Here is what comes in the box:
The PMD device, the cord, 6 different discs to choose from, and 2 caps to fit the coordinating disc. AND an 8-minute instructional video, which I would be completely lost without.
Here’s how it works :p lug it in and choose a disc. The discs are different sizes and grits: the large ones are for larger areas of skin and the smaller ones are for hard-to-get areas, like around the nose. They recommend starting with the blue moderate grit and working up to the green course grit if you need it.
The discs are coated with aluminum oxide crystals which will help remove the stratum corneum. What in the heck is the stratum corneum, you ask?
It is the top layer of skin: the flaky dead skin cells that prevent lotions from penetrating deep into the skin and can make your skin look thick and dry. The PMD’s job is to remove the stratum corneum to make your skin look soft and supple:
Place the cap over the disc and start moving it like a vacuum across your skin. It exfoliates and then sucks the dead, white, flaky skin cells away. Then, you just remove the disc, wash the filter where all of your tiny, flaky, dead skin goes, and that’s it.
My skin felt super soft & smooth, tingly, fresh, and a tad pink. It’s something I plan to keep up! My spa insiders tell me microdermabrasion treatments cost $80-$150 a pop, so this would be a great investment if you have it done regularly.
A few things to note:
*DON’T hover over one spot for more than a second or two, because then it will give you baby love bites (hickies?), and it won’t be pretty.
*your skin will be extra sensitive to sun for the first couple of days; be sure to wear sunscreen.
* they tell you to buy the lotions and toners, but I’m perfectly happy with my good old facial moisturizers.
*they recommend no more than once a week in the beginning, and then you can eventually taper off to once a month.

My sister-in-law is a pretty amazing esthetician. When you have an esthetician in the family who gets to look at your face across the dinner table every week, you get all sorts of discounted facial treatments. Not to mention your eyebrows always look amazing. Eyebrow waxing may or may not have been a family activity. But when you move 1000 miles away, 1016 miles to be exact, you have to start taking care of your own skin. The washing and moisturizing is easy enough, I can even get my sister-in-law to send me great products to take care of that portion of my skin care ritual, but I am on my own for the rest of it. This week, as part of my participation in BlogHer and Best Buy’s Inspiration to Fitness, Best Buy sent me a tool to help with the task of taking care of my skin. They sent me the PMD Home Microderm Abrasion Device.
It may look intimidating at first, but it comes with a short video that walks you through how to put it together, use it, and clean it. They even show you how to test your skin to find out your skin type and make sure you are using the correct disk. It is all really easy, and in a matter of minutes you have basically buffed away all of the dead skin cells on your face.
It’s handy in the winter time when your skin tends to dry out, and it is going to come in very handy in the summer time when I spend a little too much time outside in the sun and my skin, even after repeatedly applying sunscreen, starts to look a little weathered. With repeated weekly use it can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and age spots.
Dr. Oz even had this handy dandy device on his show as an inexpensive alternative to Botox. And it isn’t just for your face. The microdermabrasion device features caps for your body too, so you can use it on your arms, hands, and even your elbows. I need to use it on my elbows!

First off, I will admit something. When it comes to beauty products or procedures, I know nothing. Nada. Zilch. The closest I come to buying anything in the beauty category is Burt’s Bees chap stick and store brand moisturizer.
So the PMD Home Microderm Abrasion Device, out of all the items I have been sent to review, made me the most anxious and nervous to use.
Set up is easy: plug it in. I read the booklet and watched the DVD, and I was still nervous to use it. Honestly, it was probably just my inexperience with beauty products that was getting to me, but because of that I started on a less conspicuous area (as suggested by the DVD) and used it on the back of my hand first. It took me a little bit of time to get the hang of it on that surface; it’s a little awkward to maneuver at first. You have to find a balance between pressure, movement, speed and angle. With a little practice (on my hand), I was able to get the hang of it and cautiously moved onto other areas.
The result?
Noticeably smoother skin, very little redness, and no irritation. You can actually SEE the dead skin cells being removed and taken off of the surface of your skin. I can see where long term use of this would get you the same kind of results you may get from a professional.
I DO think part of the reason I didn’t have much redness was because I was extra careful and really took my time to figure out the machine. All of the directions emphasize only going over an area once and give very specific directions for use. I think with anything face or skin related, it is very important to read and follow all directions to the T.
If microdermabrasion is something you are looking into, this is well worth the investment. You can be assured that if even I, a COMPLETE beauty novice, can do this properly and achieve desired results, you can too!

