  1. RebeccaJ

It has been 30 years since I wired a receiver, and receivers have certainly changed! Yeah I am old! I wired 3 Klipsch speakers, and a subwoofer, plus a Sony TV an an Apple TV streaming box. Once a plugged everything in, I followed the set up instructions. Voila! worked the first time. Sound and picture is great. Highly recommend

  2. Nolan

Great sound, works well with TV for upgrading picture and soundtrack. Easy setup, works great with my universal remote

  3. akafoxxman

This box is definitely an upgrade from my 8 yr old Sony receiver. The sound is much richer and with the addition of Dolby Atmos. My theatre room has come alive again

  4. Wauketa

Easy to use and just a good all around receiver. You can pay more and get better but for the price this is really nice.

  5. TimW

Love the new Onkyo TX 7.2. Hooked TV, turntable, and CD through it and boosted FM antenna . Many choices for playback of multiple inputs and two sets of speakers in different rooms —- all that makes it a bit more complicated to operate, but once familiar, GREAT!

  6. WHampton

Lots of features and excellent sound, more features than I have used, and great configurations. The phono pre amp isn’t the best, but most wouldn’t use it for that, if you listen to vinyl you probably have a separate setup anyways.

  7. BerdjA

This is my second Onkyo receiver. The other one lasted more than 12 years.

  8. Pennywise

This is by far the best receiver I have ever had. It has so many options, and the one I use the most is the WI-FI streaming to my outdoor speakers. Now, I know I have a chance to win $400 with this review, but I never win anything, and I’m guessing there actually is not any reward at all. I will follow-up this review with whether or not I won or if I received any notification at all.

  9. ConSt

I HAVE NO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THIS RECEIVER. WORKS GREAT WITH MY DOLBY ATMOS KLIPSCH SPEAKERS.

  10. DZinOK

Not real pleased with the service options available. I bought this at the end of March. It is now 3 months later and the eARC has gone out. That’s the Audio Return Channel from my TV, This is super important to anyone using an Antenna for local TV stations.
After chasing my tail looking for help (Best Buy doesn’t handle repairs or anything on this item), I learned I have to take or ship it at least 120 miles to get it repaired.

While it worked, I loved it! I even bought a SONOS portable to use with it so I could listen to the local news in other rooms of the house. With eARC out, that can’t even do that./

  11. Jason

Cleaan and crisp sound. Great selection of options.

  12. BrettS

Disappointed, it says it has zone 2 capability but it really doesn’t. I returned it after I bought outside atrium speakers.

  13. LUAP0614

I was up in the air with Denon or Onkyo.
I am glad with the Onkyo purchase. Sounds great.

    Great AVR!!

  14. OscarB

Satisfied with the receiver. User friendly and easy functionality.

  15. AdamT

Horrible sound for music and it went in to protection mode the second day i had it and was clicking and wouldnt turn back on

  16. Drew

I got this on sale. Best reciever for me so far. Good for listening music and watching movies. Music seems to me like your watching live concert. Movies becomes youre in a theatre watching youre favorite movies.

  17. SharliseB

Just as described…I am extremely satisfied and amazed!

  18. DanielB

it does everything i want it to do plus some! Lots of tech i’m still being amazed with…

  19. olemil

I bought this to replace my old tried and true receiver I use in the garage. Mainly I was looking for a receiver that supported blue tooth. I tried a yamaha receiver first but the tone was very flat so I traded it in for this. The Onkyo is a beast, it has many features and very nice sound. It was fairly easy to set up and only gripe is you really need a tv or pc monitor connected to it to be able to view all the settings. I love the various music modes, it makes the Bose 251 speakers come alive. I do have a small con, the mic to calibrate the speaker settings isn’t working properly. The first time I did a sound calibration, it reported the exact speaker distances. The second time I tried it, it showed the right speaker at the proper distance, but the left it only shows it’s 1.2 feet from the mic which is incorrect. Not sure if I have a faulty mic or what, guess I’ll have to contact Onkyo and see what they say. One major gripe is it only has one main speaker output. There only a few companies that offer A&B speaker outputs and they are very expensive. Overall, this is a great receiver for the money and luckily, I did get it on sale.

