I must have at least 7-8 iPads over the years. I currently have 2 iPad Pros (2020/2021) and just purchased the 12.9 iPad Pro 2023 version (M2). I am not a designer but use the iPad Pro every day totaling at least 3-4 hours daily for emails, web browsing, reading, travel, etc.
I figured, if the 11″ works, why not go BIGGER? Well, I just discovered that the 12.9″ iPad Pro is totally overkill for most users who don’t actually use the pen feature or draw/design with it. In fact, I’m not sure who actually uses the pen feature daily but I’m sure they exist.
Coupled with the Magic Keyboard, it’s my iOS go-to for ease-of-use if I’m sitting at my desk or on a stable/flat surface. However, the size difference between the 11 and 12.9 is something to behold. In the past, I held the older iPad Pro with 1 hand in bed or reclining on my office couch (when taking a break). The 12.9″ is HUGE and it becomes tiring after a while. It is really heavy when coupled with the Magic Keyboard to nearly unusable on your lap.
I thought Stage Manager would help me with multitasking ala my Windows computers and 2-in-1 Surface Book. Nope. Stage Manager is still a “work in progress” and it’s not worth the learning curve and tweaking. I tried it for a week and turned it off completely.
Plus – I’m getting a bit older and I’ve increased the size of the icons and text without feeling that I’ve lost space. It seems to be more energy efficient. Not as warm as the 11″ version. It’s bright! I can use it with the Magic Keyboard as a shield and weapon.
Con – Weight and the virtual keyboard is too spaced out for ease of use. The Magic Keyboard weighs more than the iPad Pro itself. Stage Manager is gimmicky and not worth it.
Is the iPad Pro necessary? If you don’t actively use the pen (which I own but rarely use) and you don’t really need the brighter screen (which is too bright at night of all things), stick with the 11″ iPad Pro. Your wrists and hands will thank you.

I’ve used Mac since they first started so I’m comfortable with that world. iPads are a different world and it is taking some getting used to. I am surprised by the weight of the unit. Also need to get a screen protector to deal with finger grease. Other than that it is a bit like the iPhone without the phone. You need patience getting used to it.

I have been using the M2 iPad Pro 12.9 as my daily work computer and the experience has been amazing. Reasons, have been cellular connectivity, Size, and power.
Before deciding on the 12.9 Pro, I had used items like the surface tablet, Chromebooks, PC’s, and even Mac’s. As nothing is wrong with any of these products they just did not offer the experience I was looking for in a work device. My work relies more on cloud storage, so I needed a device that offered internet connection no matter where I am. I also needed the internet connection to be secure and consistent. The iPad in my opinion was meant to be a cellular device. Owning the cellular model is just way more convenient and safer when using out in public.
The 12.9 Pro over the 11 pro, I wanted a device that was going to be replace my laptop. I first tried the 11 inch, which when plugged into an external display was great but I wanted the size that I had been use to when using a laptop, thus the 12.9. The 12.9 at first seemed a little over kill for my needs, but the more I used the tablet and figured out the best ways to hold the device when in tablet mode I just found myself loving it. The 12.9 offers the best display I could find on a device of this size and being able to finance the device through my carrier meant that I could afford the other peripherals like a keyboard case, mouse, and Apple Pencil.
Lastly, Power, this iPad Pro 12.9 M2 has not lost a step in anything that I have thrown at it. I have had to come up with a couple work around when printing documents from third parties but outside of that I can access anything and everything I need to for work through apps and web browser.
When I sit in Starbucks completing my work and I see others using clunky/chunky laptops I can’t imagine ever going back to that setup and weight it brings to your work bag. If you are looking for the true laptop replacement, I highly recommend the 12.9 iPad Pro.

This was just what I was hoping for. Portable, easy to use, clarity of graphics is amazing. The promodel screen is large and makes completing work tasks easy, and also is great when traveling for watching movies inflight. Plenty of storage so you can download before your trip. However, the cellular option is really great. I connedted to my cellular Verizon plan with no issues, and monthly shared dara plan runs around $10 dollars a month with my existing plan. Howger this can be different from carrier to carrier and your current plan.