This little tool removes the top layer of skin on your face and body to reveal your healthier looking skin underneath. You know the feeling, when your face just kinda feels grimy and a little bumpy in spots and has problem areas that just seem rough. This PMD Home Microderm Abrasion Device helps out with that. It comes with finer and more coarse heads, depending on your skin type and even bigger sized heads are included so that you can use this device on your neck and body. Pretty cool.
I get kind of annoyed with facial scrubs and feel like I have to rub and rub to get that icky top layer of grime off my face. Plus I never feel like they do an even job, and sometimes they even hurt. So I was pretty excited when this arrived in the mail to test out.
I plugged it in (using the head with the finer grit for my sensitive face) and started gliding it across the skin on my face. What happens is that the PMD has slight vacuum action at the tip that suctions the skin right to it; that helps bring blood flow to the surface which also promotes the penetration of moisturizing creams. And while the tip has suctioned your skin (only slightly) up into the tip, the exfoliating disc gently removes the old dead, rough skin. As you move it across a section of skin, the suction and exfoliating continues.
I used the Home Microderm Abrasion Device on my entire face and was surprised how easy it was. I read a few warnings (and watched the 10 minute video) about making sure to not hover over the same spot for too long, as it may cause scabbing. I didn’t have a problem with that at all. I just kept the device moving. I could see a little line of red on my skin right after the area was treated, but that disappeared after a few seconds. Also, the tool is a bit noisy so you may wonder if it’s going to gnaw your face off but don’t be scared; it’s actually pretty gentle. Well, tough, but gentle.
After I finished treating my entire face, there was a visible white substance on my face. Yep, dead skin. So I washed my face again and then applied a moisturizer. (They recommend their own line of toners and moisturizers, but I just used my regular ‘ol face moisturizer.)
I’m not kidding when I tell you I noticed right away that my face was quite a bit softer and smoother. But it would have to be after all that old skin was washed down the drain. Loved that.
I was especially curious if it would help the look and feel of my jaw line, especially right by my ears and neck. I tend to still get blemishes and bumpier skin in that area. It actually really evened things out, even though I doubted that it would. I’m not sure that there is a visible difference yet, but I have only used it twice, a week apart.
I’m hoping that if I continue to use it once a week, I can keep my skin healthy, clean and fresh, and help keep that dirty teenager acne away. Ugggh.
My overall feeling about the PMD Home Microderm Abrasion Device: Not Bad. I like to think if I keep the healthier skin exposed and rejuvenated, I won’t have as many issues with dirt and grime being trapped under the dirty top layer of skin. It makes sense in my brain anyway.
I will definitely keep using this little guy. And hopefully he will keep improving my face until it shines like baby skin.

It was sometime a few years ago when I looked in a super-magnifying mirror for the first time in a long time. And I didn’t like what I saw.
Where did those wrinkles come from? What were all those dark, splotchy places on my face? Why was I an idiot who spent my high school summers teaching swim lessons and neglected to wear sunscreen because I wanted a nice, tan face?
The sun damage piper had come calling, and it was time to pay. Or time to find some products with a sufficient amount of retinol. It was also time to buy a large sunhat, SPF 150, and sunglasses that covered my entire face.
Anyway, ever since those days I have been slightly obsessed with discovering the magic elixir of skin youth. I’m a sucker for anything that promises a glowing complexion and the ability to turn back the hands of time. Even though, let’s be honest, even Cher couldn’t figure out how to do that. I’ve tried the organic oil cleansing method. I’ve tried retinol. I’ve tried every brand you can imagine. I’ve tried petroleum jelly.
I’ve finally come to love the combination of facial cleanser with electric face brush and some retinol. It’s removed a lot of the dark places on my skin and helps it have more of a glow. But I was so excited when Best Buy sent me the PMD- Home Microderm Abrasion Device. This microdermabrasion device features body and facial caps for wide-ranging use, suction that promotes blood flow to help renewal, and recovery creams (not included) that penetrate your skin. I’ve always wanted to try microdermabrasion but didn’t know if it would be worth the money, and so I couldn’t wait to try this. Unfortunately I had to wait a few days because you can’t use it within 48 hours of using retinol or alpha-hydroxy on your face. I use a lot of both of those things.
I tried it last week and loved it. My face felt so smooth and soft, and it easily absorbed the face cream I put on afterwards. I’m not sure what improvements I will see over time, but it looks promising based on my first use. I’ll let you know.