  20. misterwill312

I had to get a 4k receiver to go with my 4k TV and I have to say, especially when using the PS5’s 3D audio, it sounds incredible. My last 3 receivers have all been Onkyo and I only got new ones to handle newer technology I found myself wanting/needing. They have all been fantastic but this one is the best so far!

  21. TVtvtvtv

Not difficult setting up and everything seems to be functioning correctly. Still positioning speakers for optimum play.

  22. SometimesIbuyDMBSHT

I have to reset it almost daily bc my sub or surround sound speakers will stop playing sound. Its like you bill yourself a top 5channel but damnn near seems to only work when 2 speakers are connected

  23. AlbertO

Very nice receiver it gets the job done… great price as well…

  24. MartinK

The. receiver. delivers. clean. sound. on. all. levels. It is easy to use.

  25. GinaC

The receiver is amazing works very good also the app you download controls volume and music control

  26. AttilaS

Excellent sound quality, easy to connect stereo and video equipment

  27. Bigdog

i like it because it is smaller than my previous receiver. the set up was very easy (I’m not a techie). Works well with my surround sound system and TV.

  28. CoreyP

Can’t beat the sound that this reciever has for the dollars.

  29. MarkE

This was a replacement for a 13 year old product. I was impressed with the improved sound of the receiver over the previous mode.

  30. AndreC

Receiver is as advertised. I’m a satisfied customer.

  31. splic

Have only had this a few days but thus far it is performing well. Great price on this receiver which meets my needs.

  32. JoshuaK

All connections work well. This is a versatile receiver. Sonos, hard wired speakers, subwoofer, and turntable.

  33. jcpahman77

I really wanted to give this 5 stars, and keep it, but ultimately I had to return it. I wanted to leave a review though to help others. I’ve owned Onkyo in the past and really like the brand and quality I’ve seen from them and at first blush this receiver seemed like no exception. One of my front speakers is slightly quieter than the other and while this is no fault of the receiver this model doesn’t offer independent volume levels for the front left and right channels; they can only be adjusted together. I was willing to overlook this as the fault was with my speaker and not the receiver until I was watching a Monday night football game and noticed the rear channels were much quieter than they should have been. I went in to the menu to turn them up only to find there is no option for rear channel volume. For many people these things may not matter but in a receiver priced at $649.99 they shouldn’t be optional features, I expect them to be standard on even a base model.

  34. TTOPP

Excellent sound! This system allows you to connect to so many other devices!

  35. EllenM

I love the features that come with this unit. However, it took some time and internet searches/videos to figure out how to initially set up the stereo.

The unit must be directly connected to a TV via HDMI (in addition to any connection you might have with satellite, cable, or streaming device.)

Once connected, the TV and stereo need to be turned on and the TV becomes a “monitor” and is used to walk through all the set up steps.

The sound output for movies, sports, and music is great.

  36. PaulL

Excellent AV Receiver, plenty of power. Would highly recommend

  37. Notdave

Terrible. No way advertised watts is correct. Powers off when switching between inputs. Does not have a 4 speaker setup. Seeing as there was no operational display models of any audio equipment, I’ll no longer shop at Best buy.

  38. KAJ77

Ordered reciever Thanksgiving weekend online from Best Buy. Geek Squad certified excellent condition reciever. Upon delivery, opened box to find calibration mic missing, no big deal. Set up reciever and plugged in. Didn’t power on at all. Some much for being checked by Geek squad before being made available for purchase. Returned. Now no reciever.

  39. Toner2008

Love this receiver to useat home in my home theater it so great!

  40. BrianA

great sounding system. Installer was professional, quick and got it all set up the way it should be. will definitely be buying here for the next upgrade.

I bought this AVR back in October 2022 at our local BB store. I had just gotten a steal on a full set of Klipsh surround sound speakers & subs and wanted to start playing around with them immediately. The BB associate recommended this unit. No other Onkyo units were available to purchase same-day. So without any research, I bought the Onkyo TX-NR696. I have not had any issues over the past 14 months with this unit and have been pleased with its performance so far. However, if I’d done some actual research, then I wouldn’t be writing this review.

