coffee or a snack for fear of waking up the whole house. You have to be reminded every time you turn on the microwave that it’s a Thermador because you have to put up with the very slow icon with a bizzare sound before pressing 5 other things to heat up water for 30 seconds!! Then when it’s done heating, it rings out every 2 seconds until you open the door-it is SO annoying!!!! The accompanying oven has a very pleasant sound so I thought my microwave speaker was broken or something so I had Thermador send someone out to “repair” it. The repairman apologized for it and said they’ve had tons of complaints but that’s just the way it is. Like others have said, I cannot believe any engineers though this was a good product. And they definitely must not have used it! So my inquiry to Thermador is this-you keep responding to let you know if we have any questions and that you will share the comments with your product team. My question is this–can you please provide customers with this microwave a software update to eliminate these issues and make this microwave work as well as every other microwave out there that is a fraction of the price? If you can, I will write another review and let prospective customers know it is as convenient as it is attractive. But please don’t just save this advice for future products. Some of us won’t be able to spend money on another microwave for years or even more than a decade. That’s a long time to forgo midnight snacks or breakfast before the kids get up. Not to mention, I may lose my sanity from all the beeps throughout the day by then…

The microwave “speed” oven that comes with the PODMC301W Thermador double wall oven is ridiculous. For one thing, it takes too many steps to microwave something and the ready signal sound effect is grating and absurd.

Say you want to warm your coffee by microwaving 20 seconds. First turn on the microwave knob (and hear zzinnng! sound effect and wait 2 or 3 seconds while a LED displays “Thermador” (as if you need a brand reminder every time you want to use the microwave), next press “time”, then swipe the seconds display to 20, then press the check symbol button (to confirm your selection), then press “start” (and hear zzzinnng! again). When 20 seconds are up, the zzzinng sound repeats every 10 seconds until you retrieve the item from the microwave. Anyway, that is five steps necessary just to warm up your coffee. My old microwave did it in three steps for exact timing (or even one step if you press 1 for “One Touch” cooking) and was a lot less annoying.

This ridiculous technology is what happens when software engineers are dickering around and not being supervised by a responsible adult. Thermador needs to program an update to this unit that simplifies the microwave instruction process, and either get rid of the annoying signal or enable owners to deactivate the signal.

Two stars because the unit looks nice and the convection oven capabilities work well.

  18. Jakerx

One MAJOR flaw (that I’ve fixed) and one unavoidable minor flaw. This is an excellent microwave for what it is…a 120 volt microwave. If you want a more powerful microwave or baking capabilities, you’ll need 240 volt wiring. I love the way it looks and it matches all my other Thermador appliances. Now, the major flaw that I referenced is the same flaw others have mentioned in their review: it makes a god-awful, LOUD sound on power up as well as when it starts/finishes cooking. To fix the issue I spent about thirty minutes removing the control panel and covering the speaker completely in several layers of black electrical tape. Only tools needed are a P2 Philips screwdriver and some electrical tape. I’ve deducted one star for both me needing to do this and also for the unnecessary complexity of the cooking steps.

  19. Trashytoaater

Love the look, love the rotisserie feature of the oven, also, the multi- function of microwave/oven/ convection. Yes the learning curve takes time but face it you bought a multi- function dual oven/ microwave/ convection ovens.

  20. SharR

Not worth it. Please buy another brand microwave other than Thermador.
To heat anything you need to power on, select time or keep adding 30s. Finally press start/stop.
This is all ok but the worst thing is it makes this loud sound as soon as you turn it on, press button or when it is done it keeps making this loud sound till someone opens the door and picks food up. It’s very annoying to say the least. There is no way you can turn it off. Its really really loud!.
Would not recommend. Buy some other brand. These guys don’t know how to make microwaves
Cannot submit review without any stars.. so give it a 1. Very generous!

  21. DonS

We love our new microwave! We read the reviews prior to purchasing and some people indicated that the sound of the microwave was loud… it is not!

  22. ANormalHomeOwner

The microwave itself is fine but the UI and noise is a masterclass is poor design. Every other microwave has a quickly accessible “+30 seconds” type feature/button that is arguably the most used feature on any other device. This unit takes forever to get there, requires multiple button presses, and makes an absurd amount of noise along the way. Also incredibly loud when complete no matter how much you turn down the volume. It’s great that it matches all my other Thermador appliances look and feel but the microwave as a functional appliance in my new kitchen is *total garbage.*

Also, this is is almost certainly just a software problem since none of my other Thermador appliance in the same series (that I love) operate this way. Thermador could fix this with an update if they wanted to. I’d even pay money to have a tech come out and update it if it made the thing usable.

