I hate waking up to my alarm on my iPhone. I have to use the loud, angry ones to get me up and moving, which I attribute to having 2 kids and suffering from a lack of proper sleep over the past decade.
I’ve used the Philips band to help try and reduce my snoring, so when I saw they created a light that would simulate waking up to a natural sunrise, I was all over it.
Let me just say – I love the light. It’s got everything you need. My main gripe is with the app that you have to download to configure it. I hate installing one-off apps on my phone that don’t serve more than a single device.
The app first off requested a whole host of permissions around personal data and while I appreciate it being upfront, some of it seemed a little creepy. When I declined some of the permissions, I noticed that many of the connected features on the light wouldn’t work.
You need to use the app to create an alarm scheme, which thankfully you can do without signing over access to all of your data. I used the natural sunrise setting and made sure it would wake me up at 5 am. The light starts warming up around 4:30 – 4:45 am and I love that I wake up right around 5 am not feeling bleary-eyed.
You can also use the touch screen controls on the light to control it and use it like a regular light. I also experienced issues with the app even connecting to the light, even though they were both on the same WiFi network. The lamp said it was connected and so did my phone, but it would regularly say it couldn’t find my lamp.
Once the app manages to connect, you can also control the FM radio option and also listen to live broadcast radio if you want. The app can also track your sleeping pattern if you open up the option and let the device track your data. If you’re concered about privacy, you can still use the base functionality of alarm, lighting control and radio with the app.
If you need a light to help wake yourself up, then this might be what you’re looking for.

Such a unique device that has made a positive impact in my well being and sleep.
Using this in conjunction with the app and your home WiFi allows the device to assist you in getting to sleep and waking up gently. I love that I can use the gentle sounds of ambient noise and a fading light to doze off to sleep, much like the sound machine I used in my young child’s room. This helps to relax and ease me to sleep. The unit measures noise level, light level, and temperature in the room and informs you in the app about the things you should adjust to get a better sleep per evening. Waking up with this machine is a multi purpose tool. I love that it’s a clock and gentle waking light to give me the nudge I need to wake up without a loud beeping alarm on pitch black mornings. Makes me feel more rested and less stressed when I use the light therapy to wake in the mornings. I like that I can wake to the radio and also light if I want to.
Overall, it’s been helpful for me to track my sleep with my iPhone and this wake up light. I have only a few hours a night to recover for a new day so I want to ensure I’m making the most of my sleep time to rest and be prepared for a new challenging day.
PRO:
Unique contemporary look
Helpful sleep aid

This is a great idea. Purchased as a gift, hope it will be more gentle than a screaming alarm!

For some time now I have had difficulty sleeping so decided to try this SmartSleep Therapy Lamp by Philips. I honestly feel it is overpriced for the features it has and the application is pretty basic. The sound is average along with the clock and alarm features. However I was impressed by the light and method it wakes you up. I recommend trying the “RelaxBrethe” function on the application. Overall it is a nice aid when trying to sleep however no way justifies the price.

Bought another Philips model a couple years ago & I love it. Like the design of this one & the app functions.

My wife uses an external noise maker. I wish you could keep the noise it provides on longer than just “the sunset” period.
Shay718 –
It gently easies you to help begin the wake up process

This has really been worth the money. I notice I wake up much easier in the mornings!

My daughter was working odd shifts for an ER while also attending college full-time. This fantastic wake-up light was SO PERFECT, as she could gently and quietly wake up for early morning shifts (i.e., 3am) without waking up housemates.

After many years of hemming and hawing on such a device I finally decided to take the giant leap and drop $200 on this one. Scary as that that was, I am thankful I did. I have now been using this light for 3 weeks. All but 2 days I woke up by the light. Those 2 days that I did not my back up alarm woke me. The days I was awoken by the light I also woke about 5 minutes earlier than the alarm time. Never once did I feel like going back to bed when awoken by the light. I will say I don’t use the sounds the device has due to the speaker being of poor quality. I also don’t use the relaxation breathing mode – it’s just to clunky and again the sound is shoddy. A feature I use most nights is the sunset mode. I love the color choices, but the sounds I don’t use as the only sounds to choose are water sounds or Fm radio and they sound so horrible on the cheap speaker. The light transition is smooth in both sunrise and sunset mode. The sun color choices are also appealing. I am glad there is an app to use with the light because the light interface is a bit cumbersome, and I think that without the app I would not enjoy the light as much because the app allows for quick easy adjustments to the settings.