In the past, we had always used soundbar surround sound systems. After purchasing this unit & pairing it with the aforementioned Klipsh speakers, I’ll never go back to another soundbar system again. The sound is incredible and takes your home movie watching experience to a new level. It took a while to get all of my components dialed in, but the results have been worth it. This unit has been rock-solid and has not let me down. Oh, Dolby Atmos is really cool too…lol.

Know that there is a large learning curve with dedicated A/V receivers – that is if you’re like me & you’ve never owned or configured one previously. Instructions for configuration of this unit are available on Onyko’s website. I’ve always liked learning how things work and adhering to best practices. If this is you too, there will be a lot of time exploring & learning ahead for you.

If you intend to use this AVR as the media hub for your external devices to your TV, you may want to do a little more research. You’ll need to decide on how future proof you’d like your purchase to be. This AVR supports HDMI 2.0 connections and is backwards compatible. This means the TX-NR696 with correct is capable of displaying video up to 4k/60fps, but can also run devices that are older – like HDMI 1.4, etc. (One of the other reviewers stated they were having issues connecting to their Visio TV using HDMI 2.1 that it would work until they downgraded to HDMI 1.4 connectivity. Well, this receiver does not support HDMI 2.1, only version 2.0 and older) Also note that out of the box, video output maxes out to 4k/30fps. Onyko has documentation available on their website that explains how to enable full 4k/60fps by following a few steps. I thought making the enduser research & turn this feature on manually, instead of it just being enabled by default, was a little odd and annoying.

Anyway, AppleTVs work fine with this unit as their max video output is 4k/60fps. I have an old Xbox One X for playing 4k discs & it works as expected as well, still limited to 4k/60fps. PC/laptops have worked fine for me as well.

I have switched between having my external video devices (AppleTVs, etc.) connected directly to the AVR through to my TV and have also tried connecting external devices directly to my TV and using the eARC feature to pass sound from those devices through the TV and on to the AVR. I have stuck with using the AVR as sound only via eARC and connecting video devices straight to my TV. My TV supports HDMI 2.1, and I want to be able to use full 4k/120fps, if/when I need to do so.

Realistically, this is AVR is at least one generation too far behind for my taste since it doesn’t support HDMI 2.1. The sound is still amazing for the price range, but having this unit as the main video hub is not for me. If I could do this all over again, I would probably look at the TX-NR6100 or spend a little more and get the TX-NR7100. (From my post-purchase research, the TX-NR6100 seems to have the exact same audo features/specs as TX-NR696.) Both of the TX-NR-x100 units support HDMI 2.1, aka 4k/120fps.

To wrap up, the TX-NR696 has been very reliable for us, plus the sound has been better than I expected. However, if my receiver were to disappear from our entertainment center and needed replacement, I’d most likely consider the TX-NR6100 or, if my budget allowed, the TX-NR7100.

  42. CarlosA

I just got this Denon receiver and sounds amazing at a great price.

  43. SimonP

solid receiver with many options, I have not had any problems

  44. ScottD

This was for me a leap into thr future for my pld system. The features work very well with my existing equipment even though its older. Complaints about the remote may be true for some but i installed the app on my phone and that works terrific, I still like the remote for setup though.

  45. RandyM

Some reason this tuner does not communicate with LG TVs and they were unable to make it work correctly

  46. LNMom

Great sound system for our home theater! Love Onkyo brand!!!

  47. PhilipS

This replaced a 20 year old Kenwood Surround Sound receiver that we still enjoyed. Amazing how much technology has improved. Excellent sound quality with all the existing Polk speakers.

  48. ClayCar

I wasn’t in the market but my almost new Denon would not talk to my 6 disc CD player with only RCA outputs. Not only does the new Onkyo receiver work it has a Zone 2 feature that works with intuitive controls. The Denon also had Zone 2 but I was never able to get it to work when I needed it to work. This new Onkyo is user friendly like no Denon that I have ever owned. Musical quality difference is undecernable IMHO. Likewise features and benefits of both match up perfectly. The Onkyo is simply more functional do to user friendliness.

  49. ZoelyF

Truly good. durable equipment and I do not regret making this investment. highly recommended.

  50. Onny23

Great system . I like the easiness and simple system. Great value for the price.