  23. BrendaD

The microwave has a sleek modern look Thermador is a great brand BUT…. Every time you use the microwave when it finishes cooking it just CONTINUES TO BEEP until you open the microwave, It will not stop . Which means when ever that you want to use your microwave be prepared to stand next to it until it’s finished because the loud beeping WILL NOT STOP on its own. I contacted Thermador because I thought I was missing something but turns out I’m not missing anything this is how this was the designed. HUGE FLAW wish I knows before I purchased .

  24. Regegis

This microwave is a horror. We rent a very nice vacation home where the owners have this microwave. You can’t heat anything in it without waking up the entire house. You need an advanced degree to heat up hot water because the interface is so clunky and complex. Everyone who joins us on vacation hates it and it is always a topic of spiteful discussion. Thermador in general seems to think people want to hear nonstop annoying sounds out of their appliances. The dishwasher they make that is in the same home is also a sound making horror. It literally will beep all night if you wash dishes before going to bed. I will never put this brand in my home. They are clueless on what makes a high end kitchen enjoyable.

  25. Nivek

Perfect for commercial lunch area at work and home.

  26. VirginiaResident

What does it take to reheat your food for 30 seconds? FIVE CLICKS (Wakeup -> On/Off -> Microwave -> Add 30 seconds -> Start/Stop) and listening to THREE loud, long & annonying sounds, followed by endless beeps! Thermador user interface designers climbed the height of incompetence and their don’t care customer service reached new lows. Read through the reviews below left over two plus years to understand the customer pain and how Thermador is making it endless by ignoring.

We took Thermador microwave as part of the whole built-in appliance bundle without trying it out. What a mistake! This pretty piece of junk is driving our family nuts.

Do yourself a favor, go to the store and try the microwave for your typical usage. It is not a small decision. Looks of bulit-in appliances need to match. Cabinet cutout hole sizes are different. I failed to read these reviews, and focused only on Thermador cooktop (good), refrigerator and the looks of oven stack. The family is suffering now and we all hate the microwave. The first one was dead on arrival and it took 5 weeks to get it replaced. Now we know what kind of annoyance it is, we need to get something useful such as a Monogram. Looks will not match and we will have to pay the cabinet guys to redo the appliances cabinet for a different hole size, but it is necessary cost to have sanity. I can’t return the rest of the Thermadors either as the return window closed due to late arrival of microwave.

I am very very very disappointed at Thermador for creating and continuing such a horrible interface to an otherwise beautiful looking microwave. This is unbelievable for a high-end appliance maker. A quick firmware update can alleviate the usability issues but Thermador doesn’t do it. We are asking the visitors of our new 100k+ kitchen to stay away from Thermador.

  27. RogerS

Thermador, do your software (or sales?) folks not use microwave ovens. The user interface is terrible as noted by many reviewers. Reinitialize (delay, load noise) – select microwave (doh) (or “beverage”) – select time (or beverage size) – enter – start.

    How about instead:
    1) open door takes one to previous setting (unless you hit power off to cancel)
    2) start (then edit settings while running)

This would effectively provide instant access to commonly used functions, any thing you like. You can turn off the display and reactivate it when door is opened.

This simple change will be a game changer,

Or if you want to sell a “professional model”. Have a single knob that you twist one way to increase time (with auto start) and twist the other to decrease teh time. Push to stop/pause/restart.

  28. KyleF

We purchased an entire professional series Thermador kitchen, so naturally, we completed the suite with this microwave. Big mistake.

This microwave has a user interface that is needlessly complicated. The fact that you have to turn it on with every use is annoying given its 5min auto-off “feature” which you can’t adjust. It has an obnoxiously loud startup chime (even with the volume at the lowest setting). Then, once you get to the main menu, everything is slide-to-navigate, including minutes/seconds to select, which takes a significant amount of time compared to microwaves with number buttons.

It takes no less than 25 seconds to microwave something for 25 seconds, making your entire experience 50 seconds long.

It’s so bad that it made us question our entire kitchen purchase. Luckily, Bosch and Thermador are built the same, so we bought a Bosch 500 series microwave and swapped the door out so it would look consistent with the other appliances.

Thermador seriously needs to consider changing the downright insulting UI on this microwave before they drive away more customers than I’m sure they already have.

  29. SKSC

takes forever to start.. at least three steps needed to just get it started. Loud sound chime sound that cannot be turned off. Worst usability.