I’m 31 years old but I feel like I have the face of a 50 year old (because of wrinkles) and a 13 year old (because of acne). My skin has always driven me crazy and I’m always on the lookout for ways to improve its appearance, whether it is to get rid of pimples or decrease the look of wrinkles around my eyes. I was excited to try the PMD to see if it could offer any help.
I watched the 10 minute instructional video and it was very informative, explaining the process very well. Everything you need is in the kit and once you decide where on your body you would like to use the device, you pick the appropriate exfoliating disc, plug it in, and you are good to go!
I tested it out on my hand first to get the feel of the device and then started on my face. It’s definitely a different sensation than I am used to. I made sure not to hover on one place for too long for fear that I would get red spots on my face. I used the device all over my face, spending more time on my chin (where I break out) and in areas where I have begun to wrinkle. When I was done, I washed the little bits of dead skin off my face (sounds grosser than it is), then used my personal toner and moisturizer. My face really felt great after. I noticed immediately how soft it was and later on that night, my husband also remarked that it felt soft.
I’ve used it three times so far (a week apart) and am happy with the results. I’m looking forward to using it a lot more and to try it on other parts of my body, as well!

I am very impressed with the PMD personal microderm classic device. It is a very easy to use tool. You need to refer the videos on the PMD website for proper usage. The various discs provided do a wonderful job based on the level of dermabrassion needed for an individual’s need. Also, based on the area where you use the tool, you can select the disc so that you get desired treatment depending on the sensitivity on that area.

Complimentary from PMD. I’m really blown away by how smooth my skin is after even one use. I have purchased microdermabrasion at a medi spa before, and really didn’t think an at home device could replicate the results, as they rarely do. It seems just as pricey as the spa treatment, but you get so many uses out of it! My skin is soft and glowing and not irritated at all. I am definitely repurchasing new tips to keep this at home glow going.

At first it took me some time to move the device without skipping a part of my skin but it gets easier, Holding the face is key! I’m still using the sensitive disc because my skin is sensitive it does turn red as I am exfoliating but I do not experience any irritations. Hello smoother and brighter skin! Started with the white disc for sensitive skin and it has been going great. My skin was slightly pink immediately after use but no irritation, hives or bruising. After treatment, I like to rinse my skin with cool water for the extra soothing effect then slap on a calming toner and sheet mask. Highly recommend practicing on the arms first, watch videos and don’t focus on one area for too long. Avoid using this device if actively breaking out at least until pimples are dried down a little otherwise it will get messy and spread the bacteria.

I cannot say enough about how much I love this. From the first time I used it I was floored by the results. I work in skincare and have been lucky to try some amazing skincare products and devices, but can honestly say the results I get from using this are unmatched. It makes my skin smoother than anything I’ve tried in the past and leaves my skin absolutely glowing once products are applied. Before I used it I was a bit nervous about the suction function as I get red and bruise easily, but was pleasantly surprised that I experience neither with this. I also have pretty sensitive skin, which is always a concern, however this (thankfully!) does not cause any issues for me. I find it to be really easy to use too and I can’t wait to see the longtime results.

I was impressed on how easy this device was to use!
There are 2 attachment caps, one with a smaller opening for the face, and a larger one for your hand &/or foot area. How it functions is very easy, there are different disc inserts that you have in the respective cap that sits right below the cap opening. This rotates and oscillates inside and the cap “vacuums” the skin to be physically moved near the discs to have a very gentle micro-exfoliation.
You also have to get into the habit of not sweeping the device over the same areas twice.
I honestly recommend this if you have slightly texture in your skin, as it will be easier to manage and maintain your skin.
I would also watch their tutorial videos on how to operate the device if you’re not familiar with using high-tech tools.

I use it two times a week. It has an excellent suction. And I am loving the results so far. I have seen visible results after using this. My skin feels so much better, smoother and clean.