Really does help me sleep at night and wakes me up without startling me. It’s expensive, but it is worth it.
Matthew –
So far it’s been easy to control, and the various wake-up modes we’ve tried have worked well.
great –
helping solve sleep issues – good purchase – would recommend it to others
Flower –
Bought this light for my daughter. She likes it a lot. It helps her to wake up early in the morning easier
Dubsp0t –
Great alarm clock. Gentle light comes on when it’s time to wake up.
Jhgdd –
strangely enough this light makes it easy to relax and wind down at the end of the day and get into a good sleep habit. it has multiple “sunsets” so you have options to choose what works best for you. the morning alarm is a nice change from loud noise, the gradual light makes it much easier to wake up and get out of bed
drnomolos –
had a previous Philips wake up light which was great but hard to program. this model has a connected interface so it can be programmed via mobile app, makes a huge difference. assures gentle wake up cycle and soothing night time sounds to get to sleep
ACantu –
Wake up to a bird chirping sunrise! Great features, excellent quality. Highly recommended.
Yana –
Good quality product & easy to use. Keeps me punctual!
Carlos –
Get the one that’s not the smart one. My girlfriend hasn’t even set up the app and just uses the regular functions and she seems content with that, but she bought the full one and hasn’t fully utilized it.
Diretcor1 –
Bought for my son, did not work for him.
Doesn’t make it a bad product, definitely worth a try.
CMS10 –
Useful if your room is pitch black. Otherwise it is an expensive nightlight.
Pepster –
The original therapy lights where glass. I recommend that you but this model that has the connected app. Gives valuable information for your sleep. The wind down sunset is awesome.this was such a great piece I purchased there for gifts.
FilthyFrank –
I was tired of hearing the phone equivalent of a tornado siren every time my alarm went off. Or a nuclear warning horn. Or that kanye track I set 7 years ago and never changed. I wanted something less invasive and more natural.
I have never once woken up late with the SmartSleep light. Not once. Plus, I never feel jolted into consciousness, which was my exact goal. Consciousness tends to be painful; escort me there carefully, Philips.
Note: I am a light sleeper. Your mileage may vary. Also, when paired with the smartphone app, you can measure lux (brightness), sound, and humidity of a room. All of those values affect your sleep.
Reid –
I wake up to the sound of the birds and it’s a lot less stressful sounding than my previous alarm. And the room is lit when I wake up
Bill –
It have been working so well! Best alarm clock ever! Instead the usual jarring alarm every morning, this is subtle enough to ease you into the morning. I still set my iPhone as a backup (5 to 10 mins later), but I think I only needed it once. This would be a 5 star review if it wasn’t for the fact that you can’t replace the bulb if it ever goes out in a year or two. Then you’ll have a make a whole new $200 purchase again, and there’s no telling if Philips will still make it, if it’ll be available, or how much it’ll cost after all this inflation.
Snow547 –
This was a gift. To my knowledge they are very happy with it. This is what they asked for.
TroyM –
Use as a bedside charger, clock, sun up and sundown feature.
Dissapointedcustomer1 –
Horrible. I expected an amazing product. Full of glitches and disappointment. Not a helpful alarm at all. Brightness barely made a difference in my room. The WIFI connectivity kept glitching. The return policy sucks – 14/15 days. Now I’m stuck with this very expensive mistake.
TheQAexpert –
Returned the first one because it doesnt connect with app. About to return the replacement for the same issue. Philips tech support was no help. I followed the instructions exactly, made sure it was 2.5G wifi not 5G, as it stated. Did the whole Philips wifi setup and still nothing. Lamp said connected when it wasn’t. I give up. Never got to try it because it never set up. Many reviews on Amazon had same issue.
AVES –
Super cool and unique item. Great tech. Best Buy is awesome.

The unit is not bad I just wish that it would connect with Alexa or Siri and even Google to make it so much easier to activate the sleep application. The device itself is great I just wish it had more options. Philip is a massive company you would think they would give you a lot more options with the app to use with the lights maybe their next version will be more of a connected version. I feel like this is definitely not a real connected version.

Excellent service. Very helpful. I love this equipment. I happy to have. Good price.
Dvbhcfbbjv –
Love the app. Love the ambient room sensor. Love the light. Love the alarm features. The radio reception is great. Three year warranty? Love that, too.
MattChris –
I’ve used it for a month or two now. I love it, I’m able to wake up to waves and fall asleep to rain. Overall very pleased with it. Get the version with the app, it makes the whole product way more accessible and enjoyable.

I bought this, the hatch, the amazon halo and by far this is the nicest one and best app, halo may get some updates in the future but so far this is the best and worth the money, it is big
TekFall –
Alarm clock works well and has ample options to wind down at night and wake up gently in the morning. Would recommend.
JulieT –
This has been a game changer for sleeping. I love the sunset feature for night and how I can wake up with a sunrise in the morning and lovely birdsong. The info about the temp, loudness, and brightness in the room is also interesting to know.
jac83 –
Kind of gimmicky to start, but purchased on sale. Materials feel extremely cheap. Wouldn’t sync with the app because of mesh wifi. That sentiment backed up by the fact that it stopped working within a week or two.
Alarm –
Great alarm! It has adjustable brightness and very easy to set up.
Kaylee –
I truly love this lamp! I had the older version and I really like the new updates in this one like the wifi connection and the app. I think that the new sounds are super good for someone who needs variety (like me!). I also enjoy the night meditation feature as well, I think it is worth the purchase!!
Nitro –
The best features are the sunset and the wake up features. The sunset with sounds (waves, rain, etc) is a great way to transition into relxation for the night.
ChristianG –
Great for my room with no windows, only thing I don’t like is that only has a few sounds for alarm ,would’ve nice to have some little capacity to load alarm ringtones but oh well
Crankyh –
We love the SmartSleep Lamp. Beautiful design wakes us both up…in a calm, natural way. I wish there were an update to the sounds…but otherwise great.
Patrick –
Waking up to light is so much nicer especially as seasons change and it’s dark out every morning.
KM0706 –
Actually makes the difference with waking up in fall/winter mornings. I didn’t think it would work as well as it does.
I looked at other, cheaper brands, but I am glad I went with this one.
Kimberley –
Seems to work the best of the wake up light lamps. However, if anything else worked as well, any of the other options are visually more appealing. It’s kind of an eye sore. It’s also very expensive.
SebasUCF –
Excellent for what you think its for. Just dont…
JesseO –
It has been such a joy to wake up to! Super easy to use and set up

My wife loves this clock. It was the perfect present. She has a sound sensitivity and this has been such a nice way to wake up (for both of us). I still keep the clock radio on my side of the bed but the Phillips-SmartSleep Connected Sleep & Wake-Up Light Therapy has been really nice. So far, so great!
